Effektivisering av produkionsflödet för stora cylinderrör på Företaget AB

This study was conducted in autumn 2008 on the Company AB, which is currently in a growth phase. The company manufactures hydraulic systems for the heavy vehicle industry and has annual sales of approximately 250 MSEK with 165 employees. The rapid growth and unchanged planning is the starting point for this report. It all began in 2005 when the company received an unusually large order. During this period, the first priority was to satisfy customers and all other focus was disregarded. This has primarily resulted in a messy production and long throughput times. The main reason for the long throughput times are the difficulties arising with the manufacture of cylinder tubes. The company has realized that streamlining of the production flow for cylinder tubes has to be done. Therefore, the aim of this study, based on a stationary machinery conditions is to suggest a more efficient production flow for large cylinder tubes and thereby achieve savings in time and cost.In order to illustrate and solve the problem a case study method has been used. The company's information system and interviews with responsible people at the Company AB has been a great help in collecting data. To get a detailed understanding of the situation in the production tools such as material flow analysis and process flow analysis was used. The result of the present situation shows that the company AB has problems with long throughput times for large cylinder tubes. The basic reason is the insufficient capacity available in the manual machines. The insufficient capacity leads to delays, creates a need for storage place and transportation between most of the operations as the manufacture of large cylinder tubes requires. Since the machines are scattered throughout the company and manufacturing is being cross-wised the large cylinder tubes are handled and transported back and forth, which creates disorder. After that the problems of the present situation had been found, began work on streamlining the production flow and resulted in a proposal on a production line was developed. In chapter analysis and discussion a comparison with focus on cost and time has been done between the current situation and the proposed production line where the result was decisive in the decision-making at a higher level. The analysis and discussion chapter also mentions possible consequences and improvements. One conclusion is that it is possible to achieve efficient production flow in terms of time and cost with the suggested production line, however, management's commitment and holistic approach is necessary to achieve a sustainable system.
