In this study my aim has been to discover what connections can be made between the way of creating a library building and the general values concerning the library activities and the library users. What kind of ideology could possibly be reflected in a library room? My study includes two different parts. First of all there is a theoretical section based upon literature relevant for the subject. Here I try to focus on the libraryÕs role in society as a public room.

Already in the late 1970ÂŽs it became clear that the traditional catalogs in libraries were not suited for children, neither their interests nor their way expressing themselves were accounted for. The goal of this thesis is to investigate if and how children?s OPACs (Open public access catalogs) interface design is at present adapted to the presumed audience of children. My method consists of literature studies and an investigation on the graphical interfaces in OPACs for children, according to the five criteria formulated by childrens library consultant Lena Lundgren and IT-consultant Kia Gumbel. The aims are to find out: a) what requirements for children?s OPAC interfaces and their usability are defined in literature and b) what the actual (real) features of the children?s OPAC interfaces are.

This master thesis in library- and information science is about the intermediary function of the library room from an environment-psychological point of view. Young people are a group in society who often reduce their visits to the library when growing up. There are lots of reasons for this maybe more attractive activities occur outside the library doors, making the young choose not to use the library. But if the library interior is attractive in itself, and has a welcoming atmosphere, there might be a change and the young people may well choose to pay the library a visit. What is important to young people how do they want their library room to look? Our purpose is to see how the physical environment affects young people in libraries.

Med stöd av teorier om barn och kommunikation, mediepÄverkan liksom synen pÄ barn som publik ville vi i denna uppsats ta reda pÄ hur barn i mellanstadiet i Halmstad lÀser filmen "Dylans historia?, en egenproducerad programserie om Halmstads historia.FrÄgestÀllningen var: Hur ser det narrativa mötet ut mellan producenternas intentioner, sÄ som de uttrycks i produktionens/filmens narrativa element, och barnen. Det vill sÀga, hur uppfattar barnen filmen? UtifrÄn Stuart Halls teorier om ?encoding - decoding? jÀmförde vi producenternas intentioner med texten (filmen) med den tolkning som publiken (barnen) gjorde. 19 barn i Äk 4 och Äk 6 intervjuades.

This paper aims to apply a specific architectural theory onto Lund City Library in order to achieve a better understanding of how the physical concept of the library is affecting our knowledge and our production of meaning; and furthermore how it suggests a certain form of usage. This paper discusses the ways in which architecture is affecting us when we use the library. The paper attempts to answer the following question: ? Which one of Koch?s spatial structures could apply to Lund City Library, and in which ways could this spatial structure be a producer of meaning? The specific architectonical theory used is developed by Daniel Koch in his paper Spatial Systems as Producers of Meaning: the Idea of Knowledge in Three Public Libraries. This theory is the method of the paper as well.

This Masters thesis in Library and Information Science has the title The New Information Desks at Malmö Public Library . During the rebuilding of the library in Malmö a new information desk was developed. This desk differs to a great extent from conventional information desks used in libraries. The information desk is triangular with rounded edges which allows the librarian and the user of the library to work side by side without any physical barriers. The aim of this thesis is to explore the requirements for the information desks formulated by the library and how they are perceived by the librarians and the users of the library.

Uppsatsens syfte Àr, att utvÀrdera bibliotekariernas integrering av webbresurser vid UmeÄ stadsbiblioteks informationsdisk. Jag har valt att anvÀnda mig av tvÄ kvalitativa metoder i form av observationer av referenssamtal och intervjuer av sju bibliotekarier som arbetar vid disken. UtvÀrderingsfrÄgorna, som ligger till grund för min uppsats, Àr pÄ vilket sÀtt webbresurserna anvÀnds i referenssamtalet, hur bibliotekarierna informeras och utbildas pÄ nya och befintliga resurser samt hur webbresurserna marknadsförs mot anvÀndarna.Som grund för min bedömning har jag anvÀnt mig av bibliotekslagen (1996:1596), Unescos folkbiblioteksmanifest och de rekommendationer, som Svensk biblioteksförening har stÀllt upp.UtifrÄn mina observationer och bibliotekariernas utsagor har jag kommit till vissa slutsatser, som kortfattat kommer att redogöras för hÀr. Webbresurserna Àr relativt osynliga i biblioteksrummet och behöver lyftas fram och marknadsföras pÄ ett mÄlmedvetet sÀtt. Vidare bör omkringliggande system underlÀttas för att avlasta referensdisken med rutinmÀssiga ickereferensfrÄgor och pÄ sÄ sÀtt skapa tid för referensfrÄgor.

The purpose of this study is to perform both a quantitative and language philosophical analysis of the folksono-my and the tags in the Stockholm public library catalogue, which together with the UmeÄ university folksonomy, and the folksonomy of the Norrköping public library are the only library folksonomies in Sweden.The purpose of the first part of the study is to perform an analysis of the linguistical structure of the tags in the folksonomy. To do this a quantitative analysis has been conducted to grammatically categorize and evaluate tags using a method based on Louise Spiteri?s article ?The structure and form of folksonomy tags: the road to the public library catalogue? and the SAO guidelines. This part of the analysis aims to answer questions like: what characteristics do the tags in the folksonomy have and in what ways do they separate themselves from subject headings in a controlled vocabulary? Tags were here categorized according to grammatical properties like parts of speech and their social and private characteristics.

I uppsatsens inledning pÄtalas att medier influerar samhÀllet och dÀrigenom mÀnniskors sÀtt att vara och kÀnna. För att utveckla arbetsmetoder som svarar mot samhÀllets syn pÄ text framhÄlls att dagens bibliotekarier bör ta detta i beaktan. Syftet med undersökningen Àr att studera bibliotekariers arbetsmetoder i samband med lÀsstimulerande arbete i ett samhÀlle som ses stÄ inför ett nytt textlandskap. Resultatet Àr en kvalitativ fallstudie som undersöker bibliotekarierna i tvÀrgruppen Unggruppen pÄ Uppsala Stadsbibliotek och deras upplevelser av fenomenet. I kapitlet ?Bakgrund och tidigare forskning? presenteras forskning om samtida text, lÀsstimulerande arbete för barn och unga och bibliotekariers arbete mot unga pÄ folkbibliotek.Det teoretiska ramverket bestÄr av ett sociokulturellt perspektiv sÄ som det beskrivs av Roger SÀljö.

Metod Min metod i denna studie har varit att genomföra en landskapsanalys i ett kulturhistoriskt perspektiv över objekt och omrĂ„de i dess kontext. Detta har gjorts genom att söka och lĂ€sa relevant litteratur som rör stadens historia ur flera perspektiv; beskrivningar, sammanhang och kausalitet (d.v.s. hĂ€ndelser, beslut och konsekvenser) av aktörer. AVGRÄNSNINGAR Uppsatsen skrivs frĂ€mst mot den bakgrunden av landskapsanalys gĂ€llande kulturhistoriska vĂ€rden. SĂ„ledes fördjupar denna sig inte i begrepp som naturvĂ€rden, biotoper, vĂ€xt och djurliv, vatten luft/klimat. Resultat Jag vill göra gĂ€llande att en stor del av resultat Ă€r de olika kapitel som beskriver tillkomst och utvecklingen av staden, parken och byggnaden. Som ett delresultat vill jag peka pĂ„ att exploateringsprocesser krĂ€ver nĂ„gon form av kvalitetssĂ€kringsprocess för att kunna bevara de kultur- och naturvĂ€rden som Ă€r definierade. Ett sĂ€tt Ă€r att implementera metoden balanserad samhĂ€llsbyggnad som juridiskt instrument (inom ex PBL).
