Till vilket pris? En kvalitativ studie om missbrukets påverkan på de sociala relationerna.

The aim of the study was to examine how substance abuse influences social relationships to families, friends and others. Five ex addicts in a treatment centre were interviewed. We used thematic interviews with themes that we regarded as relevant for our study. In the analysis we applied the theoretical concept of symbolic interactionism. Theories of emotions also helped us to explain feelings that arise in the social relationships. The result of the study showed that the respondent's social relationships to relatives were characterized by lies and betrayals related to substance misuse. In their relations to their children, the interviewees experienced shame and guilt over having let them down, by their both psychologically and physically absence. In the drug world, the relationships were built on a community spirit that consisted of joint actions and of relational dependency, characterized by drugs, money and the absence of near friends. When respondents came deeper into the drug world, they dropped almost all contact with friends that did not use drugs. During their stay in the treatment centre the respondents got support from the other clients, some also got support from relatives. The respondents considered these relationships important to maintain a drug free life and likewise they not could have any contact with people that used drugs. Another result of the study was that the respondents have few social relationships. Relations to other clients who share the same experiences of substance misuse are important for reflections on social relations in a treatment setting.
