När ska dieselelektrisk framdrift av fartyg väljas?

Diesel electric propulsion is in many ways a good alternative to conventional shaft propulsion, both economically and environmentally. There are also many other good side effects which need to be considered, i.e. better manoeuvrability, more efficient use of space and less noise on board. However, there are applications where Diesel electric propulsion is not profitable. Large ocean going ships? profitability is much depending on fuel costs and the Diesel electric alternative cannot compete on long journeys with large low speed engines.This thesis will treat the aspects of choosing between a Diesel electric system and a classic mechanical propulsion system.

Alternativa drivmedel : Vilket alternativt drivmedel uppfyller bäst Försvarsmaktens behov?

This essay is written within my education for Technical Officer in the Swedish armed forces. The essay describes the alternative fuels that the Swedish armed forces can make use of if the supply of fossil fuels is insecure. The alternative fuels that are described and compared are; Synthetic Diesel, Organic Diesel, Methanol and Ethanol. The essay describes the process of producing the alternatives, the need for modification and the economics for each alternative. The alternatives are compared and assessed for their ability to secure the supply of fuel to the Swedish Armed Forces.

Kostnadseffektiv minskning av koldioxidutsläpp från tunga fordon i Sverige :

When the emissions from the Diesel trucks today accounts for a large part of the total emissions from the road traffic, the trend with a more extensive use of Diesel trucks for transportation will therefore lead to increasing carbondioxide emissions to the atmosphere. Because of the fact that technical progress in the form of optimized engines and shifts in the means of transport sometimes result in even greater emission levels, other solutions to this problem must be studied to decrease the emissions of carbondioxide from the Diesel trucks. The purpose of the thesis is to show how a decrease of the carbondioxide emissions from Diesel trucks in Sweden can be achieved in a costeffective way by the use of a carbondioxide tax and a differentiated vehicle tax. The method used in order to fullfill the purpose of the thesis is studies of literature, mainly of public government reports. Literature of enviromental economics will be used to show the need of a tax and how to determine the dynamic effective carbondioxide tax in steady-state.

ESC-analys och studering av knack på en "Diesel Dual Fuel"-motor

A one-cylinder research engine has been used for studies with a Diesel Dual Fuel concept (DDF). DDF is a concept that utilizes a pilot Diesel injection to ignite a homogenous natural gas/air mixture. Emissions and engine efficiency have been analyzed in an emission cycle called European Stationary Cycle (ESC) and the knock/pre-ignition problems with this type of engine have been investigated.At low and mid torque levels, an early Diesel injection around 60 crank angles degrees (CAD) before top dead center (TDC) was used. At these loads raw NOxemissions was below EURO 6 level (0.2 g/kWh). NOxwas at EURO 5 level over the complete ESC without after treatment and with SCR at high loads it should be possible to reach EURO 6.One issue with DDF is the high HC emission levels.

Liquid diesel biofuel production in Sweden : a study of producers using forestry- or agricultural sector feedstock

The transportation sector is the only sector of the Swedish society that is still increasing the emissions of carbon dioxide and other green house gases. Diesel fuel represents one of the fuels that contributes to these emissions and the use of Diesel fuels is increasing every year. The main purpose of this study was to make an estimation of the current business situation for producers of liquid Diesel biofuels in Sweden such as bioDiesel, synthetic Diesel and crude tall Diesel and examine the forces of competition of the industry today and its future prospects. The study revealed that the rivalry among the existing firms was low mainly due to the geographical spread of the companies. Moreover the success of the bioDiesel industry was influenced by a long-term guarantee of the tax exempt for biofuels and by the price level of petroleum Diesel.

Utveckling av en Multi-Zonsmodell för NOx Bildning i Diesel Motorer

This thesis work is the last part of the Master of Science education inmechanical engineering at KTH, Stockholm.The aim of this project was the development of a Multi-zone modelfor NOxformation in Diesel engines. Because of the stringent emissionlegislations, great effort is made to decrease the fuel consumption and theharmful emissions of internal combustion engines. Computer simulationsplay a decisive role in this context because they substitute the expensiveand time-consuming laboratory tests.The model is based on a multi-zone approach and uses the wellknownExtended Zeldovich Mechanism which gives a relation to calculatethe NO formation rate using the concentration of different gas speciesinvolved in the process.All the most important phenomena involved in the Diesel combustionhave been modelled. A special attention is then paid to the equilibriumconcentration calculation; this is a significant part of the model whichstrongly influences the following steps.A Simulink model has also been developed. This second version isbased on the previous model and it is made especially to allow theconnection with other external softwares, GT-power in this case.

