The aim of this study is to examine the services offered by the public libraries in the context of distance learning students. I wanted to examine if there has been any discussion among the public libraries on how the new needs and demands affect them. To get a premonition on the development in Sweden I have focused on the public libraries in the province of Blekinge, which in many ways can be looked upon as precursors. Interviews have taken place with the distance learning students contacts at the local public libraries, the responsible librarian and a distance learning organiser at the local university college, the county library consultant and one of the chief librarians. I have reached the conclusion that no thorough discussion on the far-reaching aspects has taken place.

The scope of this master´s thesis is the issue of usability in relation to interface design,in particular the interface of a university library´s online public accessed catalogue, orOPAC. Since the OPAC can be seen as the library´s ?shop window? to the world, it isof great importance that the interface to the OPAC can be used by patrons witheffectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction.The master´s thesis is based on a qualitative study performed at Karolinska InstitutetsUniversity library, and contains both a usability evaluation and an interview study. Twointerfaces were evaluated: a standard web interface provided by the system supplier, andan interface developed in-house by Karolinska Institutet´s systems department. The twointerfaces are both connected to the same online library catalogue, thus making possiblea comparative study..

The purpose of this study is to analyse the offer from the ministry of education and cultural affairs to Swedish public libraries concerning a computerised connection to SUNET (the Swedish University Network). The study is based on analyses of the main texts from the campaign and interviews in order to identify arguments that caused the libraries to accept or decline the offer. My conclusions are that the marketing of the SUNET-offer was to a large extent filled with technicalities, and that the campaign failed to identify and focus on the true recipients the decision-makers. The wordings used in the written material were too negative and discouraging. In order to succeed with future concentrations concerning public libraries, it is vitally important to overcome the boundaries between the decision-makers in the local government, the people responsible for information technology and the library staff..

Jag har i detta arbete med hjälp av kvalitativa sökningar i arkiv och med litteratur i ämnet samt dagstidningar, prövat att kartlägga vilka bakomliggande faktorer som har varit med och format Svartöstaden som samhälle. Jag har även försökt belysa vad som var det bakomliggande förhållandet för etablering av bostadsområdet och varför Svartöstaden kom att bilda ett municipalsamhället samt vilka krav som ställdes på en sådan juridisk tillhörighet. Med kännedom av ovannämnda har jag sedan prövat att få fram en översikt på områdets prägel. Området uppfördes ursprungligen på grund av den allt ökande befolkningen i Luleå stad. Svartöstadens geografiska utveckling begränsades av att det varit inklämd mellan hamnen, järnverket och malmhögarna.

This master´s thesis is a comparative study of the importance of eight factors suggested in the literature to be related to the perceived utility of the service Book a librarian (Swe. Boka en bibliotekarie). Disciplinary differences were also analysed. 73 encounters between students and librarians in 11 Swedish academic libraries were studied using a survey. Six factors were significantly related (at the .05 level) to the utility of the service.

The aim of this Master's thesis is to study what place public libraries have in local politics, particularly from the point of view of the politicians. To answer this, I have interviewed politicians, participated as a silent observer of a public debate, and studied articles on library politics in newspapers and other press. The results show that politicians in general have a positive view of libraries and good co-operation with library professionals, and that they have a fairly up-to-date view of libraries. They are, however, less interested in library issues in general, and are often complacent with the way things are already running. The newspaper studies show that library issues are usually only discussed when a specific library is somehow in danger.

My purpose with the study is to investigate if it is possible to argue in favor of organizing public libraries according to the client based theory. To create a base to argue from I have studied UFO, a department focused on young adults at the age between 15 and 25 at the public library of Malmö. This case study, performed by investigating the documentation of UFO as well as conducting an interview with the project leader, is the base from which I then can argue for or against the idea of organizing public libraries according to the client based theory. Public libraries should always reflect the communities they serve. This challenges the staff of different libraries in different regions to arrange their organizations accordingly to their local population and to be flexible enough to follow the changes of this population.

Uppsatsen behandlar officersboställen i Skåne från indelningsverkets tid (1682-1901), med särskild inriktning på byggnadsvårds- och bevarandefrågor samt på tillämpningen av lagstiftningen kring byggnadsminnen och annan kulturhistoriskt värdefull bebyggelse.Uppsatsens tidsmässiga fokus ligger på 1850-talet. Den bygger på arkiv- och fältstudier kring det trettiotal av Skånes 50 officersboställen som har karaktärshus uppförda enligt de av militären fastställda typritningarna. Mer detaljerade undersökningar, uppmätningar och foto­grafering har genomförts kring tre välbevarade boställen, Örsjö, Månstorp och Hjälmshult. Uppfölj­ningar har också gjorts kring fem boställen som har genomgått mer om­fattande och inte helt önskvärda förändringar. Sist i uppsatsen finns åtskilliga tips för den som är intresse­rad av att vårda militära boställen och andra byggnader på ett varsamt sätt..

