Tollarsjuka hos Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever : en sjukdomsbeskrivning
In the dog breed Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (NSDTR)
several Dogs suffer from joint pain and possibly pain from the
muscles. This diffuse disease is called Immune-mediated Non-
Erosive Arthritis in Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.
The disease is most likely of autoimmune nature where the etiology
still is unknown. The musculoskeletal symptoms of stiffness and
shifting lameness are intermittently seen. Some Dogs also have
dermatological changes and some Dogs suffer from pain when
opening their mouth.
The study included 20 diseased and 20 healthy NSDTR. The purpose
was to describe immune-mediated arthritis in NSDTR based on
symptoms, results of analysis and effect of treatment.
Among the diseased Dogs 65% had serum positive for antinuclear
antibodies by indirect immunofluorescense (IIF) ANA-test.
Dermoid sinus hos Rhodesian ridgeback :
Rhodesian ridgeback is a dog breed that originates from southern Africa. The characteristic ridge (a dorsal ridge where the hair grows in the opposite direction to the general coat) is shared with an Asian breed, Thai ridgeback. The origin and inheritance of the ridge has been examined and defined. The ridge-mutation is a duplication that contains four complete genes, FGF3, FGF4, FGF19 and ORAOV1 and the 3´-end of CCND1. The ridge is inherited as an autosomal, dominant trait and predisposes for Dermoid sinus (DS), a disease that develops during embryogenesis.
Jämförelse av träningsmetod i olika hundsportsgrenar
Dogs have been held as pets for thousands of years. Dogs held today usually get some sort of training some time during their life. You can train Dogs for many different reasons such as general obedience or you can train them for competition. When training a dog every behaviour is followed by a consequence. These consequences are positive reinforcement, positive punishment, negative punishment and negative reinforcement.
Utvärdering av ett mikroalbuminuritest till hund :
The occurrence of small amounts of albumin in urine, microalbuminuria (MA), is used both in human- and veterinary medicine as an indicator for patients who have developing proteinuria. Proteinuria can be prerenal, renal or postrenal which is important to establish during an investigation. With conventional methods decreased renal function is not detected until 70 % of renal function is lost. The ability to detect and start a treatment earlier might reverse or slow the progression of disease.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability of Heska® E.R.D.-Health Screen?, a test for microalbuminuria in Dogs, to detect albuminuria.
The effect of training on spontaneous blink rate in dogs
The spontaneous blink rate is found to be a non-invasive but functional, reliable and useful way to monitor central dopaminergic activity. Dopamine is associated with a range of functions such as reward, motivation and learning. It plays an important role in goal-directed behavior and in maintaining a behavior once a task is learned. As far as the author knows, there are today no publications that discuss the topic regarding the possible link between training and spontaneous blink rate in Dogs. Therefore, eight privately owned Dogs were included in this study to determine if there was a significant difference in the spontaneous blink rate before and after the process of learning a task.
Foster owner factors influence temperament test results of military dogs and their suitability for service
Military Dogs in Sweden spend their first 18 months after weaning with a foster owner that has volunteered to care for its upbringing. The foster owner is advised by a consultant and offered three opportunities to train the dog together with other foster owners. There is a positive correlation between the number of attended training opportunities with the consultant, or other professional dog trainers, and the results of the dog in the temperament test at the end of the 18 months. The test results are in turn positively correlated with the likelihood of the dog to enter service. This thesis aims to investigate why the number of training opportunities is important for the dog?s chance to enter service by identifying foster owner factors that influence the success of the dog and which temperament test items the factors have the strongest impact on.
Behandling av hanhundar med deslorelin :
This article presents a survey of male Dogs treated with the gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist deslorelin (Suprelorin®, Virbac) at three animal clinics in central Sweden. Filled-in questionnaires from 110 Dogs were received. The paper also includes a review of existing litterature concerning reproduction in male Dogs, focusing on endocrinology, the effects of gonadectomy and the GnRH agonist deslorelin.
Continuous treatment with deslorelin produces infertility in male Dogs. The pituitary is
initially stimulated by deslorelin leading to a rise in luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) secretion. As a consequence the testosterone levels also increase temporarily.
Feromonterapi för hund ? en kvalificerad stressreducent inom djursjukvård?
Numerous Dogs are stressed during a stay at a veterinary clinic. Stress has an impact physically as well as mentally, and may influence animal care. There are different ways to prevent and handle animal stress. Dog Appeasing Pheromones (DAP) is sometimes used to reduce stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential need for stressreducers, explore the use of DAP and evaluate pheromonatherapy for Dogs as a potential stressreducer within veterinary health care.
