To turn the dairy heifers out on pasture is the most natural way for the cattle to get Feed.
At the same time it is cheap and if it is right treated a Feed of high nutritive value. The
problem today is to get dairy heifers to grow enough when they are grazing at natural
pasture for the entire summer. Therefore, the opinions differ whether pasture is a
resource or a problem.
The increasing interest of pasture production is due to the fact that you can receive
grants for preserving valuable natural assets and cultural landscape elements in the
pasture land.
A high grazing pressure is necessary to preserve an open landscape and a great variety
of species. In the same time the heifers have to supply their nutritive needs in order to
grow and be large enough to show heat and be pregnant in right time to calve with a
sufficient body size and at an economically right age.
This paper includes a literature review on natural pasture, pasture production, and
growth of dairy heifers together with own interviews with dairy farmers about their
point of view to the pasture husbandry on the farms, how they plan for pasture, look
after natural pasture, treatment areas and take care of the calves and heifers. The results
indicate that the time it takes and the demanded work are the biggest factors to how and
why the farmers do as they do..

The coproduct, dried distillers grains + solubles (DDGS) from ethanol production based on wheat contains much rumen degradable protein and fiber with low digestibility. To compliment this quality in an effective way a grass silage low in protein and much digestible fiber is needed.
The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of adjusting the crude-protein concentration and fiber quality of the silage when Feeding DDGS and of varying the
inclusion level of DDGS, when Feeding the adjusted grass silage, on intake, milk yield and composition, faecal traits and Feed efficiency.
Four different total mixed rations were compared. The normal grass-clover silage had a crude protein content of 17,8 % and an NDF content of 46,2 % of dry matter. The adapted grass silage had a crude protein content of 14,6 % and an NDF content of 52,9 % of dry matter. The diets were formulated to have similar nutritional content except for A + 4 which had a higher content of rumen degradable crude protein and a lower concentration of NDF.

The purpose with this work was to investigate some alternatives for an effective handling with grain, to find the most economic alternative.
It is not common that moisture content is below 14% when harvesting grain in Sweden. To store the grain safe it has to be preserved in some way. I have described some of the most common systems for preserving grain in this paper. I have used the systems as a basis when I made calculations in handling the grain for a company.
I have chosen a company placed in south of Sweden. The productions are crop farming and pork.

This Master thesis was written for Lantmännen Agroetanol in Norrköping concerning the layout of their finished goods inventory and unloading of Feed after introducing a new product mix. Lantmännen Agroetanol has two production lines which produces Feed. Both lines lead to six silos, used as inventory of finished goods. The Feed from the two production lines differ in terms of quality, where as Lantmännen Agroetanol wants to separate their finished inventory in order to charge a higher price, by selling the better product as a premium. With two different Feed products the yearly revenue is expected to increase which motivates a research about the current capabilities and necessary changes to be made in the factory.

A Biogas plant in SLU?s (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences) management sustains to behave in con-nection with the new animal stables at Lövsta. There will primarily manure from stables that rot to biogas. The biogas plant will also have the capacity that rot others substrates that can arise in the farm operation. The aim with the biogas plant is to produce non fossil electrical and gas heat for own customs, to reduce smell impact from stables and to make possible different types of research investments within the area.This study has implemented multiple cases study of different investment scenarios.

Good Feeding practices are a basic aspect of good calf health. During the calf's first few months the calf is fed with purchased milk replacer or raw milk straight from the cow. On all farms, it will be a surplus of milk that may not be delivered to the dairy for various reasons. Milk that may not be supplied to the dairy includes colostrum and milk with unnormal properties, including milk from cows suffering from mastitis. This study investigated the possibility of improving the milk by pasteurization in order to secure its use as Feed for calves and thereby obtain an improved calf health.

Genotype by environment interactions of claw health in Swedish dairy cattle in tie stalls and loose-housing
Claw diseases are common diseases in modern dairy production. They are painful for the cow and costly for the producer. Differences in the prevalence of claw disease depending on housing system have previously been observed. This raises the question if there are genotype by environment (GxE) interactions for claw diseases in different housing systems. To investigate this claw trimming records for Swedish Red dairy cattle (SR) and Swedish Holstein cows (SH) were retrieved from the Swedish Dairy Association.

There is an uncertainty in the market for grain forcing the meat/milk producers to review alternative Feeds to a larger extent, in order to get control over the Feed costs. This has led to that the meat/milk producers need to have a good knowledge regarding how the different Feeds influences the animals and which technical equipment to use for handling. For those that produce their own Feedmix, there is a need to put interest in new crops and their characteristics to be able to get the knowledge of what is required for their own production. It is beneficial to keep an open dialogue with advisors to be updated in new crops and new technology for Feeding.
When mixing Feed at farm level, the legislation is not very clear since it the target group is large scale mixing plants. We have brought up the most important rules and regulations from the EU parliament Council as well as the ones from the Swedish Board of Agriculture (SJV), regarding Feed mixing on farm and factory level.
We have studied beans and pea at two different moisture levels, in order to evaluate how the moisture level affects the distribution of particles when milling with a plaitmill and a hammermill.
Feed-in-Tariffs för solceller - ett europeiskt perspektiv applicerat på Sverige
Denna studie granskar tre länder; Tyskland, Spanien och Danmark, som använt Feed-in-tariffs (FIT) under en längre tid för att främja elproduktion från solceller. Granskningen omfattar hur användningen sett ut och förändrats, samt om det resulterat i en ökning av solceller. I granskningen ingår också en genomgång av det nuvarande stödsystemet för solceller i Sverige, huruvida det främjat industrin för solceller och om FIT:s skulle kunna användas i Sverige. Granskningens resultat visar att det är svårt att härleda användningen av en viss sorts stödsystem till en ökning av solceller, då det ofta är många olika incitament som används samtidigt. Dessutom kan utformningen av FIT:s skilja sig så mycket att bara användningen av FIT inte garanterar att mängden solceller kommer öka.
Nötköttsproduktion i Västerbotten
Beef production in Sweden has traditionally been about rearing of dairy calves to slaughter. With reduced number of dairy cows and accordingly less dairy calves for slaughter, there has been a need for new forms of beef production in Sweden. In Västerbotten there are good conditions for beef production with a high Feeding level of roughage due to favourable climate. The aim of this thesis is to, through interviews with ten farmers with beef production in Västerbotten, study what and with how much they Feed their animals and link the results to production level. The thesis begins with a literature review where the general Feeding standards and Feeding recommendations for beef cows and growing cattle are examined.

To be a farmer and have suckler cows is a difficult combination especially considering the economy. Because of the increased Feed costs, the margins have become tighter. The meat price from beef cattle has increased a little when this text is written (spring, 2008), but not so much that it covers the cost for Feed etc.
I have a small suckler cow production on approximately 30 cows and 2 bulls plus followers as a part-time business. The herd is tied in the old dairy stable built in the late seventies.
