When SKL (Swedish National Laboratory of Forensic Science) gets Images to analyse, the task often is to identify a person or an object. In that work it?s important to find features. Unfortunately Images from camera surveillances often contain a lot of noise, so details can be hard to discern.A simple method to improve an image from a sequence is to compute the mean of some of the Images. However, the part of interest in the image has to be in the same position in all Images.

The aim of this Master?s thesis is to examine in what way library users are depicted on Images at two academic libraries; the University College of Borås Library & Learning Resources (BLR) and the Gothenburg University Library (GUB). 62 Images, from websites and information brochures, are analyzed and the main questions are: How are users represented on Images? What activities are shown? What is the difference between BLR and GUB? How can the consequences of the representations be understood? Little is currently known in the LIS-field about how Images work as constructors of the social reality. The theoretical and methodological point of departure of the study is discourse analysis, new institutional theory and picture analysis.

A picture says more than thousand words - an analysis of GQ Magazine´s cover Images and ninth grade student´s views of them is an essay in media and communication studies covering 15 hp. This essay examines how men and women are depicted on the cover of GQ Magazine and how ninth grade students perceive these Images. Our research questions are: How is gender presented in cover Images? How do the students interpret these Images? What possible differencies or similarities are there? Our theoretical framework is based on gender theory. Methods used are a survey conducted at Tegs Central school and a semiotic analysis of the cover Images.

This papers specific ques-tionsare, 1) is analyzing and intepretation of Images, subjective ?, 2) needs the subjectivityto be handled to limit arbitrariness and distortion ?, 3) is it appropriate to use a filterof awarerness as an aid to handle the subjectivity ? The answear to the threequestions, is short and clear: ?Yes?.

I have studied values relating to Banksy´s graffiti Images through which context they are placed in and where they are located. I have selected two different Images of Banksy as an example on the basis of a transnational phenomenon, where the Images that circulate in the public arena by street art and other Images and imported into the galleries and consumption market. My conclusion is that the values of the Images are based on the context in which each room have its surroundings and that therefore the impression will increase. The public space context, signal availability and the white cube context indicates art, and the commercial context signals goods and items that can be bought.

Image indexing research today is either conducted on a visual attribute level or on a higher semantic level, forming a semantic gap between the two. There is much to gain if research progress from the two fields is combined. Image retrieval using access points in both visual and semantic significations could improve retrieval and bridge the gap. In social media today, Images are often the primary communication agent and the number of Images on the web is increasing in an uncontrolled way. New and efficient ways to index and retrieve the Images are needed.The purpose of this study is to examine if emotions could be a semantic access point for image retrieval and if folksonomy indexing is useful when searching for Images that represent emotions.

During this project a photographer and an illustrator have explored if a single image can communicate a bigger whole, in this case a movie. By analysing five motion pictures with visual communication theories, semiotics and colour symbolism as tools, ten Images was created. These Images do not only consist of symbols, but also communicate the overall feeling and colour scheme of the movie.These Images have been tested in interviews with six individuals, who, except for one, work with visual communication of some kind. They have studied the communication skills of the Images from their own experiences.The result of the interviews showed that all Images could not communicate a movie. One reason for this was that only a few of the test persons had seen two of the selected movies.

This essay explores to what extent the Swedish language version of Google Images meets the usability requirements of average everyday users. Previously published studies on user behaviour and users? interface and search option preferences define the usability requirements, which are matched against Google Images? actual interface and search options. The retrieval method of Google Images is also briefly discussed, and users? opinions about Google Images too, as they come across in the previously published user studies.The findings are that Google Images lack some of the things that users ask for, but it still seems to be the most used image search engine among average internet users and more appreciated than other search engines.

Is there an unwritten art canon in Swedish schools? This work is about the art displayed and used in Swedish schools. The study examines whether there is an art canon in Swedish schools, or not. Through my profession, as an art teacher at a secondary school, I have come to take an interest in this issue. When I use art Images in my own teaching it often strikes me that many of the pictures I use are the same as the ones my colleagues use.

The purpose of this master's thesis is to evaluate whether it is feasible to use the panchromatic band of Landsat 7 in order to improve the spatial resolution of colour Images. The Images are to be used as texture in visual databases for flight simulators and for this reason it is important that the fusion preserves natural colours.A number of methods for fusing panchromatic and multispectral Images are discussed. Four of them are implemented and evaluated. The result is that standard methods such as HSI substitution are not suitable for this purpose since they do not preserve natural colours. However, if only high frequencies of the panchromatic image are used the resolution can be improved without noticeable colour distortion..

The aim of this work is to gain understanding of how predictions and Images of future are created and maintained and how they are changed in society. An interdisciplinary approach to cultural and social aspects is used to examine how collective Images about future are created. The distinction between collective Images and private Images is problematised. The subject matter is extracted from a previous explorative examination about Do It Yourself and OpenSource culture which are concepts of collective learning. That work is described in the foreword.The question ?How is a collective image about the future created?? is central for this paper.The interdisciplinary approach is a cross reference synthesis of philosophies, educational studies, film studies, strategicstudies and future studies.

The aim of this study is to examine a number of Swedish working public librarians and compare them with some popular standard Images of librarians. In this project we have been working in line with these three questions: How do the librarians describe themselves and how can the descriptions be interpreted? What Images are the most common and repetitive, according to earlier research? What differences and similarities are there between the Images of the librarians and the working librarians? To answer the questions we have performed seven qualitative interviews with working librarians and collected relevant literature that presents various portrayals of librarians. To interpret the interviews we have used Pierre Bourdieus theories of social space, social fields, habitus and the cultural, academic, social and the economic capitals, as well as the connection between individual taste, class and social power. The conclusions of the collected material of earlier research and the interpreted material from the interviews have been compared and discussed.

The purpose of this master?s thesis is to examine how comics, here defined as a combination of text and Images, are handled by the libraries in regards to subject analysis, classification and indexing. A comparative approach has been used in this study. First, common practices, methods and theories concerning subject analysis developed for documents consisting of text or Images are presented. Then the current systems at two special libraries, specializing in comics and consequently dealing with both text and Images, are examined and related to the above mentioned practices, in order to discover differences and similarities.
