Få läkemedel har visat god effekt vid lindring av neuropatisk smärta och denna typ av smärtlindring är därför fortfarande en stor utmaning. Inom humanmedicinen har dock ett läkemedel innehållande Gabapentin uppvisat god effekt vid smärta av denna karaktär. Gabapentin finns ej godkänt till behandling av djur men används allt mer inom veterinärmedicinen. Läkemedlet skulle kunna innebära lindring vid annars svårbehandlade tillstånd. Det är därför av intresse att granska den veterinärmedicinska evidens som ligger till grund för behandling med Gabapentin vid tillstånd karaktäriserade av neuropatisk smärta.
