This bachelor thesis addresses the problem of appeals against house building in Gothenburg. The thesis investigates whether there is a statistically significant relationship between demographic factors and the occurrence of approved, appealed and revoked permits for new construction of residential buildings in the ten districts of Gothenburg. This is done with a correlation analysis. The report also investigates whether there is a statistically significant regression in the same demographic factors and how these individually affect the average processing time for appeals in the districts. This study is done with a multiple regression analysis. The results of these studies show that the only significant relationship that exists is the negative correlation between population density and the occurrence of building permits issued. There is no significant regression of demographic factors and differences in processing time seems to depend on the handling of cases of authorities and courts rather than on the variation in these factors. A business point of view is obtained through interviews with employees at a number of construction companies of different sizes. It turns out that the issue of appeals against building permits for the construction of residential buildings mainly affects small construction companies and not large ones noticeable. In order to give an indication of the economic effect that appeals may give for small construction companies some simple example calculations is done in a separate paragraph in the end of the report.
