Vårlamm eller dikoproduktion i Dalarna : fallstudie
This study investigates a farm in Dalarna which includes 16 ha of farmland and 1, 7 ha of
pasture. The purpose is to find out if it is possible to start an animal production in
Dalarna. The study is set only to compare spring lamb production with
nurse cow production.
There are two buildings on the farm that can be used for this purpose. One is an old
cowshed, and the other is an unused silo for silage with a roof on top. Both of the
buildings are compared to every alternative in the calculations.
Nötköttsproduktion i Västerbotten
Beef production in Sweden has traditionally been about rearing of dairy Calves to slaughter. With reduced number of dairy cows and accordingly less dairy Calves for slaughter, there has been a need for new forms of beef production in Sweden. In Västerbotten there are good conditions for beef production with a high feeding level of roughage due to favourable climate. The aim of this thesis is to, through interviews with ten farmers with beef production in Västerbotten, study what and with how much they feed their animals and link the results to production level. The thesis begins with a literature review where the general feeding standards and feeding recommendations for beef cows and growing cattle are examined.

To be a farmer and have suckler cows is a difficult combination especially considering the economy. Because of the increased feed costs, the margins have become tighter. The meat price from beef cattle has increased a little when this text is written (spring, 2008), but not so much that it covers the cost for feed etc.
I have a small suckler cow production on approximately 30 cows and 2 bulls plus followers as a part-time business. The herd is tied in the old dairy stable built in the late seventies.
Aspects on cow traffic and management on farms with automatic milking
This thesis consists of four case studies. The objective is to find out how to get a well functioning cow traffic in an automatic milking system. Different technical and building solutions are analysed and some adjustments are proposed for the DeLaval herd management software.

After I heard that two deadly accidents in farming 2003 were created by work with
cattle, I got the idea of writing this degree project. So far there are not too many reports
written about safety for the worker nor the animal. Therefore it will fit in with a report
about safe handling of free stalled cattle.
The Swedish Board of Agriculture would also like to do an information material about
outside stalled cattle with this degree project as a background.
The collecting of material was made by visiting farmers. The goal was to visit 15 ? 20
herds and when this is being written 19 herds have been visited.

In this final thesis a study about welfare indicators in the Swedish milk production has been carried out. The system Swedish Animal Welfare Monitoring Scheme developed by the Swedish Dairy Association has been used as a base and the EU project WELFARE QUALITY® has also been used as a source of information. Focus groups have been used as a qualitative investigating method. This included four focus groups, two with farm auditors from the two different dairies and two with dairy farmers. This method was chosen because in this way one can study how a conversation about a given subject takes form in a respectable way.
Fallstudie av 10 skånska gårdar för en lönsam stutproduktion :
During the summer of 2005 a number of steer producers in Skåne, Sweden, found that their animals graded less favourable according to the EUROP carcass grading system when slaughtered, than ordinary. The aim with this project was to determine factors that affects the production result in steer production and to find the reason to the lower classification. The project was initiated by Anita Persson, LRF, Skåne and was preformed with supervision from Ingemar Olsson, SLU, and Jens Fjelkner, Skånesemin. Ten producers of dairy steers located in Skåne was chosen for this study. The producers were interviewed to collect information about their steer production with respect to their planning and results.
Utvärdering av olika diagnostiska metoder för infektioner med bovint coronavirus hos nötkreatur :
This paper shortly describes the coronavirus family, bovine corona viruses (BCV)
properties and two diseases that BCV causes, winter dysentery and calf diarrhoea.
The purpose of the study was to compare different diagnostic methods to detect
BCV. Different methods are discussed, PCR, ELISA, immunofluorescense and
virus isolation.
Investigations were made in three different herds with winter dysentery; one dairy
cattle farm with about 100 cows of different ages, one testing station for bulls with
about 150 bulls and another small dairy cattle farm with 26 cows and 20
replacement heifers and Calves. Faeces and nasal swabs were analysed with PCR
and ELISA.
The result shows that PCR seems to be a reliable method for detecting BCV but
that the ELISA test can not be used as a reliable diagnostic method to analyse
samples from animals with winter dysentery..

