The number of smartphones are constantly increasing, 2010 approximately 200 million unitswere sold globally and the figure is predicted to increase to 1 billion in 2016. The increased useof smartphones also carries many risks, for example many smartphones are connected to theInternet. This is a possible way for hackers to gain access to user devices. Smartphones are wellrepresented in research on its safety, while research on its use and users? awareness often leavesmore to be desired. That is why the focus of this study is about user awareness. Based on this, wechose the following research question for our investigation: Do the users risk awareness affecttheir use of smartphones from a security perspective?To answer this question, we chose to implement a netnographic study of two recent cases inwhich the users of smartphones are exposed to various risks through their use. Our section onearlier research reported a number of different authors investigations and conclusions regardingusers risk awareness. The main theory we assumed concluded that there was a link that showedthat people with intimate knowledge of threats against smartphones could in fact have a kind offalse security, which means that they felt safer than they were in practice. In the analysis weconclude, based on earlier research and through our own study, that users? risk awareness affecttheir use of smartphones. Further, to describe how risk awareness affects the use of smartphonesearlier research inspired us to develop various user profiles that added a new dimension byincluding users? attitudes. Based on how the users in our study discussed and commented on thecases we created the following profiles: "The selfproclaimedexpert", "The bully", "Theenlightened one" and "The involuntary victim".
