The 1900s saw two incidents of states using their military in civil disorder situations, which resulted in the killing of unarmed citizens. May 14, 1931 in Ådalen, marks a significant part of Swedish history and its view of the use of military force.  On that day, a peaceful protest march escalated, which resulted in live firing by the military stationed there to uphold law and order. This resulted in the deaths of five civilians and the prohibition of the use of military force in incidents of civil disorder. In 1972 in Northern Ireland a similar event took place on January 30, which is commonly known as Bloody Sunday. The Troubles were raging and resulted in protests for civil rights by nationalists.

The main purpose of this study is to show how narrative can be understood as cultural practice, how it can be said to function both internally and externally, and to ask questions about how the narrating subject, through the organizing of narrative, positions it self and mediates between the different discoursive contexts of which it is a part. This is done by an analisys of how six swedish soldiers tells the tale of how they came to choose a military carrer and why they have served or want to serve in peace-keeping missions abroad. The source material is primarily collected through unstructured interviews with theese soldiers, but also through textual analysis of a soldier blog. Theoretically the study draws on a combination of the discourse theory of Michel Foucault, narrative theory, Richard Jenkins theory of the internal-external dialectic of identifikation and intersectionality to construct a framework that allows the narratives to be deconstructed and understood as discoursive products of both the military contexts as such and the larger cultrual context that surrounds it. The conclusions of this study suggests that the organizing of soldier narratives are a complex and multifaceted process, in which the soliders must balance between the ideals, values and Norms of the military context while also taking into account how society at large views and interprets the practices and forms of military life.

The aim of this master thesis?s is to examine what functions writing activities can have in the public library. Some public libraries offer their visitors writing activities, for example courses and camps. The public library is an institution with a particular identity, with special Norms and properties which participants within the institution construct and reproduce. The main question of this thesis is to investigate how writing activities can be a part of the public library?s institutional identity and what functions writing activities in the public library can have.

I detta examensarbete har jag granskat två läromedel ur ett genusperspektiv. Båda böckerna, A Piece of Cake 2 och Allez hop 8, riktar sig till elever som läser engelska och franska i grundskolans senare år. Frågan jag ställt mig är hur dessa båda böcker, i sin utformning, lyckas leva upp till de krav som styrdokumenten ställer på jämställdhet mellan män och kvinnor samt vilken som bäst lever upp till dessa krav.Resultaten av min undersökning visar att båda läroböckerna till väldigt stor del är fast i en traditionell utformning där genusvariationer i yrke, fritid, hur man beskrivs samt familjemönster begränsas till förmån för en manlig norm. Böckerna reproducerar uppfattningen om att män och kvinnor lever i olika sfärer vilket förmedlar en bild av att män och kvinnor tillskrivs olika värde i en samhällshierarki där kvinnan inte har samma möjligheter som mannen.Jag har även kommit fram till Allez hop är den bok där texter och bilder är mest nyanserade, som på ett bättre sätt luckrar upp de traditionella könsmönster som råder idag och som, med vissa delar av sitt innehåll, har stora möjligheter att skapa diskussion i språkklassen. Detta konstaterande väger dock inte upp mot det faktum att ovan nämnda läroböcker på intet sätt lever upp till kraven styrdokumenten ställer på jämställda läroböcker..

The public libraries in Sweden has an obligation to serve all of its citizens, but despite of this they often fail to include their LGBTQ-patrons. Since the year of 2008 RFSL (the Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights) have arranged a specially designed certification-process based on normcritical criterias that a chosen institution should fulfill to make their work more inclusive for LGBTQ-people. Sollentuna is the first municipal in Sweden to certificate all of their libraries. This study aims to examine what the certification have meant for the public library in Sollentuna and how a normcritical view can contribute to include LGBTQ-patrons at the library. As a method we used a qualitative interview-study to get a full picture of the certification-process and its influence on the public library of Sollentuna.

The purpose of this study was to explore how interpersonal relationship can be affected by groing up in a New Religoius Movement such as Jehovah?s Withnesses and how it has affected them both in their youth and today. The aim was also to explore if there were people in the respondents' environment that was significant to them during their childhood and which support our respondents have received if they were in need of it.We have not found any previous research on children's social relationships within the Jehovah's Witnesses. We therefore believe that this study is of high relevance to both society and also for all the professionals who come into contact with these children. To discover a child in need, knowledge about how their social environment looks like is crucial.

