Driving Simulators are a very important part of the research that is done at VTI. Enhancing the realism and creating a better driving experience in the Simulators are very important and an ongoing work process for the engineers and researchers who work with the Simulators. This project has been done as a part of this developing process and the purpose is to enhance the realism of the rear-view mirrors.Simulating realistic rear-view mirrors has been demanded, not only from the researchers at VTI, but also from car and truck manufacturers. To achieve a realistic mirror view a method to measure and parameterize real mirrors has been developed. The code for the existing graphics system has also been redone to be able to handle the new types of mirrors introduced..

At Forsmark nuclear power plant a new course called "education in everyday safety" has been started in an attempt to improve the safety culture. The goal is to spread the of expectations and approach the maintenance management has set, to all employees working at the plants. During the course, theory is mixed with practical tasks to reach a common view how work should be done to achieve safety for the plant and the people that work there.The practical tasks are done inside "maintenance Simulators". They are built inside 20 ft containers which contains two dummy pipe systems. On the pipe systems some valves, a flow meter and a pump has been installed.
Simulerad interaktiv arbetsmiljö : Från teori till design och implementering
This is a thesis on D-level. In a previous course, at our program Computer Science, we came up with an idea of how to improve/complement training for new employees who are situated in a stressful workplace at companies who are in a constant need of rehiring. We developed this concept and came up with an idea for a simulator that could train staff as well as relieve stress and tension for new employees. The idea matured and became a Serious Game simulator based on a dual-wield Wii-controlled PC-based simulator with Bluetooth support.The purpose of this paper is to produce a design concept for a simulator as well as conducting research on the topics: mental and physical learning abilities, psychomotor abilities, visual perception, hand-eye coordination, confidence, Simulators and Serious Games. The conducted research will be the foundation for the design concept which will be implemented in our co-workers', Henrik Djerf & Daniel Gomez-Ortega, prototype.

A key part in the development and verification of digital systems is simulation. But hardware Simulators are expensive, and software simulation is not fast enough for designs with a large number of gates. As today?s digital zesigns constantly grow in size (number of gates), and that trend shows no signs to end, faster Simulators handling millions of gates are needed. We investigate how to create a software gate-level simulator able to simulate a high number of gates fast.
Real-time rendering of large terrains using algorithms for continuous level of detail
Three-dimensional computer graphics enjoys a wide range of applications of which games and movies are only few examples. By incorporating three-dimensional computer graphics in to a simulator the simulator is able to provide the operator with visual feedback during a simulation. Simulators come in many different flavors where flight and radar Simulators are two types in which three-dimensional rendering of large terrains constitutes a central component.Ericsson Microwave Systems (EMW) in Skövde is searching for an algorithm that (a) can handle terrain data that is larger than physical memory and (b) has an adjustable error metric that can be used to reduce terrain detail level if an increase in load on other critical parts of the system is observed. The aim of this paper is to identify and evaluate existing algorithms for terrain rendering in order to find those that meet EMW: s requirements. The objectives are to (i) perform a literature survey over existing algorithms, (ii) implement these algorithms and (iii) develop a test environment in which these algorithms can be evaluated form a performance perspective.The literature survey revealed that the algorithm developed by Lindstrom and Pascucci (2001) is the only algorithm of those examined that succeeded to fulfill the requirements without modifications or extra software.
Förbättring av upplösningen i Landsat 7-bilder med hjälp av bildfusion
The purpose of this master's thesis is to evaluate whether it is feasible to use the panchromatic band of Landsat 7 in order to improve the spatial resolution of colour images. The images are to be used as texture in visual databases for flight Simulators and for this reason it is important that the fusion preserves natural colours.A number of methods for fusing panchromatic and multispectral images are discussed. Four of them are implemented and evaluated. The result is that standard methods such as HSI substitution are not suitable for this purpose since they do not preserve natural colours. However, if only high frequencies of the panchromatic image are used the resolution can be improved without noticeable colour distortion..
Simbase: ?Simulator Base Package?
The purpose of this work is to providing a general set of base classes for building Simulators, for example a robot system. Instead of every time building a new simulator from the beginning, you get the already completed components from a library. The library should in that way act as a springboard for development.To do this work, there?s a lot of knowledge required in how a general robot system could look like. Therefore it was necessary to gather some information about robotics.
Environment simulation of track-based systems
Simulation means running a model of a system with suitable input and observing the corresponding output. Real-time environment simulation is a special kind of simulation used to simulate a control system's environment in real-time. This is done to test the control system before it is used in its real environment. In this project, computer simulation of a certain kind of environments, called track-based systems, is studied and a general model for track-based systems is developed. In this model, track layouts are represented by graphs, which is a flexible and extensible representation and a method for visualizing these layouts is presented.
Effekt på värdeutfallet av sågad vara vid övergång från 30 till 60 cm moduler : - en fallstudie av Moelven
The purpose of this study is to explain how the value of sawn wood changes when sawn wood are cut in 30 respective 60 cm lengths. The raw material into the saw mill will mainly be bucked in 30cm and 60 cm modules. There will also be two alternatives where the timber will be bucked special lengths, 370, 490 and 550 cm but also in 490 and 550 cm.The method used for the study is to simulate both cutting and sawing the woods. For cutting the simulator Timan is used and for sawing the simulator Timberopt is used. When data is generatedfrom the Simulators, calculations of some key figures is done and also how much the revenue need to be increased for the sawn wood in order to cover for the increased costs of changing sawn woodfrom 30 cm to 60 cm modulesThe conclusion is that the single biggest reason, impacting the value of the sawn wood is the cutting at the saw mill.When going from 30 to 60 cm modules, the impact will be that the customers to the saw mill must pay more to increase the revenue by at least 10% for the sawn wood in order to justifice the changein production.It is also possible to increase the value of the products further by bucking the timber in three lengths, 370, 490 and 550 cm, in order to get 12 % increase of the share of longer sawn wood (>= 480 cm)..
