Ageism: A literature review

Background: The studies analyzed have shown among other things that ageism appears to be an overlooked category in intersectionality studies, Elderly is offered care in worse conditions than non-Elderly and stereotypes restrict Elderlys social space to act. The gray tsunami is approaching but studies show that large gaps separate different agegroups. Aims: The study discuss how scientists reason about ageism towards Elderly in a social science discussion. Method: A literature review was conducted in which fifteen articles were analyzed. The database used, is the librariescatalog Summon, at Malmö University. The articles was compiled in themes to give dilated clarity in ageisms complexity towards Elderly. The results are being discussed on the basis of terror management theory, gerotranscendence and social identitity theory. Results: Elderlys relation to society's expectations about aging can affect a self/body-dualism, a split.

Alkohol inom äldreomsorgen : Hur hanteras problematiken?

The purpose of our qualitative study is to investigate how the caretakers, in the Elderly care,interpret and manage the issue of alcohol problems in Elderly people. We have beenperforming semi-structured interviews on 9 people, on different levels in the Elderly care.There were 3 Elderly care managers, 1 nurse, 1 assistance administrator and 4 auxiliarynurses, who all, at some level, work with alcohol problems in Elderly people. Thoseinterviews were performed singularly, with one exception: we interviewed an Elderly caremanager and her 2 auxiliary nurses at the same time. To analyse our empirics, we have usedthe theories of Power and Ageism. Our study shows that the auxiliary nurses, who are theones who must deal with these problems, have great difficulties to perform their work becausethey have no qualified knowledge about alcohol problems.

Ett aktivt val? : En studie om äldre personers boende och vilka mekanismer som styr deras val av boende

The objective of this study was to explore the mechanisms controlling Elderly people's choice of staying in there own home.The main questions were: What makes some people move to retirement homes while some people stay in their own home? What is the emotional relation to housing for people in general and Elderly people in particular? How does the assessment of aid and application of the law affect Elderly people's possibility to choose their way of living? What mechanisms during the twentieth century have controlled the society's way of looking on Elderly people's housing? What future scenarios can we expect concerning Elderly people's housing?Our method consisted of a literature study combined with qualitative interviews.The authors found a complex picture concerning Elderly people's relationship to their housing and the will, wishes and possibilities to move to a retirement home or stay in their own home. One factor that affects Elderly people's will to move is a deteriorated health. Another is the increased need of a safe living and access to personnel at all time. Also the assessment of aid and application of the law affect Elderly people's possibility to stay at home or to move to a retirement home.

Att behålla hjärna och kropp igång vid åldrandet - Vårdpersonals syn på aktivitet på särskilda boenden

The purpose of this study is to examine how activities are looked upon, organized and put into practice at homes designed for the Elderly. To achieve this we have done a survey study, based upon the caregiver´s point of view regarding the subject activity. The result of this study has been interpreted and analyzed with help from the engagement- and disengagement theories. The result shows us that the caregiver´s find the term activity slightly abstract, and rather difficult to define. All of the caregiver´s did agree on the matter that it?s good to activate Elderly people and that the Elderly people are activated at a large extent.

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to examine the views of the Elderly and the caregivers that appear in brochures for the Elderly and the discourses that can be found within. The data that the study is based on was collected and analysed using content analysis and Faircloughs (1992) critical discourse analysis. The theoretical frameworks that have been used are social constructionism, critical discourse analysis, assortment and protest, and New Public Management. The results showed two images of older people (I) the Elderly as active and autonomous and (II) the Elderly as passive and in need of help. The results also showed two pictures of the caregiver (III) the caregiver and NPM, and (IV), the non-profit care provider as a complement.

The overall purpose with this study was to examine the influence Elderly people have over their granted home help. Specifically, the aim was to examine in what extent the image of the Elderly as a unique individual emerges in the plans where the home help is described [?genomförandeplaner?]. A plan which is personally designed is used as an indicator of personal influence. A text analysis inspired by Michel Foucault?s discourse concept, was carried out and the study adopts the concepts standardization and categorization as well as the theory of ?Sense of coherence?.

