The aim of this master's thesis is to study what attitude public libraries in Sweden show towards video games. By using critical discourse analysis as both theory and method we analyse several texts emerging from a debate mainly discussed in blogs. Main topics in the debate are video games in the library, the purpose of the public library and Library 2.0. Our analysis focus on views expressed concerning the work and purpose of the public library, the librarian and the library user - and to identify the main visible discourses in the discussion.Our findings consist of two discourses representing two different views in the debate. We call these two discourses the general educational discourse and the interactive discourse.

The aim of this Master?s thesis is to study various views of sponsorship in relation to public libraries as found within three cultural policy documents. The main objective is to discover which ideas are considered relevant in the partnership between the Swedish retail chain, Åhléns, and the children?s public library, ?Room for Children? (Rum för Barn). In 2005, Åhléns provided SEK3.14 million in sponsorship to ?Room for Children? at Kulturhuset in Stockholm.

Det finns drygt 300 professionella förlag i Sverige med regelbunden utgivning. I Litteraturutredningen 2012 slås fast att både koncentrationen och integrationen har ökat på den svenska bokmarknaden under de senaste åren och den största aktören på bokmarknaden är Bonnierförlagen. Jättens monopolliknande ställning på bokmarknaden ger emellanåt upphov till en samhällsdebatt. Bonnierkritiker menar att Bonnierförlagens utgivning är begränsad till säkra storsäljare, vilket är ett hot mot mångfald och det fria ordet. Dessutom har Bonnier större möjlighet till marknadsföring jämfört med mindre förlag vilket i förlängningen gör att Bonnierböcker efterfrågas i större utsträckning.Ett intressant spörsmål är varför Folkbiblioteken inte är involverade i denna debatt.

The subject of this thesis is the position of the story or activity rooms at the main libraries in Skåne, a province in the south of Sweden. The questions that are asked and answered are: Which of the main libraries has a story room? What do the rooms look like? How are the rooms used? Which is the relation between the form and the function of the rooms? and, finally, How do the libraries themselves present and describe their story rooms?.

The aim of this study is to investigate methods of collection development, the users? influence on selection and quality aspects, focusing on non-fiction literature in Swedish public libraries. To find out opinions of collection development, I use the method comparative literature study. Antonio Gramsci?s concept hegemony forms the theoretical background, and hegemony as concept is related to a library context by using Maj Klasson?s text on the librarians? different positions of authorities.

The purpose of our research was to examine whether the acceptance and diffusion of RFID technology among the employees at public libraries in Sweden, follow the classic diffusion of innovation model. RFID or Radio Frequency Identification, is a technology that uses radio frequency and microchip technology to track items, in our case, library books and other library materials. Diffusion is the process by which, in our case, the RFID technology is adopted by the library staff. The purpose of this study was to examine what factors influenced the acceptance and adoption of RFID among the library staff. We used Everett Rogers' Diffusion of innovation theory as our framework.

Title: Development and continuity: A new institutional case study of a Danish public library in changeAbstract: The purpose of this master's thesis is to discuss and analyse the relationship between the traditional core values belonging to the institution of the public library, and the development work that takes place at the institution. The thesis also investigates the relationships that influence the development work.By investigating a library that is considered progressive in its development work, our purpose is also to unveil alternative values that compete with the traditional core values. By illustrating the perception among seven staff members and the director at Aarhus Public Libraries, we want to illuminate the terms for development among public libraries. In addition to our interviews, an activity plan is studied.We base our study on new institutional theory which focuses on norms and values in an organisation. This focus helps us to understand the development work from a comprehensive view.Our study shows that the development work at Aarhus Public Libraries is taking place in a complex environment that consists of several different actors and different interpretationsof the traditional core values of public libraries.

This thesis investigates all aspects of quality and evaluation issues concerning collections of Internet links in public libraries today and in the future. We have studied central theories concerning quality in general as well as quality aspects regarding the Internet and Internet links. In addition to this we have made three case-studies involving the development of collections of Internet links in public libraries of different sizes. The case-studies were made as interviews with professionals responsible for selection, quality assurance and evaluation of electronic information for inclusion in the libraries collections of Internet links. In addition to this we made an e-mail interview with a librarian responsible for one of the most advanced collections of Internet links among Swedish´ public libraries.

This master thesis aims to examine how public libraries in Sweden are practically and ideologically equipped to deal with e-books, outside of the dominant distributor Elib. The study also aims to find out what?s required of the book market and the public libraries to make further progress in the question of e-books. In Sweden e-books are still representing only a small amount of all the library loans and an even smaller amount of the commercial book market.The methodological and theoretical ground for the thesis is Grounded Theory, and the survey is based on interviews with publishers, librarians and distributors.The conclusions of this thesis are that the public libraries lack resources to invest in e-books, and that they also lack in knowledge about the media and its readers. It also exposes that both internal and external collaboration efforts need to be further developed.

