This master thesis was performed at Scania Research & Development. The given mission was to see where the department Systems Development should focus to improve their development work. Thus the purpose was to map the product development processes in which the department works today and within them identify improvements. To fulfil the purpose a theoretical study of relevant terms, such as improvement work, product development and processes, initially was formed. The mapping method used is called "walk trough" and meant to let the people working in the processes be guides in their own process. To do this a range of managers in the department was interviewed. This along with a workshop where other members was invited sets the empiric base to this work. The result was summed up in five different processes. This is the start of an improvement work and the processes needs to be updated continuously. From the interviews many improvements and problem also appeared. These were categorized into twelve different improvement areas. Some of the conclusions from the thesis are given here:? It is requested that the department needs to be united to evolve the knowledge of each others work and avoid problems like being forgotten in a project.? It is not made clear in the department whom is responsible for the priority of ongoing projects.? It is perceived that planning is done reactively. A planning method is needed on group level.? The number of new and inexperienced employees has increased in the last few years and this means lesser knowledge of the company, the processes and the product.? For some functions, within and outside the department, the responsibility, authorization and obligations are unclear.? Many of the supporting programs and methods used by the department are insufficient.These conclusions were summed up in a number of recommendations to the Process Support group who have, among other things, the overall responsibility for improvement work. These recommendations are based on our opinion and is what we think is possible for the department to implement. There are of course other areas that could be improved but these are general and could affect other departments and maybe the whole company.