To turn the dairy heifers out on pasture is the most natural way for the cattle to get feed.
At the same time it is cheap and if it is right treated a feed of high nutritive value. The
problem today is to get dairy heifers to grow enough when they are grazing at natural
pasture for the entire summer. Therefore, the opinions differ whether pasture is a
resource or a problem.
The increasing interest of pasture production is due to the fact that you can receive
grants for preserving valuable natural assets and cultural landscape elements in the
pasture land.
A high grazing pressure is necessary to preserve an open landscape and a great variety
of species. In the same time the heifers have to supply their nutritive needs in order to
grow and be large enough to show heat and be pregnant in right time to calve with a
sufficient body size and at an economically right age.
This paper includes a literature review on natural pasture, pasture production, and
growth of dairy heifers together with own interviews with dairy farmers about their
point of view to the pasture husbandry on the farms, how they plan for pasture, look
after natural pasture, treatment areas and take care of the Calves and heifers. The results
indicate that the time it takes and the demanded work are the biggest factors to how and
why the farmers do as they do..
Babesios : en fallbeskrivning samt diskussion av fästingburna sjukdomar hos nöt i Sverige
Many farms in the counties in the south of Sweden have difficulties with diseases spread by ticks; mainly babesiosis and tick-borne fever (TBF) but there are indications that borreliosis ought to be included. All of the tick-borne diseases radically decrease farm profit if the herd is affected. The production of the vaccine used against babesiosis since the 1920´s, will be discontinued in the near future and in addition to economical reasons it is therefore important to learn more about the diseases above.
During the summer and fall of 2002 and 2003, a farm in the island of Gotland was burdened with unusually many cases of bovine babesiosis. In total 43 animals fell ill and one died.

Most of the beef production in Sweden has been integrated with milk production. Since the 1990:s, the number of dairy cows has decreased. A specialised beef production has developed in purpose to compensate for this decrease. The consumption of beef have increased in the last decade, but the Swedish production has no followed this trend. In 2004, the percentage of beef self-sufficiency in Sweden was 60 %.
Animal welfare in Ethiopia: handling of cattle during transport and operations at Kera Abattoir, Addis Abeba
The main objective of this study was to evaluate animal welfare situation in Ethiopia during slaughter and to investigate chain activities between animal markets and Kera abattoir in Addis Abeba. In total, 442 animals were observed within 52 groups of cattle; both ox and
Calves with different breeds. The study was divided into four different sets of data collection; behavioural observations, recording of slaughter process, observation during transport and interview. During the behavioural observations, an ethogram was used with 46 behaviours
observed, categorised into 5 different groups. The data was calculated using Excel and SAS.

Complex Vertebral Malformation (CVM) is an autosomal recessive inherited defect in the Holstein breed. The defect has lead to structurally malformed Calves and losses of pregnancies. To determine the effect of CVM on fertility in the Swedish Holstein Breed 375 Holstein bulls used in breeding by Svensk Avel and Skånesemin were assigned to this study. 228 bulls matched the criteria of birth year, 1995-1999, > 75 inseminations and a known CVM-status. Of the total 228 bulls 53 of them were CVM-carriers and 175 were non-carriers.
The SAS-programme was used to determine the effects of CVM-status, the bull?s father and birth year on Non-return rates (NRR) for 28, 56 and 168 days.

This paper aims to, through a literature review, examine how to best design and adapt calf huts to meet the calf's physiological requirements and reduce the infection pressure for enteric and respiratory diseases. It illuminates how the calf relates to different temperatures and climate, which temperature control mechanisms it uses and its ability to perform these regulations, as well as providing a summary of the past decades´ research on the calf huts housing system. These two theory chapters, along with a concluding discussion, provide a better understanding of how to, especially in temperate climates, design the most suitable calf hut, which cater to the calf's both thermal comfort and physical health. The literature suggests that the calf's own temperature control works well to counteract the temperature outside the desired range, and that one of the most important factors rather is ventilation of a calf hut, which reduces moisture and pathogens. The conclusion of this paper is mainly that there is not an obvious way to place and construct a calf hutch and that most design principles contribute to both positive and negative effects simultaneously.
Factors affecting the heifer´s age at pregnancy
Several factors affect the heifer´s growth and development, the newborn calf´s feeding of co-lostrum during its first hours of life is one important factor. The colostrum contains higher amount of immunoglobulins and insulin growth factors compared to matured milk. A high intake of immunoglobulins from colostrum results in a high blood concentration of immuno-globulins until the age of eight months. This leads to a lower incidence of diseases that can affect the growth and development negatively. Diarrhea is the most common disease in Calves younger than 30 days.