The aim of this master thesis is to study if the websites of the Swedish public libraries are accessible to all people. According to the library law all people must have access to the public libraries and their information services. Today, when the Internet is one of the largest sources of information, it is important that all people, including those with different kind of disabilities, children, elderly, immigrants and people with old technical equipment, have access to the public libraries websites.We have in this study considered the graphic user interface, the language, the structure and the navigation possibilities at ten public library websites. We have from a checklist of our own, based upon the opinion of different experts such as Jacob Nielsen and Tommy Sundström, investigated the websites.The main finding of our study is that the websites are generally accessible even thou we found a lack of accessible for immigrants. Most of the websites had some pages in English, but none hade all pages in this language.

The aim of this master thesis is to explore what role libraries play in the educational process for university students suffering from dyslexia. The question at issue is whether the library is able to meet the needs of students who have difficulty in using the libraries main resource, i.e. printed documents and information in written form. An often expressed view indicates that the modern library creates a lot of obstacles for dyslectic students. The method used is a literature study followed by an empirical study in which interviews were conducted with four students suffering from dyslexia and studying at two different universities and using different libraries.

Genom litteraturstudier följt av en semiotisk analys av bildmaterial från turismnäringen, Riksantikvarieämbetet och kulturvårdssektorn i Norrköpings kommun är syftet med detta arbete att öka förståelsen för hur kommersialisering av kulturarv sker i bilder och genom bildspråk. Bildmaterialet består av bilder ifrån broschyrer, kataloger, foldrar, hemsidor och arkiv. Uppsatsen utforskar på ett handgripligt sätt hur turismen använder bilder av kulturarv för att framställa och marknadsföra en destination, i synnerhet det industriella kulturarvet Norrköpings Industrilandskap. Uppsatsen tar ner teoretiska begrepp som bildproduktion, bildbruk och bildtolkning till en hanterbar nivå och undersöker hur dessa tar sig i uttryck inom turismen, men också inom kultursektorn genom att jag i uppsatsen talar om två bildpraktiker; turism- och kulturarvsbilder. Syftet med detta är att visa på hur kulturarv kan tillämpas i bild, men också att jämföra vilken roll industrilandskapet får i dessa bilder..

Denna kandidatuppsats i informatik behandlar användningen av digitala arkivsystem i offentlig förvaltning. Författarna har ställt sig frågan vilken påverkan dessa system har haft för myndigheternas möjlighet att leva upp till de krav som ställs i arkivlagen och tryckfrihetsförordningen på offentliga arkiv och vad syftet är med att införa digitala arkivsystem i offentlig förvaltning. För att besvara frågeställningarna gjordes en studie på fyra skånska kommuner där personer som på olika sätt arbetar med digitaliserade bygglovsarkiv intervjuades. Resultatet tyder på att de digitala arkivsystemens främsta påverkan är en ökad tillgänglighet till det arkiverade materialet. Handläggare och andra som behöver ta del av den information som arkivet innehåller har fått nya möjligheter att göra detta i och med digitaliseringen av arkiven.

Detta examensarbete syftar till att införa ett digitalt arkiv och ett datorbaserat system för hantering och handläggning av detaljplaner vid planfunktionen vid Länsstyrelsen i Norrbottens län. Hanteringen, handläggningen och arkiveringen av detaljplaner har kartlagts för att undersöka hur ett digitalt system skulle kunna se ut. En datamodell har designats för arkivering av digitala planer. Planerna lagras som ytor i shapeformatet. Planerna lagras kommunvis i lokalt koordinatsystem.

This master thesis was written in the purpose to study how the location and access to computers in the physical realm of the public library reflects the undergoing changes in the public libraries role in Swedish society. This study is done in a form of a case study of three small public libraries. All of them were in the process of transforming both their physical and virtual space. The thesis focuses on where in the library the computers are placed and how their location interacts with the libraries main tasks. It also focuses on the analysis of the relationship between these two elements and how that relationship reflects the alteration of the public libraries place in society.

Detta arbete har för avsikt att kartlägga den konflikt som uppstod vid Fagersta Bruk underlockouten 1923. Arbetets material kommer huvudsakligen från Fagersta Kommuns arkiv därmaterialet om Fagersta Bruks AB finns. Annat material som undersöks är från Svenska Metallindustriarbetareförbundavdelning 132.Arbetet visar hur Fagersta Bruks ekonomi var skuldsatt och i behov av likvida medel i en tidav lågkonjunktur. Den lockout som utlystes medförde dock inte några insparningar utan konjunkturenvände och företaget försökte få igång produktionen men fackförbundet kämpadeemot. Förbundet hade för avsikt att få igenom sina krav.