The aim of this Bachelor thesis is to analyse how the libraries in the district of Tranemo was affected by the fusion of municipalities between 1952 and 1974, when 13 municipalities was merged into one. My major findings are that one of the libraries became the main library and libraries of the other villages became branch libraries. The main library could increase its quality by employ an educated librarian and move to a place that was more adapted to its purpose. The library loans increased. This course of events seems to be common for what happened to Swedish libraries when there were a lot of fusions of municipalities these years..

Varför ökar antalet besök på Folkbiblioteken medan antalet lån minskar? Syftet med den här undersökningen är att studera vad besökarna gör på Luleå Folkbiblioteks huvudbibliotek och hur de betraktar sitt bibliotek. Frågeställningarna är: ? Vad gör besökarna på biblioteket förutom att låna böcker, tidningar och AV-medier? ? Hur betraktar besökarna på Luleå Folkbibliotek sitt bibliotek? ? Vilka är det som besöker biblioteket? ? Hur är miljön på biblioteket och vilken inverkan har den på biblioteksbesökarna? ? Är biblioteket också en plats som lockar till sig andra besökare än de som söker det som förknippas med biblioteksverksamhet? För att kunna besvara frågeställningarna har en observationsundersökning och en enkätundersökning gjorts. I analysen har några begrepp från Bourdieu använts.

Denna processundersökning på kandidatnivå beskriver inköpsprocessen och exponeringen av manga vid Umeås filialbibliotek. Undersökningens syfte var att genom enkät- och fältundersökningar beskriva inköpsprocess, exponering och förmedlingen av manga för att kunna presentera nya förslag för placering, märkning och förmedling av manga vid Umeås filialbibliotek.Undersökningen utgick ifrån följande frågeställningar:Var finner biblioteken information kring aktuell manga för inköp? Vad påverkar vilken manga som köps in?Hur ser katalogisering och uppdelningen av manga ut och hur går katalogisering av manga till vid Umeås filialbibliotek?Hur ser bibliotekens utbud och exponering av manga ut? Finns det eller har det funnits någon plan för förmedling och exponering av manga vid Umeås filialbibliotek? Finns det ett behov av mer förmedling av manga idag? Vad har tidigare och vad påverkar idag exponeringen och förmedlingen av manga vid Umeås filialbibliotek?Undersökningen presenterar en kort översikt över mangans- och de västerländska tecknade seriernas delade historia, mangans plats på de svenska filialbiblioteken idag och tidigare relevant forskning. I den tidigare forskningen presenteras moralpanik, populärkultur och skräplitteratur som en anledning till de fördomar som påverkar förmedlingen av manga idag och jämförs med Frankrikes starka seriekultur och marknad för manga.För att undersöka inköpsprocess, förmedling och exponering utfördes 17 enkätundersökningar i samband med 9 fältundersökningar vid Umeås filialbibliotek. Detta visade att mangan ofta köps in utan urval, på grund av en brist på manga översatt till svenska.

The aim of this Master´s thesis is to explore how public libraries in a successful way can work in projects with young people. It intends to point out different factors that in a legible way affect the accomplishment and outcome of the project. Another purpose of the study is to uncover the various approaches existing within the projects towards young people and to find out why it is seen as important to work with youngsters, considering the hard work that it requires and the reluctance of the young to visit the library. The examination is based upon eight different and fulfilled projects. Information about these has been received through project descriptions, project reports and documents describing applications for economical benefits.

AbstractIn this master´s thesis I primarily investigate librarians´ and teachers´ conceptions of collaboration between libraries and schools and their conceptions of childrens´reading. Secondary I investigate the contents of laws concerning libraries and schools and also the school curriculums concerning the subject field of the Swedish language. My theoretical point of departure is that of social constructionism. I use two models in my analysis. One is a model of collaboration created by Patricia Montiel-Overall, called TLC (Teacher Librarian Collaboration), which grades collaboration from the lowest level (A) to the highest (D).

Den här utvärderingen undersöker vilken typ av Folkbibliotek användare vill ha idag. Den inriktar sig främst på tre teman; miljö, öppettider och utbud. Utvärderingsobjektet är Skellefteå stadsbibliotek och till viss del även närbiblioteken i Skellefteå. Jag använde mig av en kvantitativ metod i form av webbenkäter, för att få reda på svaren på mina frågeställningar. Jag tog även hjälp av litteratur som redan fanns skrivet om ämnet.
