The aim of this master thesis is to examine the identity of Librarians. We have done this by conducting a text analysis where we have analysed texts produced by DIK, the major union of Librarians, and by Library and Information Science departments in Sweden. The material we have analysed is texts produced in the aim of introducing and marketing the Librarian occupation and education. The aim of this study is to find out how the identity of the Librarian is expressed in this material. We have conducted the text analysis by adopting the critical discourse analyst Norman Fairclough´s theories.

The aim of this master thesis is to study the relationship between general ethics and professional ethics, to attain an understanding of which values that are given priority in the profession of the Librarian regarding personal encounter towards library users. The posed questions are: How can fundamental ethical principles be understood through the view of public Librarians? How can policy documents regarding Librarian ethics be understood through the view of public Librarians? How can policy documents regarding Librarian ethics be problematized in relation to fundamental ethical principles? We used four focus groups consisting of public Librarians. Three theoretical frameworks create the base of the analysis; four fundamental ethical principles, ethical guidelines for Swedish Librarians and recommendations for Swedish Librarians in the reference service. Three main issues emerge in the study; equalistic personal encounter where the principle of justice is emphasized but also problematized, library users? integrity which mainly coincide with the principle of autonomy and finally the Librarian?s professional role which are being defined by Librarian specific competence to refrain violation of the principle of injury avoidance.
Fokus på folkbibliotekarien ett arbetslivsperspektiv
The purpose of this Master thesis is to illustrate the public Librarian. People in general, including library users and leading personalities in the field of culture in the communities do not know the tasks of the public Librarian. We presume that the vague picture of duties of the public Librarian might cause problems. In this dissertation we mean to examine only public Librarians, hereby we exclude for example, university- and company Librarians. The sentences of this thesis are: How are the public Librarians viewed, in meaning of, tasks, role/-s, comptetence/-s, status and image? And can we call it a "profession" in the classical sense? We answer these questions by using relevant literature, interviews and conference paper.
"Hur lättpåverkade är ni tjejer egentligen?" - En uppsats om skam, hår och sexualitet
The study is based on three Swedish novels published in 1945,1956 and 1964, and three Swedish novels published in 1998, 2008and 2009. The aim has been to investigate how Librarians are portrayed in Swedish literature, as well as a comparison between the older and the newer literature. What Librarian images are portrayed in the analyzed literature? Is the portrayal mostly positive, negative or neutral? Are there any clear differences in how Librarians portrayed in newer and older Swedish fiction? If so, what are they? The method used has been qualitative content analysis where relevant paragraphs have been coded and divided them into categories of appearance, personality, and professional identity. The conclusion is that the Librarian is often portrayed as an intellectual and somewhat high-strung bibliophile.
This thesis is about language planning in Faeroese libraries as seen from the countrys specific situation, with Faeroese as a mothers tongue, but with great dominance of the Danish language within media. The purpose of my thesis is to examine language planning activities within the library, and the consequences this planning has for the system. Different theories about language planning provides a framework for my model of the library as a linguistic eco-system with actors performing status planning, represented by the government with its influence in cultural politics, the Librarian with his or her library tasks and the user with his or her needs. The thesis has a qualitative attempt, and the empirical material consists of different documents about the country and materials from interviews made with seven qualified Librarians, employed within general libraries in the Faeroe Islands. The analysis shows that the Librarian in different ways promotes the Faeroese language within library activities, and because of the attention paid to the user in the public library he/she influences the Librarians planning.

The aim of this Master's thesis is to examine the contemporary educational tasks of the Swedish public library as they manifest in Swedish library journals. Our main question at issue is: Which educational discourses are there? And in relation to our main question: how do the concepts of information literacy, lifelong learning and adult education relate to each other? Is there an antagonism between the public library's duty to supply fiction as opposed to non-fiction? and: What are the consequences of these discourses in the service provided by the library? Our theoretical starting-point is the discourse theory as proposed by Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe. We analyse 39 texts from four Swedish library journals: Ikoner, bis, DIK-forum and Biblioteksbladet. The analysis is done in two phases.

Resource-based learning or problem-oriented learning are teaching methods that are becoming more and more common in schools today. In order to make these teaching methods work there is a demand to make students information literate. This entails that school Librarians ought to play a more important role in teaching than before since they are the ones that are the most qualified when it comes to mediating information skills. The aim of this thesis is to find out how nine teachers at six senior high schools apprehend the professional role of the school Librarian and how they apprehend the conception of information literacy In order to learn about these conceptions we have chosen to study to what extent collaboration exists in the schools in question and the teachers conceptions of the importance of the school Librarian in this context. We have used phenomenography which is both a set of theoretical assumptions and a methodology.
