MYDATA automation AB is one of the leading companies in development of surface-mountingtechnology and stencil free solder paste applications. MYDATA?s MY500 is a jet printerdesigned for solder paste application on printed circuit boards. The jet printer contains a cassettewhich consists of a holder and a cartridge. There is also a calibration unit which monitors andcalibrates the application of solder paste. In a prior development project two concepts for eachunit has been devised. Some aspects of industrial design have been taken into consideration butnot all.The purpose of this master?s thesis was to improve ergonomics, function, usability and costeffectivenesson both the cassette and the calibration unit in the MY500. Another important goalwas to design the parts more esthetically pleasing. It was also desirable to minimize the weightof the cassette.The thesis started with a pre-study where the concepts were analyzed. An information gatheringwhich consisted of a literature study, user surveys and interviews with various employees ofMYDATA was conducted. A specification requirement was formulated based on the datacollected from the information gathering. A frame of reference was developed for the thesis; itcontains information from earlier projects, investigations and other useful information. Theconcepts were analyzed and the problems was identified and considered in the conceptgeneration phase. The concepts were actualized in the design phase, the most important tools inthe design phase being CAD and FEM software. Various materials were taken into considerationduring the design. Detail drawings for the calibration units were produced. Finally a costanalysiswas performed.Four prototypes were constructed. From these four, two have been deemed the most relevant tocontinue working with. The cassette prototype is similar to the current solution but has betterergonomics, weighs less and is independent of the orientation of the tubes flanges, which was arequirement from customers. The calibration unit has a sheet metal frame and casing. This is acost-effective solution which is considered to be substantially cheaper than today?s calibrationunit.
