The purpose of this master's thesis is to examine how a Swedish public library's collection of books on African history looks like, who the writers are and how Africa and its history areportrayed. The focus of the analysis is on the front and back covers and in some cases on theinformation texts inside the books. The chosen library is the city library of Umeå. The 15books examined were found on the shelf classified as Kp ? the classification for African history according to the Swedish SAB-classification system.

This thesis is a cultural theoretical case study of the art project (O)önskad samhällsförbättring.Via an analysis of the project, that is based on theories of power, resistance and contemporaryurban development, it examines the construction of urban space, its impact on public art including the ability of art to initiate evolvement of the urban public space.The last decades art has plaid an important role in what is called the creative city; to become attractive nodal points of the global economy, larger cities increasingly invest in art,culture and creative industry. Simultaneously the urban public space is limited to activitiesand expressions of art that are presumed to create economic growth. This introduces animpression of what is allowed and what is not allowed, possible and not possible, wished andnot wished which, as a consequence, evolves the public space. The events during the artproject and the reactions that followed enlightened these limitations. This tells a story, not only about the structuring process of the local urban space, but also important changes that are created as a simultaneous effect at different levels in society, as well locally as globally.

Vikaholm är en fantastiskt trevlig plats med många fina natur-, kultur-, och rekreationsvärden. Platsen gränsar till stadsdelen Teleborg i södra Växjö. Examensarbetet beskriver hur det är möjligt att inrätta bostadsbebyggelse i ett sådant område utan att förstöra dess stora värden. Arbetets intention är istället att bostäderna skall integreras i platsens stora värden och därmed göra platsen mer tillgänglig för flera av stadens invånare..

This thesis is a report concerning the practical aspects on exhibition techniques. During an internship at the National History Museum in Stockholm I participated in the work with their new, temporary exhibition Gränslöst - en global utställning på Historiska museet [Boundless - a global voyage of discovery at the National Historical Museum]. I was part of a small project team of museum staff. The purpose of this exhibition was to show how cultures have met and influenced each other throughout history. The National Historical Museum has in its collections and exhibitions several examples of objects that has been imported from or inspired by other cultural areas.

Abstract The purpose of this study is to further understand swedish highschoolstudents perspective on the subject of history. In order to produce an answer a series of qualitative interviews were conducted with six students of mixed ages, ethnicity an gender. Their answers were evaluated using relevant didactic theories focusing on the use of history, historical consciousness as presented by Klas-Goran Karlsson. Syftet med arbetet är att undersöka fenomenet Urban Sprawl för att se om det går och få svar på varför Kungsbacka kommun ser ut som den gör idag. Kungsbacka har ett speciellt utseende med en väldigt liten centralort i förhållande till kommunens storlek. De flesta av invånarna i kommunen bor i utbredda villaområden utanför staden. Arbetet inleds med en teoridel som börjar med att beskriva Urban Sprawl i ett internationellt perspektiv för att till sist gå in på vad det har betytt för Sveriges och enskilda kommuners del. När man talar om Urban Sprawl förs ofta tankarna till USA med dess breda motorvägar, stora köpcentrum och utbredda städer.

A large number of genocides have taken place in our history. The purpose of this essay is to examine how genocide is treated in five high school history textbooks. I have studied a large number of issues. I have examined which genocides are discussed in the textbooks and which genocides the textbooks don?t discuss.

This thesis on the sustainable urban development has the intent to discuss the conservator?s position in alteration of the built environment. An essential component of the thesis consists of a case study in the form of an entry in an open architectural competition for the development of Furuset, an urban residential area in Norway. The thesis? discussion is based on two approaches to change and socio-economic transformations, considered being dominant within the heritage theory and practice: the production of ideas and great narratives and conservation as an instrumental tool.

