This final thesis is performed on commission of Torsby Forestry administration, Stora Enso Skog. Stora Enso Skog is one of the major Forestry companies of Sweden. The main business area is located in and around the region of Bergslagen.
During the last decade the practice of forest management has rapidly changed due to a new forest legislation. The new law has resulted in that the production goal is equal to the environmental goal within Forestry.
During the last 100-200 years people have change their way of living and the condition and need for survival is no longer depending on the agricultural work. The Forestry has replaced the farming and a lot of the natural pastural have been lost.
Wessmantorp in the north part of Skåne is an old place for Forestry and farming where people have been living for several hundred years. Studies of selected parts of the everyday landscape, that earlier have been settlement with small crofter?s holding, show that the changes in the landscape mostly depends on the human factor and that a lot of the cultivable soil have been replaced with spruce. Some of the areas, which the earlier dwellings were placed, still contain some remains of old house foundations and stone fences and can regard as being of an historical value.
The studies provide the reader with a short background, the place as it is today and the changes of the land use in Wessmantorp.
Att prognostisera avverkningspotentialen i privatskogsbruket
For the actors in the Swedish forest industry, it is important to have the ability to forecast the state in the privateforests. The information that comes out of the forecasts will be the base for the activities strategic direction. The aim in this exam is to survey what information that is present today as basis for forecast calculation, andeven to examine what other possibilities it might have in the future. From a limited geography and out of different time perspective forecast the felling potential in the privateForestry. With the word felling potential means regeneration felling and thinning. The exam will answer the questions:What information is needed to build a relevant forecast model? Is this information available today? Is there information to buy that would improve the forecast model? The result of this exam will be presented in form of a ”case study” showing the opportunities in the market tocreate a forecast calculation of felling potential in the private Forestry within the Forest Owners’ AssociationMellanskogs wood-area Dalarna..
The municipal forests of Sala cover an area of 6 000 hectares, starting in the vicinity of the city and reaching north. At the same time as residents make abundant use of the areas closest to the community for outdoor activities and recreational purposes, the forest is of great economic value and also worth protecting for environmental reasons. These conditions make Forestry in periurban woods more complex than conventional Forestry, why a good understanding of the needs and demands on the forest and silviculture program is required. The purpose of this study is to depict the usage of the forests owned by the municipality of Sala, to set forth the common view of the silviculture program implemented by the municipality and to chart the expectations the community has on the forests and Forestry of the future in the municipality of Sala.
The survey part of this paper consists of the interviews of thirteen individuals representing nine interest groups. As expected the views of these individuals varied widely but some results were expressed by more or less all of them.
Data retrieved from airborne laser scanning represents a new source of forest data. Today, the technology has matured so that it can function in an operational environment. The aim of this study was to compile areas of application of laserdata in Forestry. Moreover to analyze costs and accessibility of laserdata. The goal was to provide private forest owners information to support assessments of possible benefits of laserdata.
Har antalet naturvärdesträd i Sverige förändrats mellan 1999-2009?
Forestry and forest products are vital components of the Swedish economy but the forest is also important for recreation, hunting, out-door life and conserving biodiversity. The Swedish Forest Act has two equally important objectives, production and environmental protection. Polytax is the Swedish Forest Agency´s inventory programme which monitors progress toward the two objectives in connection with regeneration fellings. It includes data on environmental protection measures taken in connection with regeneration fellings. 30 § of the Swedish Forestry Act and related regulations specify the demands for conserva-tion of nature.
Vallentuna municipality in Stockholm County, is planning to develop a management plan for a forest area owned by the municipality. The property is an urban forest and the hiking trail Roslagsleden runs through it. Hence the municipality intends to take extra care of the outdoor recreation interests, as well as forest biodiversity, but at the same time use the area for Forestry. This study discusses how these three interests, recreation, biodiversity and Forestry, differ in their views of how a forest should be managed, where they disagree and how they can coexist in the management of this area. In this study, a vegetation mapping of the area and an assessment of the forest?s conservation values was carried out.
Södras gröna skogsbruksplaner ur ett landskapsperspektiv :
The aim of the "Green forest management plans" is to help forest owners to reach the
environmental goal of the Forestry act. But are they able to do that? Is it possible to plan preservation of species on single estates? How do single-estate-plans differ from a landscape analysis and how can the landscape approach be used in operative planning? This work was initiated to give an answer to these questions.
