The purpose of this master's thesis is to describe and analyse the origin and development of the library of Workers´ Educational Association in the community of Oskarström. This library is special because the organisation run it much longer than usual, until 1977, and to find an answer to why, we have the following questions: Why does the library of Workers´ Educational Association start their activity in Oskarström, and how does it develop, in relation to premises, librarians, financing, the stock of books and the numbers of books out on loan? What is the reason that the library in Oskarström is municipalized as late as 1977? The methods we use are hermeneutics and evaluation of the sources. The library is founded in 1914 and become important for the workers. Important sources of income are the subventions given by the state, municipality and other associations.

The aim of this study is to examine how the adult students in the Adult Education Initiative called Kunskapslyftet, experience their use of the Main Public Library in Linköping and how the librarians experience the change in their working situation after Adult Education Initiative has started in July 1997. Methods used in the survey are interviews with librarians and students in the Adult Education Initiative. I have also distributed questionnaires to some of the adult students and studied literature that describe students use of libraries. The result shows that the students generally are satisfied with the service they get from the librarians at the Main Public Library. It also shows that what the students mostly asked for, are help to search information about a subject and to find literature in the library.

The purpose of this thesis was to investigate thephenomenon language café, an activity that is held in public libraries into which anyone is welcome who wants to practice their skills in Swedish, and see how this can be put in relation to integration. To reach the purpose we developed two research-questions; What does the language café fulfill for its participants? and How can the language café contribute to the promotion of integration? The study is based on semi-structured interviews with seven participants from language cafés. The theory used to analyze the results from the interviews is the Swedish sociologist José Alberto Diaz theory about the integration process which can be divided into seven dimensions. The findings of the thesis were that the language café can fill the function as a place to Speak Swedish, for Community-information, a place to meet and a place for trust and self-confidence.

Vacation 2.0 är ett ledighetsansökningssystem utvecklat hos CGI i Linköping för deras Linköping- och Norrköpingskontor. Med Vacation 2.0 kan anställda boka in kommande semester, föräldraledighet samt jour. Vacation 2.0 ger HR-avdelningen en översikt över tillgänglig personal genom en sammanställning av alla arbetsgruppers ledighetsansökningar. Systemet underhålls av en administratör som har behörighet att administrera arbetsgrupper och ändra anställdas existerande ledighetsansökningar. De anställda som är ansvariga för en grupp eller är anställd på HR-avdelningen kan ges behörigheten av systemadministratören.Kraven för systemet togs fram genom intervjuer med anställda som vi sedan utvärderade.

Vi har varit en grupp på fyra studenter som på tio veckors tid skall ha utvecklat några applikationer, samt ett bibliotek för att kunna hantera diverse gester till ett system som kan hantera flera användare samtidigt. Vi har fått i uppdrag av Luleå Tekniska Universitet att prova denna relativt nya teknik och se vad den kan ha för kapacitet och användningsområden i framtiden. Min uppgift i arbetet var att hjälpa till att utveckla ett bibliotek för att hantera olika gester som en användare kan tänkas göra. I detta examensarbete så berättar jag om hur man skall kunna upptäcka komplexa gester i ett system där flera användare kan påverka samtidigt. Jag kommer med denna rapport att ta upp de problem jag har haft, vilka lösningar jag har kommit fram till samt vad jag ser på möjliga framtida tillägg till biblioteket.

The purpose of this masters thesis is to find out whether the library can be a way to support integration. To fulfil this purpose we have, by qualitative interviews, obtained information about eight immigrant womens views on and experiences of the Swedish public library. Through the literature and earlier research we have presented a background of immigrants and integration in Sweden along with factors that may influence the integration process. We have tried to give an insight into what is said about the immigrant woman in research and media, which we think affects her life and we also have given a short introduction to immigrant womens life in Sweden today. Of great interest for our essay have also been the public librarys objectives and social role in society.

Jeanine Basingers bok The World War II Combat Film presenterar en annars väldigt oupmärksammad genre, den amerikanska Andra Världskrigs-stridsfilmen. Utifrån den mall som Basinger beskriver i boken har jag här diskuterat och analyserat hur Saving Private Ryan håller sig till mallen som skapats av tidigare stridsfilmer. Mallen består i korthet av en mängd element som används genomgående i genren; såsom gruppen, hjälten, målet och fienden. Dessa element förekommer från den första andra världskrigs-stridsfilmen Bataan från 1943 och har konsoliderats och utvecklats sedan dess. Slutsatsen blir att även om SPR blivit känd som en nydanande och orginell film så är håller den sig nästan slaviskt till mallen, det enda som möjligt kan skilja den lite från andra filmer i genren är det ursprungliga målet, det är inte vanligt att ha ett såpass politiskt inkorrekt mål som att rädda en enda man..

