Comparison of two methods for evolving recurrent artificial neural networks for
n this dissertation a comparison of two evolutionary methods for evolving ANNs for robot control is made. The methods compared are SANE with enforced sub-population and delta-coding, and marker-based encoding. In an attempt to speed up evolution, marker-based encoding is extended with delta-coding. The task selected for comparison is the hunter-prey task. This task requires the robot controller to posess some form of memory as the prey can move out of sensor range.

EVA, Equine Viral Arteritis, was diagnosed for the first time in 1953 in USA. The disease gained international interest in 1984, when there were several outbreaks of abortion at Thoroughbred studs in USA. EAV, Equine Arteritis Virus, is an RNA virus in the Arteriviridae family. There is only one serotype of EAV but several strains and the strains have different virulence. EAV is transmitted in two different ways: by aerosols, or by venereal transmission.
Samrådsunderlag för Lysekilsprojektet : Forskning och utveckling av vågkraft
The aim of this research is to find out what environmental impact a wave power park has on the Swedish west coast by creating a consultation paper (?Samrådsunderlag?) for the Lysekilproject at Uppsala University. To highlight the complexity of the problem a system analytic approach was used and illustrated by a Causal Loop Diagram.The overall assessment of the Lysekilprojects wave power park at the Swedish west coast is that it will have a low impact on the environment. This is due to the relative small size of the wave power park and some technical solutions made with the environmental aspect in mind. Artificial reefs and a sanctuary for marine species are effects created by the wave power park and in the longer term the impact will give access to an untapped source of renewable energy, wave energy.
Seminalplasma : komponenter och dess betydelse för spermiens överlevnad
Sperma består av spermier och seminalplasma, vars förhållande liksom spermans innehåll varierar mellan ejakulatets fraktioner, individer och djurslag. Seminalplasma bildas i hanens testiklar, bitestiklar och accessoriska könskörtlar och påverkar spermierna samt miljön i hanens och honans reproduktionsorgan. Bland annat påverkas immunförsvaret i honans könsorgan av seminalplasma, spermier och spädningsmedium. Vid naturlig betäckning gynnas spermierna av seminalplasmans närvaro men under lagring har denna, för vissa arter, även en negativ inverkan. Spermans koncentrationer av olika ämnen skiljer sig mellan ejakulatets fraktioner, där den totala proteinkoncentrationen är lägst i första delen, innan spermier finns, och högst i den efterföljande fraktionen, som även är den mest spermierika.

The horse has been domesticated for several thousand years. It has gone from being used primarily for food and transportation, to become one of the most popular pets in Sweden. With over 150,000 practitioners, horseback riding is one of the biggest sports in Sweden and there is a variety of specializations to choose from. One orientation is western riding which is a broad sport with several disciplines where most originate in cattle work and other ranch tasks. Western riding is a growing sport in Sweden with an increasing number of practitioners and with many different organizations and associations, it is important that the correct knowledge of the equipment used is disseminated.
Artificial aids are available in a variety of designs and the most common variants used by western riders in Sweden is draw reins or some forms of martingale.
Prosamodernism, form och genusdebatt : En komparativ form- och receptionsstudie av Karin Boyes Astarte och Rosa Chacels Estación, ida y vuelta
The aim of this study is to compare the modernist novels Astarte (1931) by the Swedish writer Karin Boye with Estación, Ida y vuelta (1930) by the Spanish author Rosa Chacel and the reception of these literary works in contemporary academic research. The theoretical ground of the study consists of feminist and critical theory, with traits of discourse analysis.Astarte and Estación were in large part forgotten and ignored by the Western Canon of literature during most of the 20th century, but have lately gained more attention as important modernist novels by researchers (from the feminist, poststructuralist or hermeneutic theoretical fields) who primarily examine the experimental forms figured by the texts in relation to the deconstruction and shattering of human homogenous ?essence?.The results found in the study show that the literary forms of both novels can be associated with a kind of illusion rapture, which relate to the modernist inclination to what Frederic Jameson calls artificial narrative; a form technique that points back at itself to emphasize its own characteristic of being a constructed and subjective illustration of reality. The contemporary interest in these artificial literary forms expressed by Astarte and Estación is therefore probably a consequence of the vibrant academic debates carried out during later decades concerning the conception of human gender and identity as construction and performance. .

