The interactive whiteboard (IWB) is to be found in many classrooms in Sweden, and its number is growing rapidly. There is a lack of research of the use of the IWB in Sweden. The Swedish National Agency for Education refers to English research where the investment in the IWB in school is huge. In this study I will investigate how the IWB can be used as a mediating tool in the learning process. My study examines how interaction pattern appears when the teacher teaches with the IWB as a tool. I will also examine what kind of material the teacher uses to teach with, and why he chooses that specific material.The theoretical perspective is socio-cultural.  As methods, observation and interview are used. The result is based on six observation studies with two classes in year 7 and 9 and involves one teacher. In my results I have found that the IWB can be used in several of ways to enhance teaching and to help the teacher to explain contents with pictures and moving images. I have seen methods used as scaffolding and encouraged development and manifestation of knowledge in students ZPD.
