The purpose of this paper is to clarify and understand the difference between Brunius?, Zettervall's and Graebe's valueing of a historical building, the cathedral of Lund. Between 1833 and 1963 the cathedral of Lund went through three larger restorations. The character of the restorations however differs a lot between the three church architects, Brunius, Zettervall and Graebe. In a time of low interest for the Middle Ages and of many demolitions of churches in the countryside, Brunius stood out as a researcher and an enthusiast of that special time.

The main purpose of this thesis has been to address the problem connected with conservation ofspecific objects in historic buildings that have a protected building status. The immaterial demandsand environmental concerns of a place of cultural significance are discussed as opposed to the welladaptedsetting of a museum, with regard to long-term preservation. In an authentic interior of acertain era, large-scale individual treatments of the objects that define it and regulations forconservation-related reasons, may not be considered a worth-while effort, as it is often the integrityof the environment as a whole that has been declared as significant. To investigate the relationshipbetween object and its context, a case study has been conducted by examination of the propertycalled ?Curmans villor?, located in the seaside community called Lysekil.

Restaurering handlar om att spara något av det existerande och använda sig av det, om det så är en struktur, ett minne, en detalj eller den inre luftmassan. Frågan är varför man i vissa fall sparar en träbit från 1700-talet som är sned och sliten, när man skulle kunna byta ut den till en rak istället, men måla den i samma kulör. Det är alltså någonting i just den slitna träbiten som förmedlar något till oss. Kanske en känsla av att vi är del av en historia och ett sammanhang. I projekt som handlar om restaurering jobbar arkitekten med just hanteringen av historia men också skapandet av framtiden.
