"Läroboken - min trogne vän" : En studie om hur lärare använder sig av läroboken i matematikundervisning

The Textbook is one of the instruments that teachers and students have available in their teaching. For many years has Textbook regarded as being too controlling and as a barrier to students development in mathematics. Textbooks primary mission is to promote learning. My study aims to provide an overview of how effective teachers use the Textbook in mathematics education as well as the pros and cons they see with their work. The work includes interviews with five active mathematics teachers.

The aim of this thesis is to examine how secondary teachers in the subject of history are using the Textbook in their teaching. Four questions are being dealt with in this thesis. What importance is being placed on the use of history Textbooks by the secondary teachers? What priorities do the secondary teachers have? How do they deal with student interests? And what is the importance of the secondary teachers? work experience? I have interviewed four secondary teachers with different work experience to complete this thesis. A Dictaphone has been used in all the interviews. Research has shown that Textbooks now have a central role in teaching and the lack of alternative materials and reduction of teaching hours has made it difficult to replace. The main conclusions of the thesis are that the history Textbook has a dual role depending on the teacher you ask, and that the history book is used differently by the teachers.

The purpose of this study has been to get a deeper insight into how students reason about the Textbook and teaching that goes beyond its content. This in order for the teacher to be able to consider and respond to these important attitudes already at the planning stages of such teaching situations. This approach will aid to help students overcome the distrust of things that are not in the Textbook. The study shows that students have an attitude of overconfidence to the Textbook's reliability. It is considered to be controlled in its content as well as being a reference on the extent of the knowledge content. The general approach to teaching that deviates from Textbook structure is that it is welcomed as an interesting feature. However, a questioning attitude soon appears about whether the element will be included in any requirements for knowledge or tests. The following important conclusions can be drawn after this study was carried out:Very clearly communicate the purpose of all education that deviate from the Textbook.Inform students about the Textbook's deficiencies and the need for supplementing.Accept and respond to students' focus in that grades are the main driving force for the acquisition of knowledge in high school..

Fett osynlig?

This exam paper has examined visual portrayals of overweight and fatness in two swedish upper secondary school Textbooks, one in physical education and one in social science. The Textbooks were analyzed in regard to numeral representation, interacting social categories such as gender and age, depiction in forms of activities and stereotypes and relation to context close to or far away from a swedish context. The analysis showed an underrepresentation of overweight and fat bodies in both Textbooks, but the represention of overweight bodies in the Textbook on physical education were nearly nil whereas in the Textbook on social science there where representations of both overweight and fat bodies. Combined the both Textbooks gave a representation of health and youth as not represented by overweight or fat bodies..

Bakom Fasaden

Although Textbooks are scientifically proven that they are important and central to the school curriculum one should think critically about the content in Textbooks - is it really compatible with the curriculum of following the Textbook tradition? As a teacher there are different ways to reflect on which Textbook to choose. It is important to compare several Textbooks with each other and be aware that a Textbook should follow the curriculum. A teacher examines many sections/topics in the Textbooks, but in this paper only one section will be reviewed among four different Textbooks. The section to be compared, in the paper, is the interwar period.

Matematikundervisningens varierade arbetssätt : En kvalitativ undersökning om tre grundskolelärares undervisningsmetoder inom matematik

There is a constant change in the world of school, new curricula and syllabi are made and the view of teaching and learning is changing. The desire to improve maths teaching in Swedish schools is strong, especially by laboratory work. How is it then that several teachers in our schools are still using the traditional way of teaching mathematics, which I consider to be relying a lot on the Textbook and work for an automated approach? The purpose of my study is to investigate how three different math teachers on an F-5 school in the southern Stockholm area, choose to work with mathematics and why they choose to work according to a special approach. In order to obtain the information I seek, I have chosen to use the qualitative method to get a better understanding of my results.

This essay discusses the problem of literary history in the Swedish school system. The aim of the essay is to discuss whether the Textbook, Den Levande litteraturen, in literary history for Swedish high school students measures up to the demands of the curriculum in terms of obtaining knowledge about international literature and the historical and cultural framework that surrounds it. The essay establishes a theoretical framework that is used to distinguish the discourse that permeates the Textbook and how it affects the means of sustaining the curriculum and the problems it may create. The Textbook is broken down chronologically and analyzed showing quotes that points towards national and orientalistic discourses which in turn are discussed put in relation to the curriculum and the effects that these discourses might have on education in Swedish and literary history. This is in turn problematized with the current theories regarding comparative literary history..

Maskulinitet i läromedel.

This study indicates that research about men and masculinity does not appear to have advanced as far as research about women and femininity. Similarly to attitudes concerning women and femininity, clear norms and attitudes regarding men and masculinity pervade society. Hence, there is a clear need for further research within this field to be carried out. This study, with the support of previous research, looks at gender norms which exist in educational material and the impact it might have on students. Against this backdrop, the author has focused the analysis on one Textbook as educational material at upper secondary level with particular emphasis on masculinity and its associated norms.

AbstractIn the paper, democracy's development and change are studied in Swedish Textbooks related to social science. The study?s starting point is that the picture of democracy provided to students has changed over time. The study aims to see how the view on democracy has altered in Swedish Textbooks in social science. In order to examine this, I have studied seven Textbooks, from 1945 to 2006, in social science.

This is a study in how astronomy has been taught and is being taught in Swedish schools from 1905 to this date with an emphasis on the latest 30 years. It concerns the regulations and methodical recommendations/curricula for Swedish junior high school/Swedish Comprehensive school for the years 1905, 1933, 1955, 1958, 1962, 1969, 1980 and 1994. The matter of integrating astronomy with other subjects and different methodical approaches is also considered. The problem with Textbooks written only for one subject when the teacher tries to integrate subjects is emphasised.Physics Textbook analysis shows that astronomy teaching has over the years developed, from being based on observations, to become more and more theoretical. It also shows that the amount of practical exercises has been fairly constant in physics Textbooks during the seventies end eighties but now in the nineties varies a lot from Textbook to Textbook. The amount of liberty the Textbook gives the pupil in finding knowledge and answers himself in the practical parts of astronomy was at its lowest during the seventies.

This joint study has researched the use of non-European history in a Swedish Textbook for the High School course History 1a1 as well as internet based material regarding the same issue. The aim of this study was to clarify the use of non-European history in regards to the Eurocentric theory. As for the Textbook analysis the purpose was to research what non-European history was mentioned in the material with regards to geographical location and the events that were mentioned, as well as to study how much non-European history was included in the material compared to European or Western history. The study of internet based material aimed to show what kind of teaching material could be found on internet based databases by and for teachers. The study aimed to show how well the material handled non-European history, as well as to what degree the material used European perspectives when dealing with non-European events and geographical areas. In our thesis we have created our own definition of the theory regarding eurocentrism. The method used was a combination of a quantitative and a qualitative discourse analysis of the texts. Our results showed that the Textbook was overwhelmingly Eurocentric, not only giving vastly more focus to the European parts of world history, but also using European perspectives and ideals to describe non-European events and areas. The internet based material, on the other hand, proved more diverse and less biased, but also more difficult to find and less plentiful. Our conclusion, then, is that teachers have to choose between the risk of letting their students develop a severely limited and heavily Eurocentric view of the world, and the additional workload required to find and organize non-Textbook material to broaden their students horizons. We hope our study will contribute to the discussion of the place of Eurocentrism in today?s global and multicultural society..
