The management at the City of Stockholm?s Sports Department have problems. During recent years several IT-projects have been launched but results are worse than could have been hoped for. The projects are generally perceived as being too expensive, too time consuming and not to have delivered the expected results. This thesis aims at giving the City of Stockholm?s Sports Department theoretically based advice on how to improve their management of IT-projects. Applying modern organisation theory and research to project management, mainly from a social constructionist perspective, the author studies and analyzes two recently completed IT-projects. The thesis ends up with a set of practically applicable advice on how the City of Stockholm?s Sports Department can work with project management in the future. The final discussion is grouped into four different areas: structuring of projects, understanding project uniqueness, building flexibility into project realization and to focus project evaluations on learning. By discussing how research on project management can come into practical use, this thesis also fulfils a second purpose ? to give an example of applied science to the topic, outlining a new methodology for project management.