In this qualitative thesis I have studied the process of street-naming in Budapest. I have done this primarily through examining legislative and street name records in Budapest in order to define a distinctive use of history. In an attempt to concretise public opinion, I designed and distributed a succinct questionnaire and used newspaper articles to create a clear view of the political milieu. Furthermore, I have utilised a typological method to summarise the use of history and elucidate the results. I came to the conclusion that a moral and, to some extent, ideological use of history is dominating the street-naming situation in contemporary Budapest.

Den tilltagande urbaniseringen har medfört att hamn- och industriområden som tidigare låg i stadens perifera områden har fått en alltmer central plats. Från att ha fungerat som industristäder där denna verksamhet varit en integrerad och vital katalysator för staden håller samhället nu på att övergå från industrisamhälle till kunskapssamhälle där arbetet förflyttats från förorenade och bullriga industrimiljöer till rena och tysta bostads- och kontorsmiljöer. I takt med detta minskar också behovet av centralt belägna industriområden som nu blivit mer ödsliga, otrygga och stadsfrånvända där de inte sällan bildat en barriär mot sin omgivning. Samtidigt är det idag för oss människor inte lika självklart som tidigare genom historien att använda stadens offentliga rum och det pågår mycket planering för att skapa integrerade, attraktiva och levande stadsmiljöer vid stadsomvandlingar. En problematik som uppstår är hur dessa industriområden kan omvandlas från centrala men avskilda, ödsliga och ofta stadsfrånvända industrimiljöer till funktionsblandade, attraktiva och levande stadsdelar som är väl integrerade med sin omgivning. Arbetets syfte är undersöka hur Lövholmen kan omvandlas från en avskild industrimiljö till en funktionsblandad och levande stadsdel som är väl integrerad i sin omgivning.

Arbetet studerar de odefinierade platserna i staden. Det handlar om de överblivna och övergivna platserna, som står i kontrast till de planerade och funktionsbestämda. Dessa platser kan till synes sakna funktion och användning i staden men så behöver fallet nödvändigtvis inte vara. Beroende på vilket sätt man vill framhäva dessa odefinierade platser i staden används olika definitioner. En litteraturstudie har gjorts på fyra olika författares definitioner av icke-platser. Vilka tänkbara förklaringar finns det för uppkomsten av dessa platser i staden och har det funnits motsättningar? Genom litteraturen framkommer det några tänkbara förklaringar och som tas upp och presenteras.

Det här kandidatarbetet behandlar hur en typisk förortsmiljö, Rotebro centrum i Sollentuna kommun, med hjälp av rådande blandstadsidéer kan utvecklas till att bli en miljö som präglas av blandade och integrerade funktioner. Med utgångspunkt i kommunens översiktsplan tas ett gestaltningsförslag fram med hjälp av rådande teori. Syftet med uppsatsen är att undersöka och beskriva blandstad som ett planeringsbegrepp och se hur Rotebro centrum kan förtätas och utvecklas med en blandstadskaraktär för att upplevas trivsamt, tryggt och levande. Hur skapas en tydligare urban karaktär och vilka funktioner kan inkluderas. Genom aktivitetsobservationer, intervjuer och platsanalyser identifieras nuvarande problem och möjligheter. Nuvarande svårigheter finns i bullerproblematiken som idag gör sig påmind i stora delar av området, från både passerande tågtrafik, närliggande motorväg och flygtrafik.

Museums are a part of the cultural sector that over the last couple of years had to compete with the steadily growing consumption of spectacles. New techniques to attract and amaze the visitors have evolved. Living History Museums has developed a method to simulate past times by building up an environment with reconstructions. History is a non-definite science, there will never be an exact answer to how it really was, for example during the Middle Ages.This essay deals with the difference between reconstructions and authentic artefacts and how they build up an illusion of the past. In what sense does it matter if the artefacts are genuine or not? How do these museums deal with anachronistic phenomena from today's modern world in the historic environment? Additionally I discuss whether or not these reconstructions - of environment, buildings and personal characters - have any influence on the historic narrative given by the museum.