Alternativa bränslen Vässarö : Vilka möjligheter har Vässarö rederi att byta till ett bränsle som har mindre påverkan på miljön?

Vässarös rederi bedriver idag transporter av gods och dessutom passagerartrafik, till och från Vässarö, med vanlig Diesel som bränsle. I detta arbete undersöks vilka alternativa bränslen som skulle kunna användas i Vässarös fartyg. Syftet med detta arbete är att undersöka hur Vässarös rederi kan byta till ett bränsle som har mindre påverkan på miljön. Information har sammanställts om flera bränsletyper och intervjuer har genomförts med motortillverkare, bränsleleverantörer och ett skärgårdsrederi som genomfört tester med syntetisk Diesel. Resultatet visar att ett tänkbart alternativt bränsle är syntetisk Diesel och det bränslet skulle ej kräva modifieringar av motor eller bränslesystem och ej heller nya förvaringsrutiner.

Fossilfria godstransporter : En undersökning av alternativ till diesel som drivmedel för lastbilar

Our modern society is in many ways built with and dependent on fossil fuels, which are used for energy production as well as for transporting humans and goods. Without the oil, many of the things we take for granted would not be possible. During the last century, the use of oil has increased steadily and will probably keep increasing as the world population and the economic well-being for many people increase. Since the oil is a finite resource, we will have to find other fuels that can replace it if we want to keep the same rate of development in the future as the availability of petrol fuels will decrease with rising prices as a result. Furthermore, fossil fuels have the disadvantage that they produce harmful emissions when combusted and thus affect the climate and air quality locally and globally.

Diesel Dubbelbränsle Teknologi

The work covered in this report includes a literature study of the Diesel dual fuel technology(hereinafter referred to as DDF). The literature study covers earlier work that has been doneregarding the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) and Diesel in a DDF system. Moreover a onecylinder research Diesel engine was fitted with a CNG fuel system for experimental testing. Theinstallation of the engine and the test cell is described. Results from the tests are presentedcovering emissions, heat release and pressure traces from the DDF-concept.During the literature study it was found that most research was related to heavy duty Dieselengines.

En kristisk studie av metoder för skattningar av CO2 från vägtrafik med diesel som drivmedel.

Det finns nu ingen tvekan om att det är vi människor, och vårt användande av fossila bränslen, som bidrar till den förstärkta växthuseffekten. Rättvisande metoder till att mäta växthusgasutsläpp är nödvändiga för att kunna fatta framtida beslut. Vägtrafiken är en av de största källorna till utsläpp av växthusgaser och den ökar hela tiden i omfattning. Den här studien fokuserar på olika metoder som används för att uppskatta koldioxidemissioner från vägtrafiken genom att först uppskatta mängderna Diesel, från ett kritiskt perspektiv. Som hjälp till detta har en alternativ metod, för att uppskatta Dieselkonsumtionen från vägtrafiken i Sverige, skapats.

Tankinsats för dieselbilar : Från idé till prototyp

This thesis describes the development of a tank insert for Diesel cars, from idea to a prototype. The idea is to design an insert which makes it impossible to refuel petrol in a Diesel car. The insert shall be installed in the existing tank opening on Diesel cars. The tank insert is designed for the Swedish company SverigeGrepen AB located in Vänge, just outside Uppsala. Their main product is a pitchfork that is ergonomically designed and durable.A pre-study were performed in which information relating to fuel caps, tank openings, petrol- and Diesel nozzles were collected.

Alternativ för värme- och kylaförsörjning i planerade kontorsbyggnader på Arlanda

This thesis consider alternatives for heating and cooling planned office buildings at Arlanda airport. The thesis is divided into three parts where the third part is a shorter synthesis of the two first. In the first part the energy demands of the buildings are modelled in a computer program. Two different building models are created, one more conventional and one with good energy properties. The results shows that with proper construction and ventilation systems etc.

Beräkning av värmeförluster och energieffektivisering av elbussar

The ?civilized? world is in need of fossil fuel in order to function. Hybricon AB is a company in Umeå that is developing a technology that hopefully can reduce parts of this need. They are currently testing their two electrical busses (with Hybrid backup) in city traffic on the roads of Umeå in cooperation with the county of Umeå.                               The busses are originally Diesel-busses, but the Diesel motor has been replaced with two electrical hub-motors with a power of 145 kW each that are powered by batteries.The batteries are charged at the end station after each route. In case the batteries should run low on capacity during driving, they can be recharged by the so called genset.