Studies show that 10-15 percent of Sweden's population, 65 years or older are estimated to have depression or depression symptoms. The symptoms of depression among Elderly people are less than symptoms of young people. This could cause that Elderly people with depression are not always discovered. Studies show that Elderly people who live in residential homes show more signs of depression than Elderly people living at home. If Elderly people live in a supporting environment, can it prevent that a depression developed.The prevention of depression among Elderly people is a topic that is not discussed among previously research.

The study is based on six qualitative interviews with people between the ages of 65 and 80, living in Nacka, Sweden. This thesis is a collaboration with Stiftelsen Stockholms la?ns A?ldrecentrum/ Stockholm Gerontology Center and part of their follow up study concerning simplified administration for Elderly people applying for home care services in Nacka.

Since the care for the Elderly is a low priority there are shortcomings. One of these shortcomings are that the Elderly living in nursing homes do not feel that they have a meaningful existence. Sensory studies of an energy dense drink for elderly people

The average length of life is increasing in the western world, hence the older population is growing. A common health problem among the Elderly is malnutrition. Malnutrition causes decreased body strength and is associated with an amplified risk of infections, depression, fractures and increased mortality. The health care system is therefore faced with the challenge to prevent malnutrition among the growing population of Elderly. This could be done by providing nutritious foods developed to meet the specific needs of Elderly. The overall objective of this project was to test a healthy energy dense drink based on oats targeted for the Elderly consumers as a strategy to prevent malnutrition among Elderly.

Äldre invandrare och den offentliga äldreomsorgen - bistånd, behov och särskildhet

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether an increasing amount of Elderly immigrants will set new demands upon the public eldercare. The focus is on the officials whithin the public care of Elderly in Västra Götaland district, and their experiences. A second purpose of this study is to add the experiences of the officials to former research treating the topic of Elderly immigrants and their experiences of the public eldercare in Sweden.The survey has been carried out through interviewing all together seven officials working within the public care of elder in varying districts of Västra Götaland. The interviews have later been summoned under four different themes such as, ?Culture, customs and tradition?, ?Interaction and communication?, ?Information? and ?The future of the public eldercare?.The study indicates that our result based on the interviews, is in several references corresponding to former research on the topic.

Background: Physological abuse consists of threats, harassment, humiliation, telling off, refuse to talk, social isolation, abandonment as well as attitudes that lead to a feeling of insecurity and desperation. Institutional elder abuse is very elusive and an overall picture is still considered missing.Aim: The purpose of this essay was to review psychological abuse within the Elderly care.Method: This essay is based on a literature study with systematic search.Result: This article review led to main categories and the result of the study is presented after these. The first ones gives a picture of the kind of psychological abuse that occured within the the Elderly care. The second one deals with the possible explanations for psychological abuse within Elderly care. The result showed that verbal assault was the most common form of psychological abuse against Elderly.

Bemötande av äldre missbrukande vårdtagare inom hemtjänsten

The purpose with our essay was to describe and understand the treatment of the homehelp staff towards the Elderly addicted caretakers within the care system. Both in a practical aspect as well as in an attitudinal aspect. In order to get the answers to our overall purpose of our essay, we had as a starting point the following questions:* What help is given to the Elderly addicted caretakers?* Are the Elderly addicted caretakers a stigmatized caretaker group?* What approach does the home help staff conduct towards the Elderly addicted caretakers?* Is there a preparedness among the home help staff when it comes to as to whether or not a care taker has an addiction issue or not?When analysing the material we used a qualitative analytical method in order to understand the care givers treatment towards the addicted caretakers. We combined the interviews with the so called vinjett technique; furthermore we used various sociological theories as well as earlier scientific discoveries.The result of the essay was that Elderly addicted caretakers are an exposed group.
