ABSTRACTSofie Haag: Yrke: Operaproducent. En studie av operaproducentens roll och betydelse Sverige 2008. Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för musikvetenskap, 2009.The aim of this essay is to provide a better understanding of the role of the Swedish opera producer (often called "production manager") and the opera organisation in which he/she works. Very little has been written about this role, in Sweden as well as internationally. To fill this apparent gap, this study presents the results of inteviews with representatives of ten of Swedens´opera organisations, as well as three case studies. The results illustrate how the role and its responsibilities vary between different organisations depending on their size, organisational and financial structure and artistic aims. The interviews further reveal that the role of the producer also depends on the person itself, and his/hers competence, experience and personal interests. There is at present not one official definition that covers the role of the producer. Instead, the role is shaped by the individual and the organisation he/she is active in. The study also discusses the benefits that a producer may bring into a production or an organisation, including e.g cost effectiveness, synergistic effects and improved overall coordination, as well as the potential constraints.