Utvärdering och implementering av automatiska farthållare i fordonssimulator
Vehicle Simulators are becoming more common in vehicle industries. Company earns lot of money on simulations instead of real tests. Real tests are necessary but not made so extensively as before.In this thesis the building of an vehice simulator will be described and a comparison between three different cruise controls. The three cruise controls are PI-regulator, a regulator who regulates after positions in the terrain and a MPC-regulator. The reason for choosing this three is to see the difference between simple regulation and more complex regulation with respect to fuel consumption, travel time and complexity.The vehicle simulator is made in Matlab/Simulink, Visual Studio and Open Scene Graph.
Utvärdering av simulatorer och emulatorer för inbyggda system
Uppdragsgivaren Saab Electronic Defence Systems i Jönköping erbjuder ett flertal produkter främst inom avioniksystem. För att kunna utvärdera och kontrollera produktens design i ett tidigt skede så kan en simulering av systemets beteende och att felsöka så tidigt som möjligt vara ett möjligt alternativ. En systemsimulering kan innebära att mjukvaruutveckling och felsökning kan påbörjas långt innan hårdvaruprototypen är tillgänglig, med samma storlek och komplexitet som systemet.Andra fördelar med simulering är att det går enklare att fastställa orsaken till systemkrasch, hitta de längsta exekveringstiderna och göra felinjiceringar. Syftet med detta examensarbete är att testa och utvärdera hur simulatorer och emulatorer är som utvecklings- och testverktyg.Rapporten innehåller en marknadsundersökning där tio stycken emulatorer och simulatorer hittades. Av dessa valdes två stycken ut, Wind River Simics och Imperas OVPSim.
Jämförande simulering och modellering av framtida järnvägars elenergiförsörjning
In this thesis, the Train Power System Simulator (TPSS) has been compared and verified with the commercial simulator TracFeed® Simulation (TracFeed). The basis for the comparison was a given part of the Swedish railway system, with steel transportation trains. Primarily, emphasis was placed on running time and energy consumption in simulation results. Two transformer systems were analyzed, booster and auto transformers. The high voltage transmission line, parallel to the railroad track, was disconnected in some simulations.
Målinriktad träning eller bortkastad tid? : insatspiloters användning av simulatorer
Sammanfattning:Det svenska flygvapnet har lång erfarenhet av simulatorer och de används för pilotutbildning och träning inom många av de flygsystem som flygvapnet opererar. Dock visar statistik på att nyttjandegraden av dessa anläggningar inte är fullständig. Det tillsammans med att det i vissa fall saknas en tydlig och tillräcklig inriktning för verksamheten, väcker frågor kring hur effektivt simulatorerna egentligen används.Syftet med denna uppsats var att undersöka om piloter som tjänstgör på en insatsdivision i det svenska flygvapnet upplever att deras träning i simulatorer tillför något till deras kunnande och utveckling, samt hur deras upplägg och genomförande av träningen i själva verket ser ut.Undersökningen genomfördes som kvalitativa intervjuer med insatspiloter under en träningsperiod i Flygvapnets Luftstridssimuleringscenter (FLSC). Deras svar analyserades sedan med hjälp av operationella indikatorer härledda ur såväl allmänna träningsteorier som mer specifika forskningsresultat kopplade till simulatorers egenskaper i sig.Resultatet visar att piloterna anser att simulatorer är ett värdefullt komplement till deras flygträning och om flygvapnets simulatorer nyttjas på ett ineffektivt sätt, beror det med stor sannolikhet inte på insatspiloternas inställning till simulatorträning eller bristande kunskaper hos dessa kring hur simulatorer bör användas..
Implementering av realtidsvideolänk med MPEG- och wavelet-teknik
At Saab Aerosystems, situated in Linköping Sweden, there is a presentation and manoeuvre simulator simulating the fighter jet JAS-39 Gripen. This flight simulator is called PMSIM. In this thesis we study how to transfer sensor images generated by PMSIM to other Simulators or desktop computers. The transmission is band-limited so some kind of image coding must be used. Because of this the greater part of this thesis is concerned with image coding.
Vikten av Ljud för Navigation i Virtuell Miljö : Orientering med Binaural ljudsimulering
Dagens digitala spel är oerhört komplexa produktioner som ofta kräver en multitud av sofistikerade verktyg för att förverkligas. Ett intrikat nätverk av moderna lösningar där såväl visuella som audiovisuella element samverkar för att frambringa fängslande och entusiasmerande upplevelser är vad som gör dagens spelproduktioner, och ingen annan bransch har sett samma raketutveckling som spelbranschen sedan dess begynnelse. Ljuddesignens roll i digitala spel har dock förblivit passiv där andra element tagit an mer dynamiska roller i varierande form. Generellt sett är ljudet oftast mer ett komplement till de visuella elementen än ett fristående förmedlingsredskap. Då audiovisuell kommunikation ej delar vissa av de begränsningar som visuell kommunikation innehar, såsom grafisk processeringskraft, bildskärmsavgränsningar etc, så ser vi att ljuddesign besitter en stor mängd outnyttjad potential som i teorin hade kunnat förgylla spelupplevelser kolossalt.Det här arbetet undersöker både genom analoga och digitala medel hur införandet av binaural lyssning i spelproduktioner kan förbättra navigationsförutsättningarna för användaren avsevärt då djup och höjd kan skildras mycket mer effektivt, samt hur dess applicering i tredimensionella miljöer kan främja såväl nöjes som lärosyften i så kallade Audio based Environment Simulators (AbES).
