The subject-matter of the following essay is to investigate the relationship between what is commonly called Deep Ecology or Biocentric Philosophy, as articulated by the co-founder of the Deep Ecology Movement, Arne Naess, and later proponents of the biocentric school of environmentalist thought. I contrast Naess? concept of Self-realization as founded in his Ecosophy T to the ideas of american conservationist and co-founder of the radical green movement Earth First! Dave Foreman, and to the controversial finnish environmentalist and ecofascist Pentti Linkola?s ideological agenda of population-reduction respectively.According to some critics of the movement, especially the social ecologist Murray Bookchin and French liberal philosopher Luc Ferry, the Deep Ecology ideology is essentially misanthropic and totalitarian in structure. A central idea among deep ecologists is that ecosystems and natural entities have intrinsic value in themselves, even outside a human social context. This idea is thought of among deep ecologists to create a philosophically sound basis for counteracting the environmental global crisis.

Denna uppsats syftar till att kvalitativt undersöka hur kvinnor porträtteras i femutvalda avsnitt av The Hills (MTV), med fokus på deras beteende och uppträdande ifrågor som karriär, utseende och relationer till män. Detta undersöks med hjälp av ettanalysschema som har utformats utifrån Keith Selbys och Ron Cowderysanalysmodell för att studera television. Undersökningen vilar på en genusteoretisk grund och teorier som används är blandannat R.W. Connells hegemoniska maskulinitet, Yvonne Hirdmans genuskontrakt,Laura Mulveys ?the male gaze? och en vidare utveckling av Foucaults teori om ?thepanopticon?. Detta kompletteras med forskning av bland annat Rosalind Gill, AngelaMcRobbie och Hillevi Ganetz. I min analys framkommer att det förekommer väldigt få skildringar av kvinnor varsbeteende utmanar en traditionell syn på kvinnligt uppförande.

A Study of the Swedish Press Views on the Health Insurance Reform in the USA? The purpose of this essay is partly to examine whether the picture that Swedish press presents of the health insurance reform in the US, which is part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Act bill, will be of crucial importance to the possibilities that the American population has to receive health insurance. The main research question is accordingly: ?Does the picture that Swedish press presents of the health insurance reform in the USA, seem like something that will be of radical importance to the possibilities of the population to receive healthcare?? The purpose is also to examine in which model (demand or market) the opinions of the Swedish press fits. This purpose will be answered by using three specific questions asking whether their opinions differ when it comes to three criterions: organization, financing/resources and delivery systems.

In this study we examine five selected media organisations with different forms of productionplatforms that all appear in Stockholm's southern and western suburbs, which are part of themillion-construction project. Their stated ambition is to present an alternative image of thesuburbs than that found in mainstream media. They want to portray themselves instead ofconstantly being described by others.The purpose of the study is to gain a better understanding of the reason for the emergenceof these media, their visions according to the media producers themselves, and how theyrelate to mainstream media. The study is based on a theoretical framework that focuses ondiverse approaches of alternative media and the journalists' role in a democratic society.The wide data analysis from qualitative informant interviews, with small observations as acomplement, showed results indicating criticism against the misrepresentation of Stockholmsuburbs in mainstream media. Furthermore the results show that the overall dissatisfaction ofthis misrepresentation is one of the main reasons why the different media, which are bothrepresented by citizens and journalists, were founded.

FN har sedan starten varit en tongivande gestalt för demokratisering och människorätt. Trots detta passerade 30 år innan organisationen manifesterade sitt motstånd mot den frekventa diskrimineringen av kvinnor. Därefter har jämställdhetsarbetet undergått flera genomgripande paradigmskiften. FNs fjärde globala kvinnokonferens utgjorde startskottet för ännu ett nytt progressivt tänkande kring jämställdhet och respekt för kvinnors mänskliga rättigheter.Denna uppsats behandlar FNs jämställdhetssyn med särskilt fokus på ambitionen att utforma globalt fungerande principer. Genom kritisk analys granskas FNs uppfattning om jämställdhetsproblematiken ur ett feministiskt perspektiv.

Beyond the binary borders of sex -A LITTERATURE STUDY ABOUT TRANSGENDER THEORY AND ITS POSSIBLE CONTRIBUTION TO A SOCIAL WORK CONTEXT. GERGANA TOSEVA KARIN SELIN A thesis in Social work studies (15 credits) at Malmö University, Hälsa och Samhälle 2012. The discussion about sex and gender is always prominent in a social work context. Our purpose and questions are hence based on the discussion on transgender theory and the way of thinking about the non-binary, and how it relates to the nearby theories. The method of the essay consists of a semi systematic literature overview with the focus on discussing transgender theory in relation to other theories and perspectives, such as modernism, post modernism, feminism and queer theory. We answer the following questions: 1. Is it possible to go beyond or exceed the binary of sex and if so, how do we see it in the material we examined? 2. In what way are the existing theories of sex / gender in the binary? 3. Can one featuring a female embodied subject be of assistance to transgender people's search for an embodied subject? We consider it possible to move beyond the binary by using ?fuzzy logic?(Nagoshi & Brzuzy 2010, Tauchert 2002) which is a way of staying in the binary but expanding the term and work in the grey areas instead.

