Five story time providers were interviewed about the purpose of their story times, the methods they used and the content they chose. A model with four criteria was used to analyze the result of the interviews. Folkbibliotek en väg till integration

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how a public Library, as an information center and a meeting place, may contribute to bring Swedes and immigrants closer to one another, which is a prerequisite for integration. To realize this purpose, I have asked three questions. Which conditions and demands are stated in central documents for libraries immigrant activities? What do the Library called Biblioteket Västers multicultural activities contain? How does the Library conceive its object to strengthen immigrants identity so that its activities, contribute to integration? As method, I have used hermeneutics, which means that I have interpreted the thesis material. In the theory I have described relevant literature and confirmed the importance of identity, language and the majoritys acknowledgement for integration.

Digitalisering av biblioteksmaterial : En kvalitativ undersökning av åtta biblioteksanställdas attitydertill digitalisering

This study aims to examine the views on digitization of eight respondents, all working at different Libraryinstitutions in Sweden, and how their views are reflected in their Library's digitization strategies. The poll wasconducted on the basis of Ingrid Mason's theory of information standards, their structure and sociopoliticalnature. The informantion standards are divided into three aspects, curatorial, semantic and technical, and theyaffect selection of, intellectual and physical access to the digitized material, which in the end is what constitutes the digital cultural heritage. The background to the study is that the Swedish Library institutions in the current situation lacks a nationalstandard or a common strategy for the digitization of cultural heritage, while it is still implemented digitizationprojects at many Library institutions. The method used is qualitative, structured interviews with open-ended questions. The study shows that one of the main motives behind the libraries' digitization projects is to make Librarymaterials available in a new way, creating greater opportunities for the users to take advantage of the material. The Library users are the ones who mainly control what is digitized, although aspects of preservation ismentioned. Furthermore, it appears that the respondents believe that digitization offers improved capabilities tosearch and learn more about the collections, but the actual work of image capture, the addition of metadata, presentation to users and long-term preservation is very complex.Views on what it is to be digitized, how the material should be selected and provided with metadata and howit should be presented to users is what creates the standards that libraries use when they digitize their materials, and digitization of Library materials creates new conditions for new users to access and use Library material. This is a two years master?s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies..

Högskolestudenters biblioteksanvändande: En intervjuundersökning av några storanvändare

The purpose of this master?s thesis is to examine how some university students, who are using the libraries extensively, use and experience the public and the university Library and what they expect from the two different Library types. I also compare their expectations with the different tasks and aims of the two Library types. To answer this I have interviewed seven students at the department of history of literature at Göteborg University. I have also studied some literature and research related to this subject, for example user studies about students and libraries and the information behaviour of distance students.

Integrationspolitik i praktiken : En utvärderande fallstudie av Storstadssatsningen på Bergsjöns bibliotek

The purpose of this Master thesis is to increase the knowledge about how public libraries can contribute to fulfil political programmes aimed towards integration. To achieve this we have conducted an evaluative case study about a public Library in Sweden and the activities they carried out within the framework of the metropolitan policy programme Storstadssatsningen?. The questions raised consider which the political aims for integration within this programme were, which activities the Library did accomplish, what the result in comparison with the politically decided aims was, and what conclusions can possibly be drawn from this? The theoretical framework consists of theories regarding evaluation, political programmes, integration and segregation, and public Library-activities.

KOM LOSS En studie av Läs- och skrivstugans verksamhet på tre bibliotek i Västra Götalandregionen

The purpose of this Master Thesis is to investigate whether the technical service available in the "Reading and Writing Corner" has an influence on the total quality of service in a public Library. This service is intended to give sensory/print-handicapped persons access to information. The title KOM LOSS is a Swedish expression for "come on" and LOSS is short for reading and writing support. Internetetik på bibliotek

The aim of this issue is to study how Swedish public libraries deal with the principles of freedom of speech and freedom of information in connection with public use of the Internet. The authors intention has been to find out whether the public use of the Internet has caused ethical problems for Library workers and how the libraries solve situations when they consider their principles violated by Library users. The authors study the debate on the issue in a couple of Swedish Library magazines published during the late 1990s and they also give a few examples from the USA during the same period. They study the ethical principles and directives for schools published by the Swedish Board of Education as they claim that many of the public Library users are students who bring along their ethical conceptions and thereby affect the ethical climate of the libraries. In their study the authors refer to ethical rules given to librarians by their trade union DIK and to the conclusions drawn from the hearing Good Ethics on the Net held by the Swedish IT Commission in 1998.

Rum för musik på biblioteket: En fallstudie av Bibliotek 10 i Helsingfors

The aim of this master's thesis is to study how the design of the music Library space affects how it is used and its role as an arena for culture. This is done in form of a case study of Library 10 in Helsinki, a public Library branch that specializes in music and information technology. The backdrop to the study is the changing context for cultural activity in the information society and the role of public libraries as public space and meeting place. By analyzing the distribution of space in the Library, the distribution of functions and artefacts and the spatial use of the room, I interpret the ways in which this distributional logic produces a unique place for music and culture. I discuss the music Library design in a space and place perspective, utilizing theoretical tools from cultural geography and the space theories of Henri Lefebvre.

En mötesplats med utsikt och ett öppet rum för insikt : En studie av folkbiblioteksarkitektur och synen på folkbiblioteksrummet - Exemplen Lomma bibliotek och Halmstads stadsbibliotek

A second aspect is Yi-Fu Tuans concepts of Space and Place.

Digital service erbjuden till användare med funktionsnedsättning på Armeniens national bibliotek: utmaningar och åtgärder.

The purpose of the present qualitative study is to create knowledge about Librarydigital services and their marketing to patrons with disabilities in Armenia, on theexample of the National Library of Armenia, as well as, to discover opinions of theNLA librarians and patrons with disabilities about the importance of Library digitalservices to people with disabilities. Literature review and qualitative interviewing has been employed as methods to collect the empirical data. The results have been analyzed and discussed based on the Library-marketing model of marketing research, marketing segmentation, marketing mix strategy and marketing evaluation suggested by Koontz & Gubbin (2010). It has been concluded, that 1) e-accessibility issomething new at the NLA and the NLA does not provide equally available knowledge, resources, services, facilities to patrons with disabilities, because of the following main challenges: lack of continuous funding and support from the state, lack of appropriate facilities and technologies, lack of qualified staff, and historicallyinherited Library infrastructure impediments; 2) no Library service marketing is conducted to patrons with disabilities at the NLA; 3) the opinions are that provisionwith such services is very important to people with disabilities, since they allow those people to gain access and use information in formats adopted to their various needs, and, of course, they become integrated into the modern society. The important role of a Library as a non-discriminator and copyright protector in a developing country when delivering digital Library services to patrons with disabilities has also been discovered..

Referensgrupper för ungdomar på folkbibliotek en bra idé?

The aim of this master thesis is to find out if young people and librarians think that reference groups can support public libraries to meet the needs of young people, and if the reference groups, which the librarians describe, differentiates from the young peoples requirements. I have made a qualitative study with a questionnaire to six librarians who have experience from reference groups and ten interviews with teenagers. The result showed that young people have many interests and needs which can be met from the Library. The teenagers were positive to the Library and many of them showed interest in having more influence on the Library. Many would like to join a reference group, but on the condition that they would be offered real influence.
