Highly polluted urban storm water from e.g. highways can contain large amounts of heavy metals that may cause harm if they are discharged into recipients. To remove the heavy metals a possible low-cost method that does not require much maintenance, could be the use of reactive filters with filter materials consisting of industrial residues or other cheap mineral based materials. Dissolved metal ions are removed by reactive filters through the processes of ions binding to active sites on the surface of the filter materials, or by formation of insoluble precipitates.The ability of CaO-treated granulated blast-furnace slag, iron oxide coated sand, olivine and nepheline to remove seven heavy metals (Cr, Cd, Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb and Hg) from urban storm water was studied. Initially batch experiments were performed where the effect of pH, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved ions on the adsorption efficiency was studied.

The term maneuver warfare is frequently used in western defense doctrines and theoreticaltextbooks. The ambition of the Swedish armed forces is to attempt maneuver warfare in allappropriate situations. Theories and doctrines indicate the importance of decentralized command and control systems. Mission command (Auftragstaktik) is one such system and should be applied to all situations of the Swedish Armed Forces. There are theoretical and doctrinal bases for warfare and command, but in practice, what are the preconditions for this? Previous research addresses many theoretical questions but there are flaws in existing studies investigating practical realities.The purpose of this study has been to reach a deeper understanding of armed forces ability to maneuver warfare by analyzing conformity of command and leadership perspectives in practice.This is an interview-based qualitative case study in which respondent´s statements were analyzed and interpreted in relation to a theoretical framework.

This thesis investigates techniques for stealth hydroacoustic communication using spread spectrum. The Swedish naval defense organisations have a vision that all their units should be able to communicate with each other, even between underwater vehicles. But the properties of water makes it a complex channel to use for wireless communications. Radiomagnetic waves have very limited range in water, therefore acoustic waves are used. In this report the basics of wireless communication systems are described including source coding, channel coding, modulation techniques as well as different techniques for spread spectrum.

This study is an attempt to shed light on the importance of fiction as a bridge between different cultures and traditions. The objective of this essay is threefold. First it explores the potentiality of fiction as a communication channel between different cultures, societies and social groups. Secondly, it studies the availability of foreign fiction in Swedish language. And thirdly it tries to approach and analyze the structures and mechanisms behind that availability.

This Master thesis discusses the development of a virtual human soft tissue object for use in exercise applications of various medical procedures.The soft tissue object to be developed shall look like, feel like and behave as living human tissue. It shall give the user a realistic feeling of weight, softness and roughness, and shall behave in a correct way for exercise purposes. The soft tissue model is to be used in a three dimensional stereo graphic environment with haptic feedback. A prototype for practicing the procedure of inserting a catheter is built. The prototype is used to evaluate the potential of the virtual environment for medical exercise applications, and to assess the realism and usability of the soft tissue object.

SammanfattningDen här undersökningen handlar om hur svenska massmedier, i det här fallet dags- och kvällstidningar, framställer våldtäkt i sin nyhetsrapportering. Artiklarna är utvalda från två olika fall som blev omskrivna i svensk press. Utifrån bland annat filosofen Michel Foucaults diskursteori och med ett socialkonstruktivistiskt och genusviklat perspektiv analyseras en rad artiklar med hjälp av diskursanalys. De teoretiker som använts är bland andra Norman Fairclough.Med diskursanalysens hjälp synliggörs de underliggande betydelserna av en till synes oskyldig nyhetsrapportering. Dessa jämförs sedan med en social kontext som utgörs av en redan utförd undersökning om ungdomars förståelse av våldtäkt.

For research purposes Saab has developed a generic mathematical model denoted VEGAS of an aircraft with a configuration similar to JAS 39 Gripen. Today parts of Gripen backup control system are used also for VEGAS making the system subject to both corporate and defense secrecy. The main objective of this master thesis is to design, verify and implement public pitch axis flight control system for VEGAS. Furthermore, simplifications regarding the design process is to be examined. Design of pitch axis flight control system for the entire flight envelope has been carried out.

The complexity of the mast cell is becoming more prominent. From being the cell recognized just to contribute to allergic inflammation it is now also associated with wound healing, protection against tumor growth and in recognition and defense against a wide range of pathogens. The location of the mast cell in the barrier between the external and internal environment of the body enables the cell to quickly respond to invading bacteria, virus and parasites. Diarrhea due to Escherichia coli infection, listeriosis, toxoplasmosis, Newcastle disease and bovine respiratory syncytial virus are examples of mast cell activating diseases that can affect animals in, as well as outside, the agricultural sector. Additionally, ticks and tick-borne diseases are of concern.

Security Council resolution 1325 (2000) is about women, peace and security. Since the resolution was adopted several countries has made their own National Action Plan for implementation of the resolution.Sweden and Denmark are two of these countries. Resolution 1325 is one of the documents that each countries armed force has to relate to in international work.These countries can get to work together in international operations within the framework of the Nordic Defense Cooperation, NORDEFCO. Studiens syfte var att undersöka pedagogernas intentioner med användandet av taktil massage som pedagogisk inriktning i förskoleverksamheten, med målet att identifiera och beskriva skilda uppfattningar vad gäller effekterna av att använda taktil massage i förskoleverksamheten ur ett pedagogperspektiv.Studien har en fenomenografisk ansats, en ansats som innebär att forskaren undersöker människors uppfattningar och variationer av ett fenomen. Datainsamlingen bestod av kvalitativa intervjuer med sex pedagoger som använt eller använder sig av taktil massage i förskoleverksamheten.Resultatet av studien visar att pedagogernas intentioner med att använda taktil massage kan härröras till sociala-, fysiska, psykologiska- och kognitiva effekter. Effekter som respondenterna uppfattar med användandet av taktil massage.Slutsatsen lyder följande; att användandet av taktil massage medför att pedagogen som väljer metoden taktil massage ställs inför ett pedagogiskt dilemma vilket innebär att pedagogen måste välja mellan vad som väger tyngst, ett värdegrundsperspektiv eller ett didaktiskt perspektiv..
