Älvkarleby, landscape character and design proposal is a Graduated Thesis (30 ECCcredtis), in the subject of landscape planning at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, the Department of Rural and Urban Development. This thesis is a study and implement of the method "Landscape Character Assessment" (LCA), developed in England and Scotland as tool to analyse and highlight the landscape in different planning processes. The purpose of LCA is to increase the understanding and strengthen the role of the landscape. The thesis consists of three main parts: landscape characterization, guidelines and a design proposal. The landscape characterization emphasizes the values of the landscape in different types of planning processes, a documentation to base estimations on in any kind of change in the area. Theese estimations have resulted in guidelines that give proposals to the development of the landcape, focusing at the desingproposal.

In the 1940s the Swedish town planning was inspired by the English city development with the concepts of neighbourhood and community planning. In order to promote democratic development and solidarity the ideal would be to create community centers with full service. Community centers are part of the building of the suburbs during the postwar period. The buildings in Sweden from 1940 - and -50s were built with the intentions to be good homes for all regardless of income, class and status. Collective solutions to individual problems were characteristic of the Swedish policy during this time.

In a theoretical part of the essay the significants of well functioning towns and streets are investigated. The history of Östersund and I5 is shortly reviewed. Present recommendations concerning city design are presented along with guidelines from Vägverket (National Road Administration) for urban streets. The conclusion reached is that a fundamental structure of streets and roads, public and private spaces, is crucial for the possible future development of an area.

Sweden?s role during the Second World War has been a matter that has been under much debate since the war?s end in 1945. The debate has however ebbed and flowed and established a discourse that Sweden was forced to give in to German demands and did so to avoid conflict that would have severely damaged Sweden. However, in 1991 a Swedish journalist Maria-Pia Boëthius published a book known as Heder och Samvete in which she explained that the Swedish concessions to Germany during the war were made out of profit rather than giving in to German demands. This sparked a debate that ended with the establishment that Sweden compromised and even broke its neutrality in favor to gain profit from the war.

This thesis focuseses on archives and availability. The general public seem to have trouble finding their way tothe actual archives even though most archival institutions are easily accessed and provide interesting material.Maybe it is because archives are generally not as well known as other institutions within the ALM-area, eventhough the need to know ones history and identity is considered mainstream. Whether or not history takes off atthe archives is a complex question to answer. Sustainable development and sustainability is nowadays expected to be integratedin modern city planning and permeate the entire planning process. At the sametime, sustainable development has an inherent vagueness, leading to a greatdiversity of interpretations of the meaning of this concept. In this thesis strongsustainability and ecological modernization are used as two different interpretationsof sustainable development. Using these two interpretations, an analysis of thecurrent use of the concept of sustainability within the city planning of Malmö isperformed. The purpose of this essay is to examine one of Sweden's oldest motorways in cityenvironment. The researched section is motorway E20 east of Gothenburg. Olskroksmotetin the west and Jonsered junction in the east, a distance of about 11 km. The mainquestion was, can maintenance of areas and objects related to the motorway give greatermeaning to a system that currently lacks historical connection?The survey was partly an archival study and partly a physical examination of themotorway and its appearance today.The road through Säveedalen from Gothenburg has a long history that begins with theriver and its valley as transport routes.

Norsholm kan beskrivas som en bostadsort i ett lugnt och unikt läge vid sjön Roxen och Göta kanal som på sommaren lever upp i och med omfattande turisttrafik på kanalen, vilket även lockar besökande på land. Det lilla samhället präglas av småskalighet men har närhet till en stor bostads-, studie- och arbetsmarknad. Inom regionen vill kommunerna i framtiden genom bra kommunikationer knyta samman redan etablerade orter som ett alternativ till att bygga ut nya förortsområden och i detta sammanhang nämns Norsholm som en potentiell utvecklingsort. Södra stambanan skär idag genom samhället, men tågen stannar inte här. Om Ostlänken blir verklighet, som innebär att Södra stambanan kan öppnas upp för pendeltågstrafik, skulle Norsholm kunna få en egen pendeltågsstation med täta avgångar inom regionen. Flera viktiga planeringsfrågor aktualiseras beträffande Norsholms framtid, men den viktigaste är var och hur en expansion av orten kan ske, vilket föranleder en strategi som kan formuleras genom ett program..

Både under min tidigare utbildning, främst inom nationalekonomi vid Lunds universitet, men även senare i min yrkesutövning inom bygg- och fastighetsbranschen under en period av 15 år, har jag främst kommit i kontakt med problemställningar vilka i någon mån haft som syfte att utmynna i en slutsats med kvantitativ relevans. Då jag som del av programmet Urban utveckling och planering skulle skriva en uppsats på D-nivå, ett arbete som resulterade i förevarande rapport, valde jag därför en problemformulering och en metod som båda gav mig möjlighet att bredda min kompetens, snarare än fördjupa den. Denna studie strävar efter att utveckla en teori för stadsutveckling ur ett fastighetsföretagarperspektiv. Den specifika situation som arbetet fokuserar på är stadsdelen Norra Sorgenfri i Malmö. Teorin har genererats med användning av metoden grundad teori och datorprogrammet Atlas/ti. Läsaren finner förhoppningsvis att den teori som utvecklas har en allmän relevans för stadsutveckling och hur kommunens planarbete kan förändras. Den som är intresserad av just vitaliseringen av Norra Sorgenfri bör också kunna finna något av värde.
