The aim of this masters thesis is to examine the information access of female Ph. D. students in connection with their situation as women and researchers within the academic setting. In order to examine this, qualitative interviews with ten female Ph. D.

Through participant observation in a local promoter group of hardcore punk shows inGothenburg and qualitative interviews with its members I have investigated links between taste in music, values and social structures in the hardcore punk scene. The theoretical framework of this essay is built upon the concept of subcultural capital, which is adapted from Pierre bourdieu and developed by Sarah Thornton and Keith Kahn-Harris. The result shows how members among the hardcore punk scene create and preserve distinction towards others, while the distinction becomes important benchmarks for including and excluding practices in the scene..

This paper starts where previous research in this scientific field, research about individuals who managed to end their criminal lifestyle, ends ? by talking in terms of Pierre bourdieu?s forms of capital. In former studies the researchers pointed out access to a job and parenting as helpful factors to end a criminal lifestyle. Our purpose with this paper, however, was to find out if it is possible to understand criminals successfully ending their criminal lifestyle from Bourdieu?s capital metaphors and Mark Granovetter?s concept of strong and weak ties.

 Why is it that we still live in a society where an individual's social background plays such a big part in their chances of reaching a higher education? Despite the numerous educational policy reforms, especially in Sweden, it still seems that an individual's career choices are pretty much related to what kind of social class they grew up in. Sociologist Pierre bourdieu claimed that social class is reproduced in the school system, and that students from the lower classes are much less likely to reach a further education than students from the middle or upper classes due to injustice in the school system. One thing that plays a big part in this "Catch-22" situation is the concept that Bourdieu calls habitus. Habitus could be explained as an individual's taste, knowledge, ability to master the spoken language, etc. Your habitus is manifested in the choices you make, the music you listen to, how you dress and the way you speak, and it determines your relation to the education system and life in general. As part of my essay, I wanted to interview students from lower or working class at my school, Konstfack, to see if they have had any negative or positive experiences from their encounter with a higher education. And if so, could they be linked directly to their social background? As a reaction to my own and my interviewees? experiences and frustration, I use the concept of habitus in my practical work.

This Master?s thesis concerns the question why a public library establishes a special room for young people and how the young people can influence the activities. I have made interviews with two librarians and four teenagers from a reference group. I have also made an observation of the room. The most important theories are Pierre bourdieu?stheory of symbolic capital and Mats Lieberg?s theory of free zones.

Uppsatsen avser att undersöka hur den Italienska och den Italiensk-Amerikanska maffian gestaltas inom det moderna film och tv-mediet. Undersökningen baseras på den Amerikanska dramaserien Sopranos(David Chase, 1999-2007) och den Italienska filmen Gomorrah(Matteo Garrone, 2008). Teoretiska utgångspunkter för uppsatsen är politisk filosofi (Macchiavelli, Hobbes), Pierre bourdieus habitus begrepp, ideologikritik, cultural studies och socialpsykologi. Slutsatsen visar en tydlig skillnad mellan de olika filmtexterna vad gäller såväl narrativ, ideologiska aspekter och psykologiskt orienterad människosyn, samt reflekterar över maffiafilmers roll utifrån en populärkulturell kontext..

Can the need for inclusion result in certain social norms remain unchallenged, and over time become hard to identify? To ?fit in? and be accepted in different social contexts we have to behave according to the dominating rules and conventions. We accept characteristics and make use of attributes specific for the group we want to be a part of. When we accept these attributes we contribute to keep the concept of them alive. Further on these attributes will be picked up by the next person who wants to become a part of that specific context.

This Master?s thesis explores the staff responsible for children?s culture in the south of Sweden, in north-east Scania. This thesis seeks to answer the following questions: What kind of culture is offered to children in their spare time? Can children influence culture in the investigated region, and do the people in charge listen to the children?s ideas? How are children in the region informed about cultural events? In my research I used enquiries and worked with the investigation program Query & Report to collect the material. The study consists of the staff, i.e.

 Tora Vega Holmström (1880-1967) beskrivs ofta som en avantgardistisk kolorist som gärna använde exotiska motiv. I min uppsats redogör jag för TVHs förutsättningar, strategier och status i konstens Sverige med tonvikt på åren 1910-1930, med hjälp av sociologen Pierre bourdieus modell för maktpositionering i kulturella fält. Dessutom görs en översiktlig beskrivning i TVHs porträtt- och figurbilder, men tonvikt på det varierande bildspråket och den öppna inställning hon tycks ha haft gentemot sina modeller. En av hennes ?negerbilder? Utanför ett musikcafé i Biskra analyseras ur ett postkolonialt perspektiv och verket ställs i relation till det tidiga nittonhundratalets värderingar och till TVHs egna ord.

In 1972 a national higher education for librarians was started. Up until then different categories of librarians got their education separately. The aim of this Master's thesis is to explore the attitude towards this new education for librarians. The study will concentrate on the attitude of the representatives from the research libraries. Researchlibraries had, until 1972, recruted their librarians amongst Ph.D-level scholars.

Within the field of cinema studies, the question of visual representation is a fundamental pillar. An immense volume of theoretical work has been written on the subject, with various academic approaches such as feministic, postcolonial and gay/lesbian. Yet there is a large social group that seems to have been overlooked within the representational discourse: the elderly. This group of people appears to be a blind spot on the multicultural retina, too often neglected within the area of cultural studies. But as the baby boomer generation, who has always redefined the different stages of life (youth, adulthood, middle age), is entering old age, things are slowly changing.

I denna uppsats har vi undersökt elevers attityder till betygskriterier på ett yrkesförberedande gymnasieprogram. Undersökningen har visat att det på skolan finns en form av elevkultur som gör att många inte utvecklar strategier för att nå de högre betygen. En av orsakerna är att betygskriterierna nästan enkom används summativt. Eleverna saknar förståelse av betygskriterierna vilket vi kopplat samman med Pierre bourdieus sociologi, genom att se elevernas attityder som en kollision med det rådande skolsystemets institutionaliserade betygsramar. Eleverna har inte skapat allianser med betygssystemet.

Within media and communications studies, questions of taste have often been associated with the dichotomy of high versus popular culture. The French sociologist Pierre bourdieu has also used mass media products in his studies of class determined tastes and dispositions. In this paper the author uses the theoretical framwork of Bourdieu to examine aspects of social class and legitimate taste in the interior design magazine "Sköna Hem", a market leading magazine within it's genre of lifestyle magazines in Sweden. A specific type of feature article, where a real-life home is portrayed, is studied using the critical discourse analysis of Norman Fairclough. The homes portrayed are predominantly affluent and display elements of conspicuous consumtion as mediated through legitimate taste and cultural capital.
