Koldioxidutsläpp vid vägbyggnad - en fallstudie med jämförelse av alternativa byggnadssätt


Abstract This degree project examines how much carbon dioxide that emits during the construction phase of a road project. This is to make it possible to compare how the amount of carbon dioxide differentiates between traditional road construction and Swepave construction, which is PEAB?s alternative way to design roads. To make the comparison a calculation tool has been produced. To compare the amount of carbon dioxide emissions a reference project was needed. This reference project was designed both with Swepave and the traditional way. It?s only the construction phase that has been examined, therefore the parts included in the calculation are transports, machine hours, production of different materials and the energy consumption of the project. The production of the calculation tool demanded a number of inputs, such as carbon dioxide emission factors and information from the reference project like tons of material, machine hours, distance from the suppliers. The carbon dioxide emission factor for the parts in the calculation did in some cases already partly exist and in some not. For the parts where the emission factor did not already exist the factor had to be calculated from background data from the suppliers of the road project. When constructing according to the Swepave method used in this project, the existing soil material is first stabilized to make a good subgrade. Then an unbound layer is added which also is stabilized. The last step is to add a thin top layer of asphalt. In the traditional way to build the existing soil is first excavated and then replaced with better rock material to make a good subgrade. In the next step several layers of bound and unbound rock material are added. The Swepave construction was in the case I have examined thinner than the traditional construction, 545 mm compared to 750 mm. The thinner construction resulted in less quantity of material, fewer transports, fewer machine hours etc. The produced calculation tool showed that Swepave?s thinner construction emitted 2,4 % less carbon dioxide than a traditional construction. To examine how the quantity of carbon dioxide differentiates in a life cycle perspective between building the traditional way and building with Swepave can be a future research project.