The thesis explores the meaning of the concept "children's best" in relation to the social Swedish parental insurance debate from a post-structuralist view. The main material has been taken from daily news papers and the methodological as well as theoretical basis is provided for by Laclau & Mouffes discourse theory. In particular has the concept "empty signifiers" been of use when investigating "children's best" as a strong argument on both the "pro" and "against" sides of the debate of an individualized parental insurance. The theoretic purpose of the thesis is also to examine the poststructuralist/feminist dilemma in order to approach a more pragmatic and useful model of the two combined provided by Alcoff and Fraser. One conclusion is that "children's best" may never have an objective answer and will be a changing concept in time, ideology preference and discoursive field.

AbstractSyftet med vår uppsats var att undersöka mediebilden av de två nystartade partierna Feministiskt initiativ och Junilistan. Vi ville undersöka hur kvällstidningarna vinklar politiska händelser och om någon skillnad kan skönjas i rapporteringen partierna emellan. Materialet till vår undersökning hämtades från Aftonbladet och Expressen under perioden 2004-01-01 till 2005-10-15. Den teoretiska tyngden i uppsatsen utgjordes av teorier om feminism och medielogiken. Vår problemformulering och det vi letade efter i artiklarna var:· Hur vinklas artiklarna utifrån deras manifesta tema, sammanhang och utsago?· Har artiklarna en positiv eller negativ attityd till partierna?· Hur kommer medielogiken till uttryck i artiklarna?· I vilken utsträckning kommer partierna till tals?· Hur kan eventuella skillnader i medierapporteringen förklaras?Utifrån dessa genomförde vi sedan en kvalitativ studie av hur mediebilden av de båda partierna utvecklats.

The concept of a Sharia compliant financial system has been a frequently discussed topic among scholars, bankers and media since the 1960th. It origins from the prohibition of interest, riba, which is stated in the Quran. Islamic banking is spread across the Muslim world and also exists in some western countries. This paper will try to create an image of what Islamic banking is in theory and in practice. This will be done by looking into the different methods of interest free banking, the Quran and the annual reports of four Islamic banks in different countries.

Studien visar att kvinnornas erfarenheter av patriarkala strukturer och kulturella normer spelar en betydande roll i deras inst?llning till f?r?ndring och hur de f?rh?ller sig till sin kulturella identitet.

The purpose of this Master?s thesis is to examine the relationship between fiction and resistance from a postcolonial and feminist perspective. More specifically, the study is an examination of this relationship in ten novels by the Nigerian writer Buchi Emecheta. The resistance is studied by examining the way it is depicted in the texts, as well as whether the texts can be seen as a form of opposition. Both the resistance and its context are studied.

This master?s thesis investigates how six Swedish public libraries integrate equality aspects in their user oriented activity. The theoretical starting point for the study is that Sweden is a part of a gender system characterized by gender separation and male superiority, as described by the Swedish historian Yvonne Hirdman and theories that argue that femininity and masculinity are social constructions. Another starting point is that the library sphere cannot be separated from the gender inequality in society. Since the library is part of a gender system that value individuals who are seen as males and separates men and women, some of the library users may be neglected.

Abort/Motstånd är en diskursanalytisk studie av text och bild hämtade från den internetbaserade verksamheten hos de svenska abortkritiska organisationerna Ja till livet och Människorätt för ofödda. Uppsatsens övergripande syfte är att urskilja hur kvinnan och hennes kropp konstrueras inom antiabortrörelsens internetbaserade verksamhet ? det vill säga den diskursordning som behandlas.Det teoretiska ramverket utgår från kvinnligt subjektskap och kroppslighet, abort analyseras även i relation till graviditet och/eller moderskap. Analysen tar avstamp i kvinnans situation och behandlar body/mind-distinktionen, samt problematiserar denna i relation till den medicinska västerländska diskurs som ofta fråntar den gravida kvinnan subjektsstatus. Av analysen framgår det att huvuddragen i motståndsdiskurserna, i relation till kvinnlig autonomi, karaktäriseras av tre drag: att fostret tilldelas super-subjektstatus, att den gravida kvinnan berövas sitt subjektskap och att kvinnor som vill göra abort närmast porträtteras som monster.

Hedersrelaterat våld och praktiserandet av traditioner som arrangerade äktenskap och polygami har aktualiserat diskurser rörande erkännande av kulturella divergenser i en rad västliga länder. Studiens syfte är att belysa ståndpunkter i diskursen som rör kvinnors individuella rättigheter och gruppens rättigheter i ett mångkulturellt sammanhang vilket sker ut ett textanalytiskt perspektiv samt ur det levda livets. Jag utgår från filosofen Martha Nussbaum teori om mänskliga funktionsförmågor och definition av mänskliga rättigheter. Jag har analyserat två aktörers texter i diskursen, Susan Moller Okin (förespråkar individrättigheter) samt Charles Taylor (förespråkar grupprättigheter). Studiens centrala fråga samt övergripande frågeställningar är:Vad är mänskliga rättigheter?- ur det filosofiska perspektivet,- ur Taylors respektive Okins ståndpunkter och- ur det levda livets?Jag har intervjuat en kvinna, från en annan kulturell kontext än den svenska, om hennes valmöjligheter och handlingsutrymme.
