Man och kvinna till salu : En studie av manliga kontra kvinnliga modemagasins framställning av genus och konsumtion
Due to the developments in today's gender discussions, this essay aimed at investigating the gendered constructions and encouragements to consumption. As a former fashion student I have a special interest in the commercial constructions featured in fashion magazines, especially since advertising, fashion and perceptions of gender have long walked hand in hand. Just as feminism studies have shown femininity being a fluid identity, recent studies of masculinities, media and culture are also showing changes in the depictions of men.The aim was to clarify how fashion magazines encourage men and women to consume products and ideals, and also discuss the gender constructions occurring in the junction of editorial and commercial text (articles and advertisements). The analysis was thereof based on three main questions:- How is consumption encouraged in male and female fashion magazines?- What kind of gendered pattern appears in the junction of advertisement and editorial text?- With regard to the gender constructions, what is the reader encouraged to consume? The theoretical framework of the analysis was based on gender studies and political economy, mostly describing a commercial perception of feminine journalism and a new metrosexual expression in men?s fashion and lifestyle magazines.By using a combination of quantitative (content analysis) and qualitative (semiotics) approach two fashion magazines, Elle and King Magazine (published in May 2013) were used as representatives of fashion magazines in general. The results showed clear differences between the sexes.

It was often showed that elements regarding the magazine s?identity had been changed, for example text fonts.

Äktenskapsideal i svenska giftermålstidningar 1914 och 1924 : föremål för liberal styrningspolitik
This essay analyses two swedish magazines about marriage, called "giftermålstidningar", from 1914 and 1924. Either an older, christian tradition from brittish baptist Frederick Brotherton Meyer, or the swedish economist Knut Wicksell, who represents the Neo-Malthusian world view.
Elektroniska spel i tidningsfältet : En studie av recensenters förhållningssätt till dator- och TV-spel
This paper considers the roles of critics, newspapers and magazines, in the process ofdescribing computer games and video games as either technical objects or products intendedfor entertainment. The making and ?using? of computer games and videogames originates in small groups ofpeople possessing a lot of knowledge in computers, during a time when these kinds of deviceswere very expensive. But now, the gaming culture has grown and almost anyone in oursociety can own and play a video game. For that reason, one could ask the questions ?are thegames and the people who plays them still parts of a ?technical culture??? and ?do we needsome kind of prior knowledge to fully understand the videogame critics??The critics represent ?the official idea? of what a videogame is, how it works and if it is worthplaying.

Themain questions we based our study on are: What kind of relationship does the editor in chiefcreate with the intended reader? What conception of the world does the editor in chief createin the editorials? How does the editor in chief portray masculinity and femininity? In order to answer the questions above we performed a qualitative analysis of the editorials offour lifestyle magazines published during 2007. According tothis theory gender is constructed during our childhood and adolescense by the individuals andthe society surrounding us.
Pop, identitet och genus i Kamratposten och Julia
AbstractIn this essay I am examining the representation of popmusic with particular focus on gender and identity in two youth magazines called Kamratposten and Julia. Using the method of Norman Faircloughs critical discourse analysis I have studied ten interviews with popmusicians from each magazine based on the theorys of representations, discourses within popularmusic and queer theory. The intention with this study was to examine how popularmusic is represented in youth magazines. If the magazines were reproducing femininity and masculinity in the interviews with the musicians, and in the representation of popmusic in the magazines. And also if there were any differences and similarities between the magazines regarding the representation of popmusicians. The analysis lead to the conclusions that how popmusic is represented in the magazines depends on what the magazines wan´t to represent on the basis of their target groups and ideologies.
