Acrylamide (AM) is a commonly used monomer in the manufacture of polyacrylamide. In addition, AM has been found in heated foods that are rich in starch. The main dietary sources in Sweden tend to be crisps, French fries, fried potatoes, crisp bread, cookies and coffee. Un-fortunately, dietary intake of AM has in several studies been shown to cause cancer in ro-dents. Consequently, the compound is currently regarded as a potential carcinogen in hu-mans.

Ledinflammation är ett vanligt problem som orsakar smärta och nedsatt användbarhet hos häst. Intraartikulär behandling med glukokortikoider anses vara ett effektivt sätt att komma tillrätta med smärtan och inflammationen. Vid behandling av ledinflammation är det även önskvärt att främja ledbroskets funktion och det råder delade meningar kring vad glukokortikoider har för effekt på ledbrosk. Det finns tre föreningar (betametasonacetat/ betametasondinatriumfosfat, triamcinolonacetonid och metylprednisolonacetat) som är vanliga vid intraartikulär behandling av ledinflammation med glukokortikoider hos häst i Sverige. Litteraturstudiens syfte var att utvärdera huruvida det finns skadliga effekter på ledbrosk av dessa glukokortikoider i rekommenderade doser och i sådana fall om effekterna skiljer sig åt mellan föreningarna.Betametasonacetat/betametasondinatriumfosfat har ej visats påverka brosket negativt om det administreras i inflammerad led, även om de använda doserna överstiger de rekommenderade något.

En komplikation efter öppen prostatektomi vid prostatacancer är erektil dysfunktion. En vanlig reaktion vid förlust av potens är skuldkänsla, nedstämdhet och nedsatt känsla av manlighet. Männen upplever därmed att deras hälsa och livskvalitet påverkas negativt. Syftet med denna allmänna litteraturstudie var att belysa mäns upplevelse av erektil dysfunktion efter öppen prostatektomi vid prostatacancer. Nio artiklar valdes ut för granskning.

Encephalitozoon cuniculi är en obligat intracellulär parasit som orsakar sjukdomen encephalitozoonos hos kaniner. Infektion kan även ses hos människor och parasiten är därmed zoonotisk. E.cuniculi-infektion sker via intag eller inhalation av sporer, överföring in utero eller okulär överföring. Predilektionsställen för parasiten är centrala nervsystemet, njurar eller linsen. E.cuniculi är en vanlig parasit hos kaniner men den exakta förekomsten i Sverige är okänd. Att diagnostisera E.cuniculi-infektion hos kaniner är viktigt för korrekt prognos och behandling samt på grund av parasitens zoonotiska potential.

Clinicians in veterinary practice have responsibilities for the development of global antibiotic resistance. In some cases, antibiotics are contraindicated or even useless in wound treatments and therefore other options are needed. Antiseptics may be another option but their use are controversial and may be questioned by owners. As professionals, it may be very difficult to be able to motivate this choice of treatment. The aim of this paper is to gain knowledge about four antiseptics; iodine, silver, polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) and honey to make it easier for veterinary nurses and other clinicians in veterinary practices to decide their potential use. The assessment will be made with consideration of the available evidence concerning the properties, usability and the animal?s experience. The results showed a lack of evidence in in-vivo studies in horses, particularly studies within the field of veterinary nursing.

SAMMANFATTNING Läkemedelsresistens är ett växande globalt problem. Inte minst bland parasiter hos våra djur har rapporter om utebliven effekt av läkemedel ökat. Pålitliga detektionsmetoder av anthelmintikaresistens hos nematoder är viktig så att åtgärder sätts in i ett tidigt skede för att djurvälfärd och produktion ej försämras. Detta kräver standardiserade och beprövade detektionsmetoder. De metoder som används idag för flertalet nematoder är ursprungligen framtagna och anpassade för strongylider hos får.

This literature study aims to examine the existence of cancer stem cells in breast cancer. The cancer stem cell theory states that there is a hierarchical organization within a tumour, in which a small subpopulation of the cells can initiate new tumours and maintain tumour growth whilst the bulk of the tumour cannot. These tumour initiating cells have shown to possess many characteristics similar to those of adult stem cells, which is why they are often referred to as cancer stem cells. Both cell types have the capacity of asymmetric division and have shown to possess mechanisms of resistance to both apoptosis and cancer drugs. The cancer stem cell theory elucidates many biological aspects such as the heterogeneity of tumours and the relapse of many cancers after what appeared to be successful treatments.

The principal questions that are high lightened in this study are: How is the discrimination of the Indigenous people in Latin-America represented in the works of Jose María Arguedas and Miguel Angel Asturias? How are these two authors interrelated in terms of the defense of a cultural belonging? And finally, can these be associated to Paulo Coelho?s narrative content and techniques?This work shows how, as Nelson Gonzalez-Ortega names it, a narrative discourse of resistance (based on the consequences of the cultural merging of the European and Latin-American people) is expressed and transformed into modern literature. It shows how the works of these authors protect and transmit the interests and the cultural origins of the Latin-American Indigenous people. These origins are expressed by language, myths, storytelling techniques and the presentation of an alternative perspective of the world. It also shows, through analysis of their writing, how some of these authors as dual cultural human beings struggled to balance the two cultural elements they are constituted of.Focus will be on Asturias Hombrez de Maiz, Arguedas Los ríos profundos and Coelhos 11 minutos and El Zahir..

