Schizophrenia can cause symptoms such as auditory hallucinations, delusions, emotional blunting, apathy and lack of motivation. These result in a diminished ability to participate in daily activities and bring the client group into the domain of occupational therapists. The purpose of this literature review is to compile the latest findings in occupational therapy interventions for individuals with schizophrenia. Furthermore guidance regarding the utility of the interventions will be given based on the author?s assessment of the evidence in the 22 articles included. The articles were sorted into eight categories. The main results show that the Patient education category reduces relapse frequency, and the Rehabilitation to receive work category is most effective through supported work. The Cognitive functioning category shows a good effect on memory and thought processes. The categories Social skills, Rehabilitation through work, Group therapy and Skills training in ADL show only tendencies towards the effect of the interventions. No guidelines could be given in the Art therapy category. The aims of this literature review were fulfilled. However, guidance in the utility of the interventions is restricted because of the often low levels of evidence. Further research is required into the effects of interventions for people with schizophrenia.
