Torkningstekniker i den preoperativa handdesinfektionen - en experimentell studie

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Preoperative hand disinfection aims to prevent surgical site infections. After the preparing hand wash, drying is performed using an aseptic technique. It?s important to dry hands thoroughly in order to achieve the full effect of the alcohol based hand disinfection. Due to the lack of a evidence-based guideline on this procedure, the hand drying techniques differ among operating theatre nurses, depending on which technique seen as the most appropriate. Aim: To compare two completely different ways of hand drying in the preoperative hand disinfection. Is there any difference in the number of CFU (colony forming unit) between the two drying techniques after disinfection with Sterillium? Method: The study is quantitative experimental with a Cross-over design. Participants will be randomized into one of two groups and they will use completely different techniques for hand drying. Samples from fingertips will be taken three times on each participant, before hand wash, after hand drying and after usage of Sterillium. The quantity of CFU will be compared between the two groups. Results: The pilot study showed no substantial difference in the number of CFU (colony forming unit) between the two groups. Discussion: During the analysis of data, shortcomings were detected related to the method of carrying out the culture of samples. This makes the results unreliable. It?s of greater clinical relevance to quantify CFU from the whole hand and not just from the fingertips. Therefore in the full-scale study another culture sample method will be applied. Keywords: Drying techniques, paper, preoperative hand disinfection, evidence-based nursing, operating theatre nurse.
