Hyllningsmusik till Karl XI

En studie kring 18 tillfälleskompositioner

This paper is a study of 18 extant pieces of panegyrical music for the Swedish king Karl XI (1655?1697). The compositions are preserved in two forms. There are a few contemporary prints, but the largest amount of music is preserved as manuscripts in the Dübencollection (Uppsala University Library). The paper focuses on four different aspects of the production of these 18 compositions. First, there are four examples of applications of new texts to already existing pieces of music. Secondly, there are six examples of music composed by Kapellmeister Gustav Düben or by colleagues in direct contact with the Swedish court. Thirdly, two anonymous pieces are investigated and the composers are suggested to be Gustav Düben and Dietrich Buxtehude respectively. Last, two pieces of music for the Swedish king produced by composers abroad are discussed. The aim is to contribute to the knowledge of the late 1700th century Swedish court music. These 18 pieces of panegyrical music have thus been put in a broader cultural context describing those specific events and conditions under which the music was produced.
