The purpose with this study is to examine and analyze the eldercare staffs conceptions and perceptions about the construction of ethnicity and aging, in Swedish eldercare, to illustrate the process of Othering. The authors interviewed eight people who work in the eldercare by using a vignette. We have analyzed our result from the interviews through several theories and earlier research pertinent to the subject. The study has shown that eldercare staff through their conceptions and perceptions unconscious been conducive to make and recompose constructions of ethnicity and elder. The constructions of ethnicity and elder can be conductive to processes of Othering..

The aim of this thesis is to examine expressions of power and racism in news reporting about the district of Rinkeby, Sweden, in two major Swedish newspapers. News articles are examined using Norman Fairclough?s three-dimensional model for critical discourse analysis. The discourse theory has also been complemented with theories of media in relation to power, ideology and racism. The study has shown that news reporting about Rinkeby largely focused on stereotypical subjects such as violence, social problems and crime.

In this thesis the construction of identity within the EU is discussed. A thesis problem in three dimensions is used to explain the purpose of the construction, its realization and the consequences of such identity. These aspects show the complexity of the problems related to identity construction on a structural level.By using a post-modern and a social constructivist theoretical approach identity is presented as socially constructed by discourse. The theory of discourse makes it possible to analyze the development of an identity forming discourse within the EU and its status today.With an approach inspired by critical theory, we use discourse analysis as a methodological tool to illustrate the ideas that govern discourse, and in what way it is related to the social reality.The analysis states that the purpose of identity constructing is the striving for legitimacy. Without identification, the legitimacy is threatened.

The topic of homosexuality was until recently a taboo in Russian public discussion, but has during the last years become a hotly debated issue. Analyzing what I call the new homophobic narrative I isolate and examine two ways of ?Othering? homosexuals, constructing them as strangers, when sexual minorities are discussed in today´s Russia. Sexual deviants are portrayed as threats to the nation and are connected to the West and its influence. Using analytical tools from queer theory, security studies and postcolonial approaches I discuss different ways of configuring the relation between nation and sexuality, identities that are interwoven in the homophobic narrative.

This study examines imagined boundaries between Swedes and non-Swedes. Rather than using pre-determined definitions as a starting point, the attempt is to examine the discursive construction of difference. The purpose is not to study the portrayal of immigrants per se but to examine how the ?immigrant-ness? is constructed. The result shows the perception of ?immigrant-ness? is linked more to a person?s origin than to the act of immigration itself. The selected newspapers are Dagens Nyheter (DN) and Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) for the period of 15th November ? 21st November, 1999.

Hur ser framställningen av rumänska och bulgariska romer ut i svensk dags- och tabloidpress? Vad säger den mediala bildom en större politisk och samhällelig kontext? I denna studie presenteras en översikt och analys av artiklar publicerade under perioden januari 2010?november 2013. Artiklarna är hämtade från Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet, Expressen och Aftonbladet. Angreppssättet består av en metodtriangulerande ansats med en kombination av kvantitativ och kvalitativ innehållsanalys. I materialet framträder en förskjutning mot ett individualistiskt förhållningssätt, där fokus ligger på attityder hos läsarna snarare än strukturell problematisering.

Denna uppsats behandlar representationer av fadderskap i den kommersiella TV-kanalen TV4?s Faddergalan, ett välgörenhetsprogram som sändes mellan åren 1998-2009, i samarbete med biståndsorganisationen Plan Sverige. Uppsatsens syfte är att analysera hur fadderskapet konstrueras genom de representationer av fadder och fadderbarn som existerar i Faddergalan med en utgångspunkt i postkolonial teori. Studien har genomförts med hjälp av kvalitativ metod där diskurs och representation utgjort analysverktygen. Det empiriska materialet som ligger till grund för analysen omfattar samtliga program av Faddergalan som hittills sänts.

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the media discussions of the rape in Bjästa 2009 and to reveal how stereotypical illusions of ethnicity, religion and gender affect how media understands and defines violence. The rape in Bjästa occurred in a ?Swedish context? but has been defined as honor related in other arenas outside media. This discussion occurred because the whole village turned against the woman that was raped and supported the perpetrator? a phenomena that speaks against the idea of an equal society and a behavior that is usually understood as honor related and something that the ?others? do.