The female dog has a unique reproductive endocrinology, with high levels of progesterone throughout the 70-day long luteal phase. In this project, markers of glucose metabolism were studied and compared from the aspects of breed group and time in oestral cycle. The parameters studied were: glucose, insulin, progesterone, fructosamine and the newly introduced analysis of HbA1c. Hba1c was also further evaluated and discussed as a diagnostic tool in canine medicine.No differences in terms of glucose markers were found between a group of purebreed dogs of various breeds compared to a group of dogs with high risk of dioestrus diabetes, namely the Norwegian and Swedish elkhounds.No differences were found between the two sample occasions, anoestrus and dioestrus, concluding that there is no need for relating test results to the time of the oestrous cycle in middle-aged intact female dogs.There were statistically significant higher values of all glucose markers in diabetic dogs than in non-diabetic dogs. When it came to HbA1c, however, there was a larger overlap between the two groups, compared to fructosamine.

Hos framförallt galopphästar är skador på den ytliga böjsenan vanligt förekommande. Den ytliga böjsenan är en energibevarande elastisk struktur som utsätts för stor mekanisk belastning vid hög fart. För att klara av detta behöver den vara både stark och elastisk, egenskaper som står i konflikt med varandra. En starkare sena får sämre elastiska egenskaper vilket gör energiåtgången större. Säkerhetsmarginalen för vad senan utsätts för in vivo och maximalt klarar av in vitro tycks vara liten, något som delvis kan förklara den höga skadefrekvensen.Patogenesen är inte helt klarlagd men ruptur av den ytliga böjsenan verkar föregås av degeneration.

Glycerol is essential for the lipid metabolism of both plants and animals. Glycerol is formed in the rumen by hydrolysis of lipids from the feed. Glycerol is also a by-product from the production of biodiesel from rapeseed oil and other fat sources. Glycerol might be used as a dietary glucose precursor for dairy cows in similar ways as propylene glycol. Due to increased production of biodiesel more glycerol has been available to a lower price.

The aim of this study is to evaluate an alternative projection of the Medial Coronoid Process (MCP) of the canine elbow joint. The projection (Di35M-PrLO) was, to my knowledge, first mentioned in an article by Haudiquet et al in 2002. In that article the projection was tested in vitro, and a good sensitivity was showed for the Medial Coronoid Process. The projection might be helpful in cases of suspected Fragmented Coronoid Process (FCP) . This study is divided into three parts. The first part is an in-vivo test of the projection, including technique and subjective evaluation of the outlining of the MCP.

Penicillin G (benzylpenicillin) is the most commonly used antimicrobial substance used in equine medicine today. Two forms of penicillin G are available for equine use; one form is the poorly soluble penicillin G procaine and the other is the very soluble sodium salt. Although penicillin has a wide safety margin and is considered to possess a good tolerance, reactions due to side effects are sometimes encountered, which commonly is named ?penicillin-shock?. The etiology behind penicillin shock in horses is not completely understood, but the most common reason is believed to be procaine toxicity.

Felin infektiös peritonit (FIP) är en dödlig sjukdom hos katter som orsakas av felint coronavirus (FCoV). Sjukdomen är ett stort problem inom veterinärmedicinen då det i dagsläget inte finns någon effektiv behandling. Detta gör att det är en fruktad sjukdom, både för katterna som drabbas och djurägare såväl som för veterinärer som inte kan göra något mer än att konstatera en diagnos, vilket så gott som alltid innebär en negativ prognos. Denna litteraturstudie tar upp det senaste inom forskningen för behandling av FIP för att ge en inblick i framtidens potentiella möjligheter för att kunna bota sjukdomen. De behandlingar som tas upp är polyprenyl immunostimulant, cathepsin B-inhibitorer och proteasinhibitorer riktade mot 3CL-proteaser, antikroppar mot felint TNF-alfa, en studie som visar att det sker en minskning av antalet NK-celler och regulatoriska T-celler hos FIP-katter, chloroquine samt Galanthus nivalis agglutinin och nelfinavir. Dessa olika studier innefattar in vitro- såväl som in vivo-försök, antivirala aspekter såväl som nya fakta angående immunförsvaret hos FIPinfekterade katter. Anledningen till varför det ännu inte finns ett bra botemedel är mycket på grund av den komplexa patogenesen kring sjukdomen där stora kunskapsluckor finns, som i sin tur leder till en ineffektiv och sen diagnostik. Slutsatsen av uppsatsen ger inget tydligt svar på hur man kan behandla FIP, men ger en inblick i vad som förhoppningsvis kan förväntas i framtiden.

ABSTRACT. Mastitis is one of the most common diseases affecting dairy cows worldwide. In Sweden annu-ally about 60% of the dairy cows get infected and Staphylococcus aureus cause approximately 30% of these infections. Mastitis causes enormous economic losses. In Sweden, the costs to cure mastitis are estimated to be 192 million SEK per year, excluding the costs for mastitis prevention.