This study was made in a landscape of 4200 ha in Östergötland county, south-eastern Sweden. A lanscape analysis was made and then compared to the Green forest management plans in the same area. The nature conservation areas (areas that were set aside to be managed with environmenatl goals) differed quite a lot between the two alternatives.
Skötselmetoder för bestånd med produktions- och naturvårdsmål :
This study is made on assignment by the local board of Forestry in Skåne,
Blekinge and Halland.
The change of the forest law 1994 brought a new type of management plan.
A more active planning was introduced in order to equate the environment goal
with the production goal. The purpose with this study is to give a better picture of
how planning for nature conservation in production forest is made and to develop
support for selection of silviculture methods for stands with combined goals. With
combined goals means production Forestry with a reinforced consideration to both
nature and culture, called PF-classified stands. This was done by:
? Describing silviculture models from the literature that are possible to use
for stands with combined goals.
? Describing silviculture models that is used in practice in stands with
combined goals.
? Describing how the classification of stands with combined goals is used.
Which means, were in the terrain, with which frequency and in which type
of forest PF-classification is used.
? Comparing differences and similarities of theoretical and practical used
models.
The study was done partly as a literature study and partly as an interview study of
forest planners.
Trakthyggesfria skogsbrukssätt : kunskap, förutsättningar och attityder
Forestry has three main aspects to take into consideration today; economical, ecological and socio-cultural. In order to reach the broad policy goals for sustainable forest management, an increased variety of management approaches are requested. Today clear-cutting is the only method used in 96 % of the managed forests in Sweden. The Swedish National Board of Forestry has therefore initiated a project in order to investigate and develop Continuous Cover Forestry (CFF). This study is a part of this project.
Skogsbruksplanens betydelse för aktiviteten hos privata skogsägare i Älvdalen :
The purpose of Älvdalens besparingsskog is to develop the district and most of all the Forestry in Älvdalen. It's owned by about 2 300 private forest owners who's landed properties are located in Älvdalen. Every year the besparingsskogen gives out a lot of its profit in form different types of subsidies for agriculture and Forestry. The owners can apply for subsidies for several of the costs that occur in Forestry. During the period 2000-2003 the owners are offered forest management plans and pcSKOG-gård at no cost for their private forest properties.
The purpose of this master's thesis was to find out if the activity in the Forestry changed when the forest owners got new forest management plans and the computer program pcSKOG-gård.
This degree projects made on behalf of AB Karl Hedin to find out what private forest estate owners would like to have on a Forestry-related website. The reason for finding out what estate owners think of the forest websites is to meet needs of the forest owners who are customers of AB Karl Hedin. Marketing and use of the Internet for information search for products and services are two key concepts in this study. To be able to perform the study, a telephone survey was made to find out what estate owners want and what they are missing on a forest site. The survey can be summarized at following conclusion:
The marketing of AB Karl Hedin website must be stronger The forest owners want more information on forest business, prices and Forestry services.
The influence of forestry stands treatments on brown bears (Ursus arctos) habitat selection in Sweden ? an option for Alberta forestry?
The brown bear population in Alberta, Canada has been decreasing, while the Swedish has been increasing and all the affecting parameters are not known. This study examined the difference in these populations to see if an explanation could be found in differences between the forest management. The aim of the paper was to see if stand treatments had an influence of brown bears habitat selection in autumn in Sweden and how the results can be used in Alberta. This was done by analyzing bear positions in Sweden with forest data, and comparing forest management data for the study area in Sweden with forest management data for Alberta. The results displayed that mature forests over 60 years that have been commercially thinned are selected by bears rather than forests over 60 years that have not been commercially thinned in.
Marknadsundersökning av Södra skogsägarnas medlemmar inom Gislaveds verksamhetsområde
This study is done on behalf of Södra skogsägarna in the autumn of 2012. The main purpose of the study is to get an explanation to why some of the members are passive in their Forestry, and how Södra can stimulate them to become more active. To achieve this a questionnaire study was conducted on the members of Södra in the community of Gislaved.
The result of the study shows that there are many different factors that influence whether the forest owner is active or not. Examples of those factors are timber prices, the forest owner's objectives and the forest owner's financial situation. The main goal for the forest owners in the survey was to obtain high economic result and to increase the standing timber volume for the next generation.
