Ocean Modules Sweden AB is a small business active in the field of underwater technology. Thecompany was contacted by the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) in order todevelop a new system that would conform to their specific requirements. Two students at theRoyal Institute of Technology (KTH) were consulted in conjunction of this project in order to aidthe development and conceptual design of the system.The primary users of the system are the divers of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal division (EOD)- a branch of the Swedish Armed Forces. The purpose of the product was to incorporate allnecessary functions required by the EOD divers into one single system. The main functions arecommunication between the surface operator and diver, video recording, still imaging, positioning,navigation and ocean floor mapping with sonar. The system consisted of two main Units ? theSurface Unit and the Diver Unit; the student consultants have developed the latter.The students had to consider a number of design aspects as adequate functions, constructionmaterial, ergonomics, modularity and maintenance. The project had a systematic approach wherethe specification of requirements formed the foundation for the product development. Thespecification consisted of requirements from FMV but also requirements formed by the studentsduring the project.The joint project concluded with four visualized concepts and a report describing the procedure aswell as the project outcome. The report included design descriptions and considerations. Atheoretical frame of reference was formed to function as a foundation for the design referencesthroughout the project. Of the four initial concepts, the final concept was an assimilation of thesereference points resulting in a more thorough and complete design.The final concept had a future potential of fulfilling the requirement specification according to thestudents. The students considered the final concept to be a proper platform for furtherdevelopment of the Diver Unit.
