A totally mixed ration (TMR) is a mixture of all the necessary feed components for the cow. She will eat the exact same feed in every bite which will make the rumen pH more stable and always supply her with a constant proportion between roughage and concentrate. This will make it possible for the cow to eat more dry matter (DM) a day because the fibre requirements are fulfilled. If a part of the concentrate is given separated from the mixture it is called partly mixed rations (PMR) and is almost always used when using an automatic milking system (AMS). When using TMR and PMR it is important to have a high hygiene, be accurate when mixing the feed and to look after cows in a good and strict way. The aim of this study was to document different farms with PMR in an AMS to see which routines they have and how they are managing their production.

Total mixed rations (TMR) and TMR complemented with individual grain feeding to dairy cows are a growing practice in Sweden. This is because the heard sizes of the farms are increasing. Some farmers and farm advisors in Sweden have great knowledge and practical experience of working with TMR. In the same time there are many advisors that do not know how to handle TMR and farms that have a group based feeding of their animals. In this MSc thesis, the knowledge of farmers that use TMR and advisors with lots of experience of TMR are gathered, with the aim to create a guide book for advisors that are about to start or just have started working with TMR.

Syftet med litteraturstudien var att sammanfatta den forskning och litteratur som finns om fullfoder i Sverige. Hur utformas ett bra fullfodersystem med hänsyn till näringsinnehåll, fodrets struktur och fiberinnehåll samt praktik i Sverige? I vilka besättningar lämpar sig ett fullfodersystem bäst? Definitionen på fullfoder är att alla fodermedel förutom vatten blandas samman innan utfodring. Det medför ett jämt flöde av fodermedlen till våmmen vilket stabiliserar dess miljö. Användningen av fullfoder blir allt vanligare i Sverige, framförallt eftersom systemet är enkelt att expandera och besättningsstorleken ökar.

I denna fältstudie har vi gjort en undersökning av hur foderfraktioner i foderstaten till mjölkkor förhåller sig till sju olika parametrar; mjölkavkastning, fett- och proteinhalt, sjukdomsfrekvens, hull, gödsel och sortering. I studien har vi besökt 15 gårdar. På dessa gårdar har vi separerat foder i olika fraktioner, hullbedömt kor, bedömt gödselkonsistens och intervjuat bönderna om deras produktion för att bilda oss en uppfattning om hur foderfraktionerna påverkar våra sju hypoteser.
