Many organizations utilize decision support systems in order to handle different tasks and tosupport the decision-making process. Decision support system is a broad term used to referto several different types of systems. These types of systems can handle a wide range ofoperations within the organization. Consequently this will have an impact on differentoperations within the organization. The main aim of this study was to create a betterunderstanding regarding the impact of decision support systems on the various operationswithin the City Council's procurement units which in turn will increase effectiveness. The studyhas focused on these three areas: 1) decision support system impact on 2) monitoring andplanning processes which can lead to 3) effective decision-making. The following researchquestion has been used to reach the above purpose:What are the effects of using decision support systems within organizations during planningand monitoring processes?The empirical study on five of Sweden's procurement units for pharmaceutical contracts hasbeen carried out through a qualitative approach. The following are conclusions of my study:The use of decision support system for planning and monitoring processes generate thefollowing effects: reduced costs, increased time efficiency, more efficient ways to movetowards the organization goals and higher control for medication use. In this sense, decisionsupport systems provide aggregated information that is related to the decision maker'sintended use, hence making the decision-making process more qualitative and with enhancedefficiency. The study also discusses the impact of an integrated decision support systemsolution that is better adapted to the users within the planning and monitoring processes forpharmaceutical contracts.
