Atlas Copco Tools develops and manufactures handheld industrial tools. Heat and surface treatments are used to provide the tools with certain properties. There are no routines for the choice of treatment or for how to specify treatment on drawings. Production documents that are sent for production abroad may not be clear enough. Some treatments are known as trademarks and there are no instructions for how to specify these on drawings and in CAD-models.The purpose of this master thesis work is to create recommendations for the procedure of choosing heat and surface treatment. The aim is also to investigate and propose how to specify treatments so as to facilitate a better understanding of Atlas Copco drawings.A pre-study illustrated how heat and surface treatment is specified on drawings. The pre-study included several interviews which laid ground for requirements and desires concerning the procedure of choosing treatment.Atlas Copco has satisfactory information and routines for the specification of heat treatment. The demand for guidance and information on surface treatment is greatest for black oxidation, anodizing and Blacknite. A web based design tool is to contain a surface treatment guide. By specifying the requirements of the surface the mechanical engineer is led to appropriate treatment and drawing specification. Surface treatment is to be stated on the third line of the head of the drawing as a text string containing treatment, requirements and a reference to standard. Standard documents are to be divided into two parts, the directive for surface treatment and the treatment standards.
