Purpose: The purpose of this study is to illustrate and problemize the consequences of the traditional male domination in film creation for a female director by critically examining the construction of the film director. Methodology: The study is based on a qualitative case study which was conducted as a participant observation. Theoretical perspectives: The study is based on social constructionist theories, discourse analysis and gender theory. They constitute the theoretical frame of reference on which the analysis is based. Empirical foundation: The empirical foundation of the study is based upon primary data from workers in the field of film creation. Conclusions: Two aspects of the construction of the director are found in the empirical material and analyzed. The first expressed archetype or construction is called the male magician. The director should according to the expressed norm be male, and have certain innate magical qualities. The director in this case study experiences and expresses a discrepancy between her own persona and the idea of the male magician. This results in an experience of inadequacy; it is a disabling or hindering discourse in this case. The second set of expressed opinions is called the pampered genius. This refers to ideas which stipulate that the film director should be a dominant and hierarchical type of leader. The film workers approach the director, in most instances, with a great and apparent amount of respect. The director?s word is in most cases law. The director should not be interrupted or disturbed at any cause. The director in this case study appears to be helped in her work by this aspect of the discourse as it apparently facilitates her ability to lead, the manifestation of the construction has an enabling dimension.