The aim of this thesis is to investigate how libraries market themselves in social media and why they do it. I have studied a certain public library?s process of introducing social media into its marketing mix, the preparations for this process and the effects of these marketing methods.The theoretical framework for this thesis is based on relationship marketing, a theory which focuses on relationships, networks and interaction. My main method has been semi-structured interviews with a librarian at the relevant library, with the manager of the library and with the head of the municipality?s department of communication.The results of my studies show that marketing on social media is a positive and important thing for libraries.

Syftet med denna uppsats har varit att undersöka hur bibliotekarier arbetar för att förmedla LL-böcker till dess potentiella läsare. Jag har velat skapa en förståelse för vilka problem som kan omge denna litteraturform sett från bibliotekariernas perspektiv. Undersökningen bygger på kvalitativa intervjuer med bibliotekarier på sammanlagt sex olika bibliotek, tre stadsbibliotek och tre filialer, i Västerbottens och Norrbottens län. Jag har använt mig av grundad teori som metod för att genomföra undersökningen. Resultatet visade att LL-böcker ofta är ett eftersatt område på biblioteket.

This thesis presents a comparative study of image registration at two picture collection libraries. The two registration systems are analyzed as to the theoretical principles behind them and their practical application, and related to theoretical tools for subject analysis and bibliographic standards. While a growing number of picture collections now digitize their material, generally accepted standards and methods for the registration of digital images are still lacking. Many different systems coexist, often developed in-house in response to ad hoc needs and based on traditional registration tools created for textual documents, resulting in internationally incompatible mixed-format systems. The two picture collections examined here, however, have opted for similar, standardized tools for registration and subject analysis, and while there are differences in their application and focus, they have both considered issues of cross-system compatibility.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the levels of social distance used by the librarians and users in the virtual reference interview. With a conversational analysis and applied politeness theory 49 chat transcripts where analysed in order to answer the question of how the interlocutors positioned themselves regarding the social distance between them. By identifying what communicative strategies where used the following results were found. Generally the social distance between librarians and users is low in the Swedish virtual reference interview. Even though both parties used informal and casual language the results indicate that the librarians face wants were valued slightly higher than the users which were illustrated by a some what higher social distance in the stages of the conversations when the librarians face was under most threat.

Denna uppsats handlar om skolbibliotekariens roll i skolans verksamhet och deras samarbete med lärarkåren. Syftet med studien var dels att ta reda på vilka kompetenser skolbibliotekarierna anser är centrala för arbetet och dels hur de såg på sitt eventuella samarbete med lärarna på skolan. Arbetet har avgränsats till bibliotekariernas perspektiv på rollen och relationen. Dessa frågor besvarades med hjälp av semistrukturerade, kvalitativa intervjuer med respondenter från tre gymnasieskolbibliotek. För att skapa en teoretisk grund gås också kompetensbegreppet som sådant igenom samt tidigare studier rörande samarbetet mellan de två yrkesgrupperna.

Syftet med vårt arbete är att undersöka högläsningens och läsmiljöns betydelse i förskola och i förskoleklass. I litteraturgenomgången gör vi en historisk tillbakablick på synen på barn, böcker och högläsning. Här beskrivs även hur högläsningen kan utveckla språket, fantasin, ge inspiration till att lära sig läsa, öka intresset för skriftspråket och ge stunder med gemenskap, närhet och trygghet. Vi intervjuade lärare i förskola och förskoleklass och har tittat på när, hur och varför de arbetade med högläsning. Läsmiljön undersöktes och även om det förekom samarbete med biblioteket.

The aim of this masters thesis is to examine to what extent series books for children and youth are included in the acquisitions of public libraries. It also examines which needs series books fulfil among a group of 13-15 year old children. The main question of this thesis was: To what extent do libraries provide series books for children and youth? An inquiry investigation showed that a majority of the libraries in Sweden provide these books. The main reason to provide the books was that the demand is large.

Målet med denna undersökning har varit att ta fram lämpligt bibliotek i programspråket C för generering och parsning av JSON (JavaScript Object Notation). Biblioteket ska användas för att bygga ett nytt API mot Svenska Spels transaktionssystem som ska underlätta för klientutvecklare att anropa systemet. Undersökningen har begränsats till utvärdering två utvalda bibliotek, YAJL (Yet Another Json Library) och Jansson. För att kunna jämföra och analysera dessa har jag implementerat ett testprogram som mäter deras prestanda vid generering och parsning av ett antal utvalda JSON objekt. Jag har även undersökt biblioteken utifrån användarvänlighet och robusthet.