Hundars inverkan på hälsa hos vårdtagare på vård- och omsorgsboende - en litteraturstudie
ABSTRACT Background: Aging and losing cognitive and physical functions is difficult. To also be affected by dementia means that you lose some part of your identity and the ability to take care of yourself. It is important to find alternative, non-pharmacological ways to increase health for the elderly and those who are affected by dementia. When Dogs are used for therapeutic purposes in health care it is roughly divided into two different forms; AAA (Animal Assisted Activity) and AAT (Animal Assisted Therapy). AAI (Animal Assisted Intervention) is also used as a term, in which AAT is included.
Problematiken med aggressiva hundar och hur människor förhåller sig till den
In today's society Dogs have become more popular as pets. This increase may result in more dog owners with lack of knowledge on how to care for them. A major social issue is the societies viewpoint to fighting breeds and similar breeds with an aggressive behavior. We experience that there is an increasing problem with aggressive Dogs and their owners in Sweden that needs to be taken seriously. The aim of our study is to find out if people in Sweden think there is a problem with aggressive Dogs. The study has been carried out as a literature study and a survey.
Seroprevalence of Japanese encephalitis virus in pigs and dogs in the Mekong Delta
Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is one of the leading causes of acute encephalitis in humans. The virus is spread by mosquitoes, mainly belonging to the Culex species. The main reservoirs are considered to be birds and pigs, with pigs constituting the most important reservoir in regard to human infection. During the last few decades the production of pork has increased significantly in Vietnam. With 90% of pigs being kept in households owning 10 pigs or less, pigs are widely spread across most parts of the country.
Jämförelse mellan subjektiv och objektiv bedömning av hälta hos häst på böjt spår.
The female dog has a unique reproductive endocrinology, with high levels of progesterone throughout the 70-day long luteal phase. In this project, markers of glucose metabolism were studied and compared from the aspects of breed group and time in oestral cycle. The parameters studied were: glucose, insulin, progesterone, fructosamine and the newly introduced analysis of HbA1c. Hba1c was also further evaluated and discussed as a diagnostic tool in canine medicine. No differences in terms of glucose markers were found between a group of purebreed Dogs of various breeds compared to a group of Dogs with high risk of dioestrus diabetes, namely the Norwegian and Swedish elkhounds. No differences were found between the two sample occasions, anoestrus and dioestrus, concluding that there is no need for relating test results to the time of the oestrous cycle in middle-aged intact female Dogs. There were statistically significant higher values of all glucose markers in diabetic Dogs than in non-diabetic Dogs. When it came to HbA1c, however, there was a larger overlap between the two groups, compared to fructosamine.
Långtidsuppföljning och artrosutveckling hos hundar kirurgiskt behandlade för ruptur av kraniala korsbandet :
The high incidence of cranial cruciate ligament injury in Dogs results in both
suffering and significant costs due to treatment and care of affected Dogs. Today
there are several different technics for surgical treatment in Dogs with ruptured
cranial cruciate ligament. At University Animal Hospital (UDS), SLU, in Uppsala
two fundamentally different methods; TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy)
and external fixation with suture material are practiced.
The aim of this study was to estimate if the different surgery technics result in any
difference regarding the function of the dog in a long term perspective. Since
motion and function are very affected by arthritis, was the purpose also to
determine if there are any differences in developing arthritis between Dogs
surgical treated with external fixation respectively with TPLO. Development of
arthritis is common after surgery or traumatic injuries in a joint, such as cruciate
ligament rupture.
Unfortunately was the number of Dogs in the study to small to achieve two
comparable groups.

Radiologiska tecken vid lungödem hos hund och katt :
Williams, E. 2003 Radiologic sign of lung oedema in the dog and cat.
To determine if the descriptions of lung oedema in the literature accurately describe the presence and frequency of radiologic signs, thoracic radiographs of 55 Dogs with mitral regurgitation due to endocardiosis (ME), 46 Dogs with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), 9 Dogs with hunting oedema, and 20 cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) were analysed. The location, type (diffuse or patchy, without or with air bronchograms) and presence of pleural oedema, bronchial wall thickening, widened pulmonary veins, and heart enlargement with subjectively and by the VHS measurement, were determined, and analysed by chi squared test with respect to disease. The Dogs nearly always had diffuse oedema, whereas 35% of the cats had a patchy pattern, which agreed with the literature. The common occurrence of cranioventral and caudioventral oedema in heart failure was not described.
