Lågprisflygets påverkan på regioner

en studie av Stockholm

The purpose of the study is to investigate and elucidate how low-cost airlines can influence and develop tourism in a region. In order to bring about the purpose the author used two research questions. Have low-cost airlines contributed to regional development? How many additional visitors have low-cost airlines contributed to Stockholm? In order to answer these questions a survey was carried out at Arlanda airport and statistics were collected. The results of the study show that there has been a regional development. Commercial overnight stays had increased by 5.7 percent between years 2002-2007. The consequence of this was that the number of hotels and capacity increased by 7 percent across the region. Such considerations have led to a growth of 90 billion Swedish crowns in Stockholm. Employment in 2008 represented approximately 18 200 employees throughout the region, 12 400 of them were in Stockholm city. In addition, taxes have risen to 2.9 billion in 2008 for the entire region. As well the number of visits had increased to Stockholm. Air traffic had increased in 2008 by 3.5 percent to 22.6 million passengers. What also emerges in the study is that six out of ten passengers are coming from Europe and that there is a gradual steady growth in passengers for international flights. It is mostly from countries such as Italy and Austria that low-fare passengers are coming from. Both low-cost airlines Ryanair and Norwegian have experienced an increase in passengers from various destinations across Spain to Stockholm. For example, Ryanair had an increase in the year 2009 with 170 000 seats to Stockholm.