Detection of leukocytes in semen from boars is part of the routine control of semen quality. Leukocytes in semen can cause damage to spermatozoa that leads to impaired fertilization. In the Artificial insemination (AI) industry there are standard routines for the quality control of the boars and of the neat semen before use. Since 2001, Quality Genetics has not done the leukocyte examination on semen samples from boars which are used for the production of pigs for slaughter.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the occurrence of leukocytes in semen from AI-boars. The questions addressed were whether there are boars that have leukocytes in their semen and how frequently it occurs and, moreover, if there are differences between breeds, or even between individuals whose semen was checked before use in AI-dose production compared to those which were not.
The study included a total of 135 AI-boars, of which 67 were Hampshire, 35 Yorkshire and 33 Landrace, all belonging to Quality Genetics AI-station in Hållsta.
Interdependence between seed age and aerated steam treatment intensities
Aerated steam treatment is a modern and environmental friendly method for seed borne fungus sanitation, mainly used on cereals. The method involves exposure to heat and high humidity, factors which are known to induce a fast ageing of seeds, thus resulting in reduced storability. This thesis clarifies the interdependence between seed age and the aerated steam treatment intensities.
Two studies were carried out in this thesis. In the first study the storage longevity of seeds treated with aerated steam was examined. The second study investigated the shelf-life of the pre-tests used to determine the aerated steam treatment tolerance of a seed lot, by testing the treatment tolerance of seeds aged prior to the treatment.
Så blev vi en familj : Barns berättelser om hur ett barn blir till, ett radioreportage
Antalet barn som växer upp i en familj som avviker från kärnfamiljen ökar.Syftet med det här arbetet är att belysa just barnens perspektiv och sprida kunskap om hur barn, i andra familjekonstellationer än kärnfamiljen, själva berättar om hur de blir till och vad en familj är.Även forskningen och medierapporteringen om dessa familjer ökar, men endast en liten del av den rapportering som finns utgår från barnens perspektiv. Barns röster hörs också generellt sällan i media.Detta arbete består dels av ett radioreportage, med namnet ?Så blev vi en familj?, där barn i olika familjekonstellationer berättar om tillblivelse, dels av en reflektionsrapport.Barnen i reportaget är vana vid att berätta om sin tillblivelse och de förklarar hur en insemination går till, de använder begrepp som spermier, frö, donator, klinik och donatorpappa. Fakta som framkommer i det journalistiska arbetet styrks av den forskning som gjorts i ämnet. Forskningen visar att barn i andra familjer än kärnfamiljen tidigt lär sig att berätta om sin familj, sitt ursprung och hur de själva blev till.I reflektionsrapporten beskrivs den grundresearch - av tidigare forskning - som är gjord inför arbetet med reportaget.
Analys av dräktighets- och fölningsresultat inom svensk varmblodig ridhäst och svensk varmblodig travhäst åren 2000-2006
The purpose of this thesis was to analyze conception and foaling results of Swedish warmblood and Standardbred trotters using breeding statistics during the years 2000-2006. Key issues in this thesis were: Have the conception and foaling results of stallions changed during the period 2000-2006? What is the effect of the use of various breeding methods? Is testicle size correlated with conception and foaling results? How important are age, breed and level of inbreeding of the stallion for conception and foaling results?
Breeding statistics were available for 537 Swedish Warmblood stallions and 305 Standardbred trotter stallions. To be included in the analyses, a stallion must have mated at least ten mares in total over the period 2000-2006. This criterion was met by 313 Swedish Warmblood stallions and 272 Standardbred trotter stallions.

Livslängden hos kyllagrade spermier vid artificiell insemination hos häst - kan den förlängas?
Över 90 % av betäckningarna inom Avelsföreningen för svenska varmblodiga hästen (ASVH) skedde med artificiell insemination (AI) år 2011. AI har många fördelar i avelsarbetet då hingsten inte behöver vara på plats när stoet brunstar, möjligheten att välja bland både nationella och internationella hingstar ger en stor valmöjlighet för stoägaren. I Sverige samlas sperma från hingstarna normalt sett tre gånger i veckan genom upphopp på en fantomhäst där ejakulatet samlas i en artificiell vagina. Trots mycket forskning är det fortfarande ca 20 % av hingstarna som lämnar spermier som inte lämpar sig för frysning.
Innan nedkylning centrifugeras seminalplasman bort eller späds ut för att reducera inverkan på spermierna. Seminalplasman har positiv inverkan på spermierna vid naturlig betäckning men kan ha negativ inverkan på spermierna under lagring.

To find heats and inseminate the cow at the right time is crucial to receive high conception rate. Delaval has, in corporation with FOSS, developed Herd Navigator which is a management program that measure four biological parameters in the milk; progesterone, betahydroxybutyrate, lactate dehydrogenase and urea.
