How can former military area I5 in Östersund, Sweden, evolve into Stadsdel Norr ("The Northern Quarter") ? an attractive part of the town center? In a theoretical part of the essay the significants of well functioning towns and streets are investigated. The history of Östersund and I5 is shortly reviewed. Present recommendations concerning city design are presented along with guidelines from Vägverket (National Road Administration) for urban streets. The conclusion reached is that a fundamental structure of streets and roads, public and private spaces, is crucial for the possible future development of an area.

This BSc thesis is an introductory step to the collaboration between the Swedish zoo Skansen and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). It constitutes of an inventory of the Nairobi Animal Orphanage (AO), a facility that cares for injured and abandoned wildlife species in Kenya. Through the cooperation with Skansen, the KWS will improve their management of the AO. The aim of the inventory and BSc theses is to evaluate the management of black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas), lion (Panthera leo) and patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas) regarding their biological needs. The general enclosures, routines and feeding at the AO are also evaluated since they have a great influence on the management of captive animals.

I denna studie undersöks hur parken Tantolunden på Södermalm i Stockholm förvaltas ur ett biodiversitetsperspektiv. Syftet är att undersöka hur Stockholms stadsdelsförvaltning hanterar grönområdet, beskriva dess förvaltningsmässiga planer och åtgärder, samt väga biodiversitetens betydelse gentemot andra intressen. Detta för att kunna koppla till Sveriges miljöarbete samt diskutera ifall parkområdet tillhandahåller en hög ekologisk status. En fältundersökning gjordes där tre inventerade naturytor på 100 kvm har studerats utifrån antalet växtarter, i koppling till ett större delområde där det söktes efter fyra utvalda biodiversitetsindikatorer. Dessa tre områden har benämnts som Berghällsområde, Traditionellt skött park samt Trädgårdsodlingsområde, efter hur de förvaltas.

This exam is about student?s perception of food and dietary advice. I illustrate food and eating from the youth's own perspective. The aim is to investigate how students perceive as "good" diet. It also reveals that students at the surveyed schools have poor knowledge of what is plate model.

The ability to tackle NP-hard problems has been greatly extended by the introduction of Metaheuristics (see Blum & Roli (2003)) for a summary of most Metaheuristics, general problem-independent optimisation algorithms extending the hill-climbing local search approach to escape local minima. One of these algorithms is Iterated Local Search (ILS) (Lourenco et al., 2002; Stützle, 1999a, p. 25ff), a recent easy to implement but powerful algorithm with results comparable or superior to other state-of-the-art methods for many combinatorial optimisation problems, among them the Traveling Salesman (TSP) and Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP). ILS iteratively samples local minima by modifying the current local minimum and restartinga local search porcedure on this modified solution. This thesis will show how ILS can be implemented for MSA.

The purpose of this study is to show how some Swedish teachers in the grades four to six assess the subject of English and what impact the national tests have on teachers? way of looking at assessments and grades and how teachers are supposed to work with assessment and grading according to the curriculum and the education act. The method of this study has been interviews with principals, teachers and pupils to get as many perspectives of the subject as possible. It has contributed to an interesting content and the end result will be as fundamental as it can be. The findings of this study show that teachers teaching English in Sweden have a great responsibility because of the lack of subject priority and communication between themselves, the government and other authorities in the world of education.

Construction accounts for about 35 percent of the total Swedish energy consumption and most of the energy is used by the large housing stock from the so-called ?Million program?. In the national action plan the government has put forward in energy efficiency. It is mentioned that existing buildings account for more than 90 percent of what is expected to be the housing stock within the coming 50 years. In order to meet environmental objectives its required that the existing stock be reviewed for energy efficiency. The goverment is now initiating a national framework with a budget of SEK 300 million Swedish crowns per year for five years, starting in 2010 to achieve the goal on energy efficient buildings. Energy efficiency of buildings in both new construction and above all within the existing stock are addressed.

Popular culture is a phenomenon of growing importance in the society today. Children and teenagers are increasingly using popular culture in their everyday life to reflect and answer questions about their identities and the meaning of life. Swedish primary and upper secondary schools are expected to prepare their students for adulthood and to provide them with tools to explain understand and problematize contemporary society. From this perspective it is relevant to question whether the schools achieve this and whether the instruction given there represents the contemporary society. For the purpose of knowing more about how popular culture is perceived and dealt with in the Swedish education system, this study examines how eight textbooks in Religious Education (RE) and the national curriculum for upper secondary school discuss and treat popular culture.  The study focuses on when and in what ways the textbooks mention popular culture and if the curriculum provides any supportive base for including popular culture in religious education.

Idén till detta arbete föddes relativt tidigt i min utbildning då jag upptäckte att växtutbildningen i landskapsingenjörsprogrammet är väldigt fokuserad på den södra halvan av Sverige. Eftersom jag kommer att vara yrkesverksam i norra delen av landet ville jag undersöka hur växtutbudet såg ut där uppe. Resultatet blev en inventeringsresa genom zonerna V-VIII där jag studerat vilka växtarter som används i parker och stadsmiljö, vilken växtzon de anses härdiga för och hur de utvecklats på platsen. I denna uppsats redovisar jag vad jag kommit fram till. Uppsatsen börjar med en inledning där bakgrunden till arbetet framgår samt hur jag burit mig åt vid inventeringen. Sedan följer en kort litteraturstudie som tar upp några begrepp jag anser viktiga att nämna inför den efterföljande resultatredovisningen och diskussionen. Zonerna och städerna jag inventerat redovisas var för sig i resultatredovisningen, där jag som avslutning har valt ut fyra arter som jag går in på lite mer i detalj eftersom jag anser dem intressanta för användning i norra Sveriges urbana miljö. I diskussionen och slutsatsen tar jag upp några saker som jag kommit fram till under resans gång, bl.a. att jag funnit förvånansvärt många arter i högre zoner än de anges härdiga för, samt frågeställningar som dykt upp och skulle behöva vidare utredning. Uppsatsen avslutas sedan med en övergripande tabell över de inventerade växterna..

The interactive whiteboard (IWB) is to be found in many classrooms in Sweden, and its number is growing rapidly. There is a lack of research of the use of the IWB in Sweden. The Swedish National Agency for Education refers to English research where the investment in the IWB in school is huge. In this study I will investigate how the IWB can be used as a mediating tool in the learning process. My study examines how interaction pattern appears when the teacher teaches with the IWB as a tool.

Due to a globalised world business travel is flourishing. This paper examines how middle level executives, travelling a lot in their work at a multi-national company, feel about their travel. It looks for links between business travel and work satisfaction among them. A short presentation of the patterns of business travel and relevant motivational and stress theories is given. Data for the paper is collected using a survey (78 participants) and interviews.

This study is about the perception of politics in social work. The aim of the study was to seehow people working with social work in municipalities describe their perception of how politicsaffect their work. The study was conducted in two municipalities in middle Sweden,which had a transfer of power in the 2006 election. Six people; two social workers, two executivedirectors and two politicians was interviewed about their perceptions about politics, ifthe ideological direction of the municipal matters, and how politics effect social work and theorganization. As analyze method organizational theory with focus on change and power wereused.