The purpose of this study is to examine a preschool's work to counteract traditional gender roles, which strategies are used and how Norms about gender roles are produced and treated. The study also examines whether the preschool has an intersectional perspective in it's gender work, which analyzes how they relate to other categories such as ethnicity, race, class, age and sexuality in their work. I have been observing and conducting four interviews with teachers at a preschool with a gender profile. In my analysis I have used Foucault's theories about discourse and power. The results show that the informants had a high awareness of gender and that the main strategies used were: an individual perspective, seeing the individual and not the sex, and a gender-neutral strategy, removing everything that is gendered, for example, in language and environment.

AimThe purpose with this work is to examen the conditions in Sweden, for beinge a girl and exercise a sport as icehockey. Icehockey seems to be a sport for men and were it still has deep manly traditions and Norms.MethodThe method I have used in this work is to do a questionnaire. I decided to send my questionnaire to 20 girl/womens icehockey team in Sweden. Outside from the questionnaire I took parallels from gender research and in sport history, to be able to answer the aim of the study.ResultsThe average age of the girles playing icehockey is 21 years and the everage years of playing icehockey is 7 years. Of 158 girls 149 said that they are not getting any financial suport from there home club.

In this report female farmers use of technical equipment is investigated. There is little research made on this subject in Sweden, therefore this report can be seen as an explorative study. Research makes it clear that machinery, throughout history and even today, has been seen as a male area. Heavy machines are often associated with the same attributes as masculinity. Force, power, efficiency and control are some examples.

 AbstractThis study is performed by studying seven livestock businesses in the agricultural sector. The focus of the essay has been put on the structures that limit and enable the lives of the farmers in this study. One of these major structures that affect everyday life is the gender structure and to this day the housewife role exists where the women are responsible for the home, family and domestic pets while the men are responsible for the production, machinery and the heavier tasks on the farm. This is grounded in the history and the development that agriculture has gone through, but also in the strong patriarchal power structure that exists in this industry. In this essay I also show how the life form analysis of Liselotte Jakobsen and the independent life form can not be fully applied to the farmer as he is not completely independent in his work.

The subject of this Master?s thesis is the process of change in a public library context, the implementation of the Stockholm City Library?s homepage Biblioteket.se. The aim is to examine the factors that influence this particular change and how they affect the process and extent of change in practice. The study designed as a qualitative case study is based primarily on document analysis, and supplemented by an interview. DiMaggio?s and Powell?s three mechanisms of change; coercive, mimetic and normative isomorphism, is applied.

This thesis is a discourse analysis of six rape trials, with the intention to analyze how the plaintiffs?? resistance is described. The overall aim is to investigate whether there are forms of resistance that the courts find more desirable and if there are any rules for how resistance should manifest itself. I will also investigate how the rape is itself described by the plaintiff and courts, respectively. I will analyze how this affects the understanding and attitude toward what has happened.

Denna studie baseras på kvalitativa semistrukturerade djupintervjuer med personer med olika fysiska funktionsnedsättningar om deras upplevelser och erfarenheter om funktionsnedsättningar, sexualitet och genusgörande. Kategorin funktionsförmåga är i många diskurser omarkerade. I det icke uttalade om kroppars olika förmågor förväntas och blir en funktionsfungerande kropp norm. Min studie grundar sig på ett teoretiskt samarbete där Robert McRuer?s cripteori utgör referenspunkten.

This paper analyzes the content of eight Islamic Friday-sermons, held at Chalmers Technical University in Gothenburg in spring 2010, organized by Chalmers Islamiska Förening (CIF) (Chalmers Islamic community).The forces of globalization, the accessibility of information and the Internet have given rise to discourses and movements that know no national boundaries. The accessibility of these global movements and discourses through media, Internet, etc., affect the way Muslims in Sweden interpret and practice their religion. Thus, this paper includes discussions and descriptions of global Islamic revivalist-movements, and relates the contents of the sermons at Chalmers to these movements. In the sermons, the imams often discuss the concept of a global Muslim community, the umma, and their perceptions of the prescribed ethics linked to this community. They often relate this discussion of ethics to frequently discussed issues in the West such as equality, justice and ethical standards in war.

The means that the Swedish State has to legitimize and standardize different perspectives of women and their sexuality is significant. Persecution of gender and sexuality is today something that can grant refugee status according to the Swedish Aliens Act. By studying the documents that forestall the amendment of the laws is it possible to unveil the concept and ideas about women sexuality that the state manifests and reproduces through these laws and official documents.The aim of this essay is to look upon the sexual policy as it occurs in official the documents that deal with lesbian refugees. The study cover and maps present research on this group of women and gives an answer to how Norms about women sexuality are expressed in these documents.Throughout the survey of the research field not much previous research was found, therefore even research that only partly covers the field is included and reviewed.As method a detailed reading of the official documents and a discourse analysis with it?s emphasize on theoretical themes like gender and sexuality, lesbianism and state feminism, was made.
