Pilot study: influence of the Samoan dog population on visitors

A range of public health and animal welfare problems has been shown to be associated with free-roaming Dogs. With a high density of free-roaming Dogs and with a major tourism industry, Samoan tourists are likely to be influenced by the presence of the Dogs. The tourists are mainly from the Oceanic region; with New Zealand and Australia as the biggest contributors. The aim of this study was to examine the potential impacts of Dogs on visitors to Samoa. A questionnaire was handed out to 281 visitors all over Samoa, collecting opinions and information on visitors? experiences and behaviour regarding the Samoan Dogs.

Surgical stress response in dogs diagnosed with pyometra undergoing ovariohysterectomy

The aim of this study was to investigate the intraoperative surgical stress response in Dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy and to compare acepromazine and medetomidine as premedications. 15 Dogs diagnosed with pyometra were used in this study. Blood pressure and heart rate were used as parameters to measure surgical stress response. The surgery was divided into four phases. Phase 0 was the period 10 minutes before the skin incision, phase 1 was skin incision and opening of abdomen, phase 2 was manipulation of uterine horns, ligation and transection of mesovarium and phase 3 was ligation of cervix, removal of organs and closing the abdomen. The results showed that phase 2 was the most intense phase of surgical stress, regardless of which premedication the Dogs received. When acepromazine and medetomidine were compared the results showed that within phase 3, all Dogs that were given medetomidine had higher blood pressure compared to Dogs that were given acepromazine. The Dogs that were given acepromazine had higher heart rate than the Dogs that were given medetomidine in phase 0, phase 2 and phase 3. .

Med hunden i fokus - en metod att identifiera hundars användningsområde utifrån det postkraniala skelettet

AbstractThis is a study of present day Dogs with the purpose to establish a method to investigate archaeological Dogs and determine their use in the past. The study has focused on measurements of five bone elements, scapula, humerus, radius, ulna and femur. A principal component analysis has been applied in order to decide which measurements to be further used in the analysis. Different proportions have been calculated on these measurements.A test to try the method has also been done on bones of a wolf and a dog without known background. The results from the different elements are positive, and they narrow the field down to two dog types of which one is more likely to be true than the other. The final results show that, although over lapses between the four different dog groups; hunting Dogs, guard/work Dogs, sled Dogs and shepherd's Dogs exists, it is possible to distinguish different dog usage from the proportions of the bones..

Social kontakt för hund i rastgård ? när kan kraven anses uppfyllda?

People in Sweden have more and more Dogs in their care, and several of these Dogs are kept in kennels in back yards for various reasons. According to Swedish animal welfare legislations the need for social contact for Dogs has to be met. However, there are few details presented on how to meet the need and when it can be considered satisfied. Does the dog need human contact to fulfill the need, or is the company of other Dogs enough? This study aims to specify what can be acceptable when it comes to fulfilling Dogs? social needs in accordance with the Swedish animal welfare legislation.

Betydelsen av tidig hantering av nyanlända försökshundar till en försöksdjursavdelning :

AstraZeneca in Mölndal (AZRDM) uses beagles bred at Rååhöjdens kennel in Örkelljunga for their research purposes. The staff wishes to have mentally stable Dogs to work with, sine stress can effect the research results. The purpose of this study was to put together the testresults from Dogs delivered 2003 and 2004, to see if there is a connection between delivery age and testresult. We have also worked out a method to test if early planned handling of the Dogs makes a difference on how the Dogs later respond in a testsituation, and tried this method in a pilotstudy. The data that we have based our calculations on is 172 Dogs, divided into 108 males and 64 females. We found a significant connection between the age at delivery and the testresult in contactability for female Dogs delivered in 2003, where increasing age led to decreasing grades in the test at AZRDM. When looking at the difference in testresults between test number two at the kennel and the test at AZRDM we found a significant connection for female Dogs delivered during 2003, ie the difference takes on a more negative value with increasing age at delivery. We found a difference between the two sexes in our calculations.

A comparison of commercial scent lures in attracting Raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides)

The invasive species raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) is currently under establishment Sweden and it is vital to discover invading individuals to prevent colonization. The use of wildlife cameras to discover dispersing raccoon Dogs have been implemented in the north-European raccoon dog management program. In this study, I test the ability of four commercially available scent lures to attract raccoon Dogs to camera stations. The study was conducted in the Åland Islands where raccoon Dogs are abundant and the results could improve the effectiveness of the camera stations used in the program. I used 12 sites with five camera stations in each and tested the four lures and one control with no lure in each site.

Immunmedierad hemolytisk anemi hos hund : en retrospektiv studie

Immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia (IMHA) is an immune-mediated destruction of erythrocytes and is one of the most common haematological diseases diagnosed in Dogs. The haemolysis is a type II immunoreaction and is initiated by IgG or IgM antibodies or complements. This retrospective study includes 63 Dogs suffering from primary IMHA. The study was based on information from records from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences in Uppsala and from the Animal Hospital in Strömsholm. The aim of the study was to evaluate the progress of the disease, treatment and the prognostic factors in different breeds, gender and age. Following criteria were used for the Dogs to be allowed in the study: the Dogs were diagnosed with anaemia, the anaemia was regenerative and autoagglutination and/or spherocytes were seen in the blood. About 50 % of the Dogs in the study were diagnosed with IMHA within 2-6 years of age. Wire-haired dachshund was remarkably one of the most common breeds in this study together with Cocker and Springer spaniel.

Hur påverkas vård- och terapihundar av sitt arbete och hur uppfattar föraren hundens känslor?

Today's research on animal assisted interventions (AAI) has focused on the positive effects on humans. Dogs used for AAI are an expanding market, but the research on this area hasn't followed the increasing use. The few studies on Dogs in this field mostly observed their cortisol-levels and are very ambiguous. I have observed the behaviour of Dogs working with AAI compared to when they are off-duty to see how they are affected by their work. Their handlers where also told to make an assessment of the dog's emotions during the session.
