"Visst gör det ont" Patienters upplevelse av postoperativ smärtbehanling
Introduction: A big part of the patients that recently has gone through operation at surgical units experiences pain in different scales after their operation. Untreated postoperative pain has been proved in different studies to increase to risk medical complications, longer rehabilitation, more days at the hospital and higher expenses for the hospital. One of the nurses? main tasks is to notice and relieve the pain of the patients. To engage the patients more in the medical process and make the nurses´ work more person-centered could make an impact on the postoperative pain and contribute to a better pain relief. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to describe how patients from different surgical units experiences postoperative pain. Method: Semi- structured interviews will be conducted with approximately 20 patients that have been treated for surgical operation where you are expecting postoperative pain. A pilot study was held with six patients from two different surgical units at the university hospital of Sahlgrenska in Gothenburg, Sweden to test the durability of the study. The material was analyzed through qualitative content analysis from Graneheim och Lundman (2008) and the results gave a number of categories and subcategories. Results: The results of the pilot study shows that several factors impact on the postoperative experience of pain. It resulted in three main categories, the individual experience of pain, partnership and participation where comfort and information became two subcategories. Conclusion: Many factors impact the experience of pain. The patients got more satisfied with the pain relief when they got to participate and were noticed. Many experienced that the pain increased in the home after they were signed out from the hospital. Propositions for arrangements are to keep working more person-centered with the patient in focus and to increase the comfort and to follow up with the patients better.
