BillerudKorsnäs is a leading global provider of primary fiber-based packaging materials and on Gruvöns Bruk in Grums, they have chosen to invest millions in the boiler at the facility to increase the total capacity of the factory. This results in the Pulp Flash Dryer at Gruvön being burden more, which makes it important that it is of great reliability and can be run with a high capacity. The reliability of the Pulp Flash Dryer at Gruvön is not as good as one could hope, which leads to reduced availability and production, as well as to increased maintenance costs. There are a number of different reasons for this, but all the casual links are not known.The purpose of this project was to perform a system analysis of the Pulp Flash Dryer to identify bottlenecks and the most critical parts from a capacity- and availability perspective. Appropriate methodology for the system analysis was used and would be used in a structured way to perform the analysis with data from the process and the maintenance system. The aim was to increase knowledge about the Pulp Flash Dryers different steps of process and to find possible solutions for increase of production level and availability, as well as generating detailed grounds for the solutions which would be considered the most interesting.Because a structured methodology was studied and applied for the System Analysis, bottlenecks were successfully identified in the system. The most critical one was considered to be the wrapping machine. A deeper analysis of it was performed to find possible areas of improvement. A number of suggestions for improvement were suggested to contribute to a decreased amount of alarms and production failures; in which a more detailed suggestion for solutions were brought up for the wrapping machine and should be able to increase its availability. A suggestion was also made regarding how a rebuilding of the line could contribute to an increase in capacity. For future enquiries, it is important to continue the analysis of the system, in order to successive decrease the occurring alarms and unplanned stops in the line.
